WHO AM I?
I am a Harvard Graduate School of Education alumni '16 and a current PhD student in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego. I produce videos about the graduate school application and my journey through a PhD program. Subscribe to follow my journey through the PhD experience and to gain insight on how to best prepare for the graduate school application process.
I created this channel because I did not have access to many resources when I was applying for graduate programs. Now that I have been through two graduate school application processes, I want to share my knowledge and the helpful information I have gained through those experiences.
Additionally, for the past four years, I have been working as a Retention Specialist and Director for a federally-funded program at a higher education institution. I spent these four years helping over 400 students to apply to four-year institutions, attain scholarships, and navigate the higher education system. I created this channel in order to share my knowledge of college access as it pertains to graduate school.

Thank you for your videos! Would you consider a video specifically about the in-person interview for admission for Masters programs?
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool

Hi Moriah, I have a few videos about interviews on my channel and I plan to upload an interview focused workshop I did for a group of students this summer next year. I try to upload videos based on the application process. For example, right now, prospective applicants should be preparing to apply. In the next few months, the focus should be SOP essays, GRE, CV preparation. Interviews usually take place starting January so I think I’m going to upload the video in December. Subscribe and be on the lookout for those videos. Thanks.

Thank you for this!! Looking to apply for a M.s., I was unsure on how many faculty members I should email about program opportunities

If it’s a research based Masters, then I would contact as many faculty with related research. If your MS doesn’t require a master thesis then you don’t really need to contact faculty. You can find most opportunities on their website. The contacting faculty is more important at the PhD level. Good luck!

Great content and thanks for your insights. Please what about a situation where the academic program assistant says it is not a prerequisite to contact a faculty before applying?
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool 2 года назад
Hi, contacting faculty prior to applying is not a prerequisite for admissions. You should, however, include at least 2-3 faculty who you want to work with in your statement of purpose and explain why they are a good fit.

hi! thanks for this video, it's super informative and useful- i just wanted to know, if faculty does not respond to your e-mail, is it still worth applying to that program? thanks!

Hi! You should still apply. A response or no response does not determine the outcome of the admissions decision. It all depends on your application package.

Do HGSE provide post - doctoral fellowship in educational research
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool 3 месяца назад
They do not, but if you get your own funding, HGSE and a faculty at the school can potentially host you. You would have to apply as a visiting scholar, of course.

I have applied to terminal/ non-thesis master's programs. University website says contacting an advisor is necessary to be admitted so I asked grad program coordinators if I still need to contact advisors as a non-thesis student. Most of them said yes. Please guide me what should I write in my email as a non-thesis master's applicant.

I’ve never heard of that before that’s interesting. Which programs are you applying to at what institutions? Usually, you would find faculty who’s research and work is closely aligned with yours. If accepted, you will get a faculty advisor who will help guide you through the program. Having an expert in the field you want to pursue is critical for academic success but also career prospects. I would ask about there work and questions about the program. Since it’s not thesis based then there is not need to speak about the research end unless that is something you want to explore as a student. Good luck!

@@IvanValdovinosGradSchool I have applied to MS Food Science and grad program directors said the coursework or capstone project is still related to research, so I need an advisor. So, I am planning to ask faculty just to guide me through the program as a supervisor and stating their research work as the reason for choosing them. Should I expect an interview after sending the email or will they accept straightaway as I am going to do a coursework MS which doesn't require grant or lab space.

@@manasas9443 Reaching out to faculty doesn’t not guarantee you a spot in the program. You still need to go through the application process. If the program has an interview round then you will COE it a formal interview. I’ve never heard of programs requiring you to speak to prospective advisors prior to applying. It’s a best practice to contact faculty beforehand, however, that doesn’t guarantee you anything. It only allows you to gain a better sense of that particular faculty is a good fit as an potential advisor. In your statement of purpose, you should add the names of faculty whom you want to be mentored by and explain how their expertise will help you execute your capstone project.

Hi, I have masters from core IC Engine and now want to do a phd in innovation management field. My current job profile does makes me work in innovation, will that be enough. How hard is it to get accepted being from a different field ?
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool
@IvanValdovinosGradSchool Год назад
Your previous work experience or major does not always have to align to the graduate program you plan to apply to. The key is to tell the committee why you have decided to change fields and what key experiences led you to the new field. Moreover, how have your experiences prepared you to be successful in the new field? You need to make this case clear. Do this in your statement of purpose.
