IP addresses are organized and allocated hierarchically. This simplifies both IP address administration and the routing tables used by internet routers. The result is that IP addresses have a variable-length prefix that identifies the organization that administers them and path that is used when routing packets. The original internet design set up three address classes, although this decision has been revisited since then.

This is information is somewhat fuzzy and is not accurate. An address with a 0 as it’s first bit indicated a class A address. An address with it’s first bits 10 indicated a class B address. Each of those classes has a default mask. The class A mask is /8 the class B mask is /16. I love your style and delivery. Thank you!
