hindus had four varnas in their population . initially varna was an option or decision. but later it was strictly based on birth and married only internally. brahmins 1 studied sciences. vysyas 2 did business. shudras 3 carried out their family profession like agriculture or ironsmith or goldsmith or crockery etc. kshatriya 4 varna were kings,commanders,foot soldiers . kshatriya varna were protectors. so when a king invaded an other kingdom,they assembled in a huge ground and their armies fought . so only kshayriyas on both sides fought and died.no other varna was involved. looting or pillaging was unheard of. kshatriyas ,inspite of such absolute power, for tens of thousands of years were very humble,gentle manly,with high moral values. but, kshatriya population declined slowly over thousands of years. soldier number could not be increased . other varnas hardly had any nationalistic feelings as their life was hardly affected who won,ruled . when islamics came in 800 AD,our army strength was not enough. its not until 1000 to 1400 AD that non kshatriyas were recruited into army.
