Wow, Thank you for sharing this. I wonder if she knew how many people would still love sewing with them even to this day? I love the machines and enjoy working with them so much, hopefully I take the same care as they did when they were building them. I appreciate what your mother did!
I just found your channel after I brought home a two-tone Singer 301A. Love how you're so thorough and to the detail on your explanations...I'm learning so much from your video series👍
Don't forget to grease the motor - on the motor you can see the chrome tube with the hole in it. It can only hold so much, so squeeze it in until you can't put any more in. A properly lubricated motor makes a huge difference.
You are correct! I looked back through this video and the one on reassembling the motor and I don't see where I mentioned filling the grease port. I will have to add that in the future. Thank you!
Thanks for your videos; they are so helpful and you did such a beautiful job on that 301. I just got a mocha 301 and I’m just thrilled and want to do all the maintenance myself. I can maintain my longarm but know next to nothing about a DSM!
Thank you! I think the 301’s are easy to maintain, not much can go wrong with them. The more time you spend with the machine the more confident you will get. Hopefully my videos help build your confidence, the 301’s are excellent machines!
Hi! In this series we took care of the grease wick when we reassembled the motor which is why I left it out. If your motor has a little silver port on the bottom there should be a hole in that tube that you can pump a little grease into. Some of the motors didn’t have the ports, they removed them from the design later on. If you haven’t watched my 301 motor disassembly and reassembly videos, check them out. Even if you don’t take your motor apart they will help you understand how it works. I hope that helps! I should have at least pointed out the port in this video so thank you for pointing that out!
Another great video! I have a question about the gears on a 201. Do you grease those gears? I noticed in the original service manual that all of the gears are to be oiled.
Hi! From what I understand the manuals are correct. The gears are meshed so perfectly that you just need to oil them, you don’t need to grease them. When in doubt, I would always go with whatever the Singer manuals said. That doesn’t mean you won’t find a 201 where someone greased the gears at some point. I’d clean something like that up and go back to oiling and see how it runs. If anyone else has an opinion on this, chime in!
Well, that depends on how often you sew with it! If it isn’t often (like once a month for a couple hours at most) then every 4-6 months I would check it and see if it needs a little extra. If you sew 3 or more times a week then I would check once a week and paint a little on with a brush if they need it. It really helps to keep a little kit of grease, oil and a brush handy and you can do the maintenance in minutes!
