How and Where to Adjust Your Footstretcher to 

This video shows where you should set your footstretcher to, as well as the tracks (aka slides) in the boat. You want your outside hand to be relatively over the gunwale of the shell, if your hand is too far inside the shell, move the stretcher towards the stern, if opposite, then do the opposite.
