I speak English, French and Portuguese but I haven't put more than a few minutes of study into Italian, yet I'm floored by how much of what he said I was able to pick up on. That's just what I love about romance languages 😊 you learn one and the next one is easier, and your comprehension of all of them gets better as you progress

It doesn't work exactly the same, but once you start accumulating a few (especially if they're similar), you can switch mid-sentence without warning. Generally, it's not that huge of an issue once you get into the rhythm, but it can happen easily. For instance, about a month ago, I gave a presentation to a class in China in Chinese about Italy and I kept accidentally switching to Italian, because I was thinking of my time in Italy. It happens and you really have to pause to recenter yourself.

Very insightful and useful video. I particularly liked Susanna's idea of intentionally avoiding languages the night before a linguistic performance of sorts. Languages are, in my experience, a good balance of fun, dedicated work, and performance. The environment can feel a lot more stressful when actually speaking with others who know the language and it can be easy to allow words from other (especially related) languages to slip in. Thanks for this video!

You guys, the three of you did it great. I wanna be a polyglot too I guess with time I'll be able to master and polish the languages I'm learning. But for now I'm proud to call myself a bilingual, that's something :)

Very motivating to watch. I know that speaking multiple languages is not a 'super power', but its difficult to not be in awe each time I hear a multilingual conversation especially between such amazing polyglots. I am less than a year into learning my first second language at 32 years of age. It's very hard, but very enjoyable! Thank you for sharing this video.

An inspiring video! I am (merely) bilingual, but have a whole host of friends that I grew up with that are also bilingual in the same two languages. Ever since we were children, we expressed ourselves in a mismash of the two languages, using whichever vocabulary best expressed our thoughts. For example, English phrases were used for technical words but Persian phrases for more emotive or idiomatic phrases. Of course this would change depending on our moods or the topic at hand! Our parents would constantly remind us to "stick to one language at a time!" because they were worried we would forget how to speak fluent Persian. I found it fascinating to hear about your thoughts on feeling free to speak in whichever language you want to speak in, to not censor yourself. After hearing this, I have a new-found appreciation for the environment I am in, that I have the freedom to not censor myself in that way. Thanks for the video and the multilingual transcript! I'm currently looking to improve my French, so I found that listening comprehension particularly useful!

Shaded Sun Hi, when I read your comment, I almost recognized myself in your sentences. My mother tongue is Croatian, yet I speak/read and write English pretty well and also I'm half Persian and know a little bit of persian. It's actually my weakest language. Recently I got an "urge" and interest in pursuing it, and getting better at it. Maybe i'll get a plane ticket to my relatives in Iran xD

Buen video, Luca. Dime por favor, piensas que es mejor aprender y dominar un idioma antes de aprender otro? Or is it ok to just "kind of" know one (o sea, como intermedio) and then take on a new one? It's interesting to here this. I speak three languages at home and I have a few friends that speak all three languages(to a certain extent) so we express ourselves in all three languages sometimes. I can say five words in Russian then a few in English and after that words in Hebrew. It's a whole mess but it's funny and interesting to listen to. :) I'm glad I watched this and that Luca spoke Italian because when I listened I noticed that I understood a lot more of Italian than I did before. offwithurhead Try to follow Steve Kaufmann's channel on youtube. He has some of the greatest advice on how to learn languages. For one, don't try to learn languages just in order to impress people, do it for the fun of it. Enjoy the process itself! Try to use only material that you find interesting, and look for texts and podcasts, etc with topics that are enjoyable to you. Be patient and eventually you'll get to the point where you're fluent in a new language.

Latin, and therefore all other romance languages, are part of a language family called the Italic language family. But Latin in itself is the only one that survived eventually developing into the Romance languages. All other italic languages are extinct, and as far as I know, not that much is known about them.

Susanna speaks Russian very good. I can't beleive she is not Russian. Luka speaks Russian also very good with short phrases. But in more complicated sentences I can hear his Mediterranean accent. I can here some Polish words in Richard's speach what means it's hard to speak some slavic languages without confusing them. But Susanna... I'm very impressed especially with her fluency and her accent.

Finalmente un italiano che parla lo spagnolo al mio livello!! E poi sinceramente non capisco perché tanti italiani quando parlano spagnolo pronunciano come i sudamericani

Lots of fun. I had to pretend that I stepped out to get a cup of coffee during the Russian bits since I don't know that language. I hope that you didn't say anything super fantastic in that section, the critical linguistic puzzle piece that would have turned my language-learning world inside out. Somebody let me know, please.
