How and When to Clean Bird Feeders

For the health and safety of the birds, it is very important to keep you bird feeders clean.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. i *deep clean* once a month. empty them out, scrub with soap and water, rinse rinse rinse, then soaking in vinegar to kill mold 1-2 hours, rinse rinse rinse, then soak in 1:10 bleach solution for 10 mins, rinse rinse rinse, then dry fully near a fan. it is a project that takes me 1-2 days by myself, but feels good to put out everything again sparkling clean. and of course, rinsing off extra seed and visible waste just with the hose on blast every time i refill, especially feeders that are prone to moisture retention.

@@MegInWhispers wow that’s a lot but awesome. I wished I would have saw this before I done my feeders. Do you know if vinegar will hurt birds cause I didn’t rinse the vinegar off I just air hosed it off. ☹️

Hello, what do you soak the feeders in before taking them apart before cleaning with dawn? And after they dry a bit and you spray on the 50/50 vinegar and water do you let the solution dry in the sun or shade? Thanks

Well, my last hummingbird took off yesterday 😢 I’m leaving my feeders out a couple weeks in case any want to stop by on their trip south to fuel up 😊I was actually beginning to wonder if the little guy was just going to stay 😂
