As an Agile Project Management application, Atlassian's Jira software helps businesses organize their projects, track bugs, time tracking, among many other uses. Components in the Jira software can help streamline a project especially when there are multiple issues and users. However each team uses components very differently, depending on how that team is built and how that team works together. So how do Jira components work and when is the best time to use them?
Jira components are used to group issues within a project into smaller parts. The more efficiently project management admins are able to address challenges, the smoother a project will flow. This is where Jira components come into play, they are used to group issues within a project into smaller parts.
Project Management is crucial for the success of any business, understanding how Jira components work is critical to achieve that success

Thanks for the explanation! Can you also group Jira tickets according to their components on the Kanban board?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 3 года назад
Hey Yvonne! That's a great question! This is possible do with Swimlanes ( support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/configure-swimlanes/ ), but it takes a few extra steps to setup. You'll open the Board settings, and then select Swimlanes from the settings menu and then select 'Queries' from the 'Base Swimlanes on' dropdown. Then you'll need to add a new query for each component that you want to use to group issues (i.e. 'component = Database'). This will group issues by each query that you create. It will also have a default group for 'Everything else" or issues that do not match any of the queries (or do not have any components). For more info, here's a page in the Atlassian Community of someone answering the same question - community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Kanban-Board-Components-as-Swimlanes/qaq-p/842001 I hope this helps!! Thanks for watching!

Hey guys, what a great video, thanks! My questions are : what is the main difference between a component and a label in Jira? And one more - what does it mean to be a component lead? What kind of responsibility for that person in the situation when the issue with the component is assigned for another person?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 Год назад
So, the main difference (outside of having a Component Lead) is that components are managed by project admins - labels can be created by anyone in the system and are often subject to people using different variations of the same name (e.g. Jira, JSW, Jira_Software, etc.) - Thanks for the question!

Hey Josh! Thanks for this great video. Let me ask you something. Can I use components to define features?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 2 года назад
Hey Eric! The answer to your question really depends on what you mean by 'features' here. If you are referring to different product features that an engineering team might deliver, then no, I would not use components for this, but more likely an Epic or another issue type if you are using Advanced roadmaps. My general approach (with occasional exceptions) is that if the idea/category/project that I'm trying to track has a distinct start and end date, then it is NOT a component.

Josh, can we create a sprints inside a components? from project manager standpoint: if I would like to run 3 separated sprints for different components. the different teams are, the timing, the customers etc. For example: (1)Security, (2)Technican support and (3)New modules development.
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 Год назад
So, there's really no way to directly link sprints directly to components. You can simply just add all relevant issues with a specific component into a specific sprint. If you are running separate sprints with separate teams, I would wonder if it wouldn't make sense to have these teams in separate Jira projects instead of a combined project and then dividing them by component. You can always create cross-project reports where needed, but it's something I'd consider here.

Hello, one question, how to automatically assign components from Story in Sub-task created under this story?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 2 года назад
Hi Ladislav - If you're using Jira Cloud, this can be done with Automation for Jira. You can find some more info here - community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/Jira-Cloud-Automation-Subtask-Component-copying-is-not-working/qaq-p/1406387 Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!

Hi. Can I use components as sub-projects folders for a unique client? I'm working in Cloud Computing projects, we are using Jira but we have a problem with managing multiple projects for each client as Jira doesn't have/allow sub-folders. Is this a solution? Is there another solution? Thanks

Would you know how to search a JQL to return a list of components?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 3 года назад
Hey Henry! JQL will only return issues. There really isn't a way to use JQL to get a list of components available in a project.

What happens when there are multiple components selected with different component leads- who is the default assignee?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 3 года назад
Hey John! Excellent question. I believe that the lead of the first component selected by the user will be assigned the issue.
@DeepanshuNatani
@DeepanshuNatani 3 года назад
Hi John, If an issue has multiple components, and if these components have different Component Leads, the default assignee will be set to the Component Lead of the component that is first alphabetically.

How can I find a component unique ID in JIRA ?
@joshkochelek9691
@joshkochelek9691 3 года назад
Hi Ankita! Good question! As far as I know, this is not easily accessible through the UI. However, you can use a REST API call through the browser (assuming you are logged in Jira in that browser) by using the specific REST API address, like discussed here - community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Core-Server-questions/How-can-I-find-a-Component-ID-of-a-specific-Project/qaq-p/111851 You'll, just copy and paste the URL from the discussion into your browser's address bar, and update the domain and project ID and then send. You'll see the returning JSON values on the screen.

The Jira designers must have a directive to make everything as insanely difficult to use as possible e.g. their stupid search script. Drives me nuts and it never works... and their scatter gun UI design. I can never find anything. The whole thing so quantitative. Components are another example. I'm tearing my hair out over this crap... none of this made any sense, but thank you.
