If you’re comfortable but bored at your current position, you’re in the danger zone. Here are some ways to keep growing without leaving your company.
Whitney Johnson, an executive coach and author of "Disrupt Yourself", says we give a lot of airtime to building disruptive products and services, to buying and/or investing in disruptive companies, and we should. Both are vital engines of economic growth. But, the most overlooked engine of growth is the individual. I've thought about this topic quite a lot and I came to a similar conclusion. I think that when you can teach someone about every aspect of your role then you're ready to hand it to them and move on.

Exactly how I’m feeling right now. Glad I found this! Im falling ill 🤧 more than often, have lost all motivation in the work I love, and not grooming the people who I lead. All of this is adding upto massive amounts of guilt and my credibility is taking a hit. Guess it’s time to have this conversation

Seeking out a mentor is a powerful boost on the journey. It has helped me accelerate learning, have challenging conversations, and network to find those opportunities. Also, a word of caution on being constantly challenged. It might lead to burnout if not managed actively.

@@acash93 It's harsh for sure. Not saying it's smooth sailing, but as they say, you got to take a leap of faith. You can hedge against the risk by creating a base before signing up as a mentee for example agreeing on some rules of engagement.

Huh... I just left my old company where I was at the top of the S curve and now in a new one where I'm clearly at the bottom and everything feels challending. Hearing about this "S curve" notion totally makes sense. Thanks for making this video. I feel a lot more confident now.

Excellent video! Exactly why I left a job I really loved, they wouldn't let me learn more and challenge myself within the company, so I was getting utterly bored doing tasks I by then had come to really master to the point it felt as though I could have performed these while asleep!

Thank you for this talk. Glad that I did the right thing. Having managers who can’t recognize the need for employees to grow is awful, esp those who only focus on their own development, as if employees aren’t the same human being… Talking about equality… And some managers don’t let grow but push/press down instead.

these words have been exactly how I have felt with my previous company. great people, great work life balance, good pay, great job overall, except I was getting deathly bored. Looking back I should have asked to do different roles within the organization but didn't want to do more work because of my complacency, so I chose to leave, which in turn was probably more work to do.

The way my old company messed me about when I had reached this point of boredom and tried to relocate to a different, more international office (over a year of false promises and veiled threats) broke my connection with the concept of a job and especially my emotional connection to the job that I had loved. More importantly it obliterated a sense of 'naivety' (I know that the corporate world is not a fairy tale but I think people need to have some faith in what they are a part of. I don't even have faith in what I hear from my lecturers). I work for myself now and while I am good at what I do, I have never felt the excitement I had before. I think it's important to remember that your boss or supervisor might not always have your interests at heart and may actually be actively working to sabotage any plans. As a professional or employee you need to identify someone to trust with your professional / career strategy

I liked this video. It is related to my experience. I left my job bec. there is no growth or opportunities inside the organization. This made me suck! Then I'm finding a better opportunity outside the organization. Sometimes the most scariest thing will lead you to beautiful destination.

My chosen career, SECOND career that is, is a" NEVER knowing it all" because the laws keep changing. I've been at it and learning, and still don't know it all and never will. The people I work with have been at it for decades. They ARE helpful, but I can't help but feel as if I'm not enough and maybe nver will be. I need an "atta boy" but will never receive it. I have to do so much in the 8-9 hour day, dealing with personalities, and flow of information that I want to scream. It's the various personalities that actually piss me off. People can be so rude, especially when you are trying to help them!!!

This is a bitter conceptual pill to swallow for professionals in fields that have S Curves that evolve over a decade of schooling, residency, fellowship, etc. But, love the perspective regardless. Thanks for this one, HBR.

The S-Curve aka second curve or the sigmoid curve is beautifully explained in the book "The empty raincoat". Other concepts like donut principle are also explained in detail in that book. Anybody interested should definitely read it.

I think the challenge here is often there is not an incentive to jump on a new S curve. If the culture of the company rewards you for sitting in your position at no risk, many would take that and have enough leisure to consider this a good option. The responsibility for the company should be to gently coerce people to move roles within a certain time frame. And if they don't, the 'gentle' becomes progressively less gentle.

I wish I would’ve done this in my previous role and just stayed at my old job versus going to a new company. It hasn’t been a pleasant experience and just doesn’t feel like the best fit.

I've just come to this crossroads myself, I would add, don't let your current employee be the decider of what your ceiling is. If you're willing to take the risk, make that leap and start that S curve once again.

What if you feel that you constantly in the beginning? Everytime you begin to go into the "sweet spot", you need to learn something new, or there is a change. This is how I personally feel most of the time in tech right now. I am a professional software developer.

One question: How do we justify that the move is good for the company and we will help them solve the problems when a considerable amount of learning is involved? Use of transferable skills or else?

I believe the reference to jump to a new S-curve doesn’t necessarily mean you’re starting from the bottom. Imagine you’re already a master in what you’re doing, refreshing your S-curve would be to utilize your gained/available skills into something more challenging, this way we will continue to learn and further master ourselves and move on to next then next then next S-curve. That means the S-curve will look like a stairs shaped line on the chart.

Can you really go back to the very bottom of the S-curve? Unless there is a complete change in career, but even then, with a certain work experience there are always skills to build on, so the jump will rather be to the middle part, right? From the employers perspective, I would not want to promote someone to a job that they will need months to figure out the basics of... I myself changed my employer after 10 years and found myself just below the plateau and reached it again after about 1 year... Feels stupid. Then I was offered a very new position, but I felt I was too low on that S-curve and did not completely want to leave my plateau, because there are some aspects of my current job that i don't want to leave behind. It's not always that easy to find a suitable new S-curve, I think. But this video opened my eyes nonetheless!

In this video, the speaker talks about how to disrupt your career and yourself. When you are in the same role for a long time and you are not learning anymore, it's time to disrupt yourself. The S-curve is a learning curve, and everyone is on it. There are three parts to the S-curve: the launch point, the sweet spot, and the high end of the curve. When you are at the high end of the curve, you become a master, but you can get bored, and that's when you need to disrupt yourself. If you stay too long at the high end of the curve, it's like the death zone, and you need to do something about it. The speaker advises being proactive and crafting a conversation with your manager about doing something new, rather than expecting them to figure it out for you.

One should never invite disruption in one’s life. These are used to find out dancers in a company, even if are a church going FROG who knows only jumping. Rather then inviting disruption try meeting new people and talk to people.

What if you're in a state where after the first curve, you fall into a difficult second curve that doesn't allow for mastery and induces unnecessary stress and nausea? Her first statement about people waking up and saying they have to work; what if that feeling is substantial dislike for the work? The team, mission, and boss are good, but the job is nauseating?

Then change jobs through tears and depression and keep searching and keep trying to be positive through the job search, it will take two-three months but once you are out, you won't remember the nauseating experience of the old job and you'll only regret why you didn't start the job search sooner. Fingers crossed, you clearly don't belong there and have to leave asap for your mental health xx
