Dag Alain! I'm enjoying following your lessons. I lived in Belgium for a few years, where I was learning Dutch, but never managed to become fluente. Now living in Glasgow, I'm back studying the language as a hobby. Thank you for the videos.

Hm, halen is more to get, nemen is more to take. But there are many exceptions, especially if you add separable verbs to the mix...

No, all verbs with her- aren't separable. Same with ont- and be-.

Can afhalen/ophalen be used in the figurative sense as in English? For example, my dad could say he's going to pick up groceries, which just means he's going to obtain them. But it sounds like these two are mainly used in the literal, specific action of picking something up. Dank u voor alles!

Hm, you could also say 'ik ga de groenten afhalen' as in I'm going to get the groceries, so I guess you can use them both for the literal and the figurative sense. Graag gedaan!
