This video is a detailed description of of how and why to prune fig trees. I have two massive figs that have problems because they were left unpruned for years. Pruning is necessary to keep the fruit at picking height and the plants full and less likely to fall apart. Ice, snow, and wind are the enemy of a large fig tree.

Thanks for the info. My fig is about 6' and producing very well this year. But the Mockingbirds and squirrels see a dinner plate. Had a 10' X 10' X 8' frame built around it and covered with chicken wire. I will maintain the fig to that size. Thanks for explaining how and when to prune.

Jim, absolutely love your videos. In this case, even though you posted this six months ago, I find such useful information that applies to me right now. I have 5 gorgeous fig trees that are in desperate shape. My cows ate 2 of them back to nubs (probably a better pruning job than I could do!) and 3 of them, though just beautiful, have reached over 10-12 ft and have to be cut back to be of any future use. Thanks for the info. I'll give it a few more weeks to winter, and then get the pruners and get busy. Thanks so much, really enjoy your channel.

It's late January. I've got two fig trees I'm going to be pruning, maybe this weekend. I will say, from previous years, that I get a lot more than a foot or two of new growth in a single season...like 3 or 4 times that much. From knee high to out of reach. I'm in north Florida.

The problem with pruning so low is having to wait a couple years to get figs again. So what I did was make a long wooden dowel with a coat hanging screwed into the top. That way I just pull the branches down to harvest. Rather do that then wait years to get more.

Without knowing the exact method of pruning, the past 3 years, we've cut our fig tree way down from 8 ft to4 ft. In the spring, it always grows back even taller and we have an overabundance of figs each ear

I'm in Knoxville Tennessee. Last year we had a freeze that took all my leaves and all my little figlets. I thought it had died except my new little growth tips were still green so after I waited and waited and it didn't come back I thought well I'm going to prune half of it and see which side does better. After I pruned it it still took a while but it started to grow. That turned into a recovery year for the tree. The year following that, this year, I am harvesting so many figs. I only took off a foot or less and I stuck them in some dirt and half of them rooted. The side that I pruned had probably three times as many figs on it as the side that I didn't prune. I have picked 4 gallons of figs that are now in the freezer waiting until I make jam and I have 2 gallons in the dehydrator as of this morning to make fig Newtons with. Wherever I made my cut it was right above one of the little nodes and it was cut on a slope. That was left on the tree. The piece that I trimmed off I tried to find a spot where two of the nodes were closer together I scraped the bark a little bit around that branch I cut it off on a slope right below the lower node and stuck it in dirt. I made sure the soil stayed down and I sprayed the leaves to help the plant absorb moisture while it didn't have any roots. I give my rooted cuttings away. This year I kept two to add to my garden.

I have a 20 year old tree and every year I prune it back to 3 feet tall! The first of the year of figs, my first figs are 3” in diameter! Huge! Then they come out to 1 1/2”-2” figs! The tree by the end of summer is about 15’ tall and 20 feet wide! During the summer I take 12 figs per day off!

Thanks for the video :) Does each node have the capacity to produce both a breba fig and a maincrop fig (albeit at different times)? My climate isn't warm enough for maincrop to ripen, so could I just remove the immature maincrop figs in the summer, to stimulate breba crop figs the following spring? Or would taking off the maincrop fig at a node mean that those nodes can no longer produce a breba the following spring? If that's the case, how would one discourage the maincrop figs without hampering breba production? Thanks so much for any advice.

Thank you for a video that includes established plantings! We inherited 2 6-8 foot fig trees from our home's former owners. I am looking to prune them in a month or two. They have a great structure already; the main large trunks branch out around 4 feet from the ground. Should I cut them all the way back to the crotches of the big branches (2"+) or should I only cut the smaller branches?

This was the first year my turkey fig tree brought me over 40 figs, just like that! Yes, it took it around the fifth year, which was 2023 to produce. Last year it gave me a handful, but so much more this year. My tree is now at the 4-5-foot height. I need to prune it back. This will be my first time and I do not want to do it wrong. I need to look on your channel to see how I need to prune my tree so I can get more fruits. I live in Lexington SC and need to know when the best time is to prune; being the end of October 2023 now. I do want to keep it no bigger than 5 feet for height. Can you linkl me one of your videos to show me how to prune the tree and pruning shears etc? Thank you so much!

Great Video Jim, we have a 2-year-old fig tree that he planted in the front of our SW facing property. We tried growing a fig tree twice before and failed probably due to poor placement. Anyway we pruned it into two main branches and it already has started putting on leaves, Question: at the end of the season, should I cut any of the branches or leaves off? Second, we seem to have a traveling branch right at the soil line which has begun to shoot up leaves. Should I cut that back to the main truck? Thanks, ChocoBill

When I prune my in ground fig trees , I cut them 3 - 4 ft from the ground. The finished tree resembles a bowl with a hollow center for good air flow. I don't use a ladder to harvest the fruit. I let my trees get wider but not taller each year, good luck !

You mention that all the figs are on 'this years growth'. In Western Washington - Olympia USDA zone 8a, the fruit is born on last season's growth. We only get the breba crop. The growing season is not long or warm enough to allow for development of fruit on new growth. Unfortunately, pruning causes loss of production, but it must be done any way.

Hey Jim! I loved your video and how informative it was. I live in Queensland, Australia and I planted a fig tree in our back yard about 4 months ago. However I forgot to prune it when I planted it into the ground, so now I have multiple umbrella branches coming from the base of the tree. We are currently in the middle of summer (which is extremely hot!) and I can’t decide whether to trim those branches off now or later. Would it be better to wait until winter to prune, or should I get them out of the way now? Thanks!

Love your videos, though a quick question... Assuming you can use a ladder to pick high up fruit, and also don't get frost damage as you mentioned here, could you explain the logic behind pruning in general? Because in my mind, the growth of plants are somewhat exponential, meaning that surely leaving the plant to grow bigger will yield bigger fruit quantities, as the growth will capture more light energy than if you pruned it back. Surely the higher and wider (bigger surface area the tree covers) the tree grows, the more light intercepted, and bigger fruit set. I don't understand why pruning increases yields of fruit in general, because surely in nature, fruit trees/bushes have their interest in reproduction and therefore producing as much fruit as possible, and they do this without pruning. For example you see these absolutely huge fig trees in people's gardens with tonnes of fruit on them, which makes sense as the large growth support a large fruit crop. It confuses me as to why persistently cutting a tree and wounding it through pruning would benefit the fruit set. If pruning does indeed provide more fruit (more reproductive capacity), then why do plants not naturally self-prune, as surely they have the same interest in a large fruit crop as we do? Thanks so much, this question has been bugging me for some time!

Conor Hope A bigger tree may have more fruit but a well pruned tree will have superior fruit. They don't have to be pruned, but it allows better light and air penetration into the plant. Also the bigger the plant and greater number of fruit could lead to more drought stress potential.

The logic is, why does grape vines are prunes every year? Because it produces more fruits, better fruits and most fruits trees needs to be well taken care of. If you don't, you'll get more brunches and leaves. If you lived in a four seasons climate, then your growing season is shorter, it will just grow leaves and not fruits. My fig tree was about 2 yrs. old and I pruned it last year and it was way healthier and yielded bigger fruits the next summer.

I live in a huge b alley of farms & ranches ect. Every single tree, Bush, vine whatever is pruned accordingly. This gives greater yield and better crop. Trust me the farmer isn't interested in allowing the trees whatever naturally occurs, he or she is in the business of getting abundant harvest since he has to pay for water, property taxes, Mortgage, association fee, labor costs etc etc. My one fig tree took down the fence, a 110 feet wood fence. We had to fork out $7k to put in a new one this April. I was injured in 2020 and it just grew taller, wider, fatter and unruly. My poor older neighbor had to prop up the fence several times. I also propagate the cutting and give away.

Hi……I have a brown Turkey fig tree that I’ve had approximately 15 years. I’ve never really gotten any figs from this tree and I’m not sure what’s going on with it. It starts our looking beautiful with large green leaves in the spring and then the leaves will get rust color spots in them and then the leaves will drop off and that’s the end of it for the season. What’s going wrong with this tree?

Jim, I live in Missouri where it can get to zero in the winter. Is there any fig trees that I can keep outdoors all the time.

Can I cut back the limbs now that are just bearing new leaf growth and little to no fruit? I have only about 5 or six significant size, though hard, figs, while other very healthy branches are only bearing leaves.

I would, if you need to get it under control.

Hoping you can clarify: You said after your figs were picked, you'd cut the branch back. Do you mean you'd do that still during growing season? Everything I'm reading indicates we're to wait until the tree is dormant to prune. I want to prune my tree now (both for shape, root energy, and health) but the season is just now over. Notes: The tree was planted in April of 18- this is its first year and it produced a good few handfuls of delicious fruit. It is in a corner where it gets limited sun and my goal is to let it get tall enough to top the 6 foot fence (merely for sun access) and then keep at that height. Currently it's about 3.5-4 feet high. Based on what you're saying figs grow on average 1-2 feet? So if I prune just the side shoots and clean up the interior, next year it will grow to 4-6 feet high and then I just need to keep it there?

Oh man!!...........I need help! I have a 25' Fig tree. I believe mine is either a Calimyrna or Adriatic fig , and with the super wet winter and then instant sun here in the NW , my tree exploded with dang near baseball sized figs. I lost three 12' - 14' limbs due to the weight of the figs. I need to figure out how to prune this thing before something bad happens to it. I believe my tree is around 25 - 30 years old.

I've espaliered a fig tree and am uncertain how to prune it this winter. Do I trim back all the new growth all the way back to the main frame (not leaving any of the branch at all), and if so, does that mean i will see brand new branches which will then bear fruit? I think I did exactly that last year and this year the growth was out of control. When the growth happens in spring, can I do light pruning then to keep at least some of the flat shape? or will I forfeit most of my crop? thanks!
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 лет назад
You will forfeit some of the crop, but the remaining fruit may actually be superior.

@@JimPutnam Thanks for your quick reply! I did some pruning yesterday because it desperately needed shaping--hopefully not too early as we sometimes get warm spells in January (I'm in Northern California). Will hope for the best!

My fig is very big, and possibly quite old. It produces lots figs every summer. I do prune off long droopy branches down every winter but this year I forgot to get to one large branch that bothers me. I’d like to cut it now but the tree is now budding. Is it too late for this year to cut off a 2”-3” dia branch?

Great vid - perfect info - Thanks! 2 questions: - Can you show how in the late winter we would know which is one year growth? - On what wood would a fig tree fruit in the summer of 2018 - would it be the wood that grows in 2018 or the wood that grew in the summer of 2017?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 7 лет назад
The wood from from 2018 is the only thing that will fruit in 2018. Same years growth.

So, fig trees need to be pruned in the fall or spring? I thought fig trees weren't a hardy tree.. We live in some zone 5/6..

The great cutback didn't work well for us. Cut back 2 years ago to waist high. That year no figs. Then it grew back this year to 12 feet again! Lots of figs a little further down but most over our heads. Luckily the new growth is limber so maybe we can pull them down to pick without breaking limbs.🤐

How would you prune a fig tree that is about 20 years old and has not had anything done to it for at least 10 years.

I wished he would answer most of these questions, mine is 30+ yrs and bad suckers coming up under the ground, im going to cut them all off at trunk and all branches around it in half, don't know what it will do but it is so over grown, im in Australia, vic.

I bought a home that has a very mature fig tree.. it is almostt two stories high and probably the width of a two car garage. It is nestled between several other large trees so is shaded. It is mostly bare branches and such in the middle and towards the back where there is less sun (due to other large trees) but looks very lush from the outside. It does produce figs but they don't seem very large nor do they have a lot of flavor. I know for a fact it was most likely not taken care of for at least 10 years and who knows how long before that. How much can I trim it down? the trunk alone is probably 2 feet or more across.. I have yet to find a article that tackles a mature tree of this nature and I'd appreciate any help.. Thanks

Hello, i also bought a house with a huge fig tree that has not been taken care of for about 20 years. Fruit yield is small, but leaves are big. How much trimming is to much..the tree is easily over 20 ft tall and wide.

You gotta get ruthless and prepare for a season of no fruit. Neatly prune it back to the structure you want . It will regrow

Hi Jim,not long after I planted a brown turkey, it got overgrown with himalayan blackberries. Consequently, even though the blackberries were finally controlled a couple of years ago, the tree has almost no branching and what is there is at the top. Can I take it back to just the trunk? And, if I do, will it then start to branch? I have been afraid that would kill it completely, but it is very sad as it is. Second, are they self fertile? I only have the one. Even if it can be salvaged, and it hurts to kill a plant that survived such circumstances, do I need a second to get it to fruit?
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 5 лет назад
Yes, they are self fruiting. If you are nervous about pruning just cut it halfway back in the late winter. That should be plenty to get it branching from lower in the plant.
@Gigi-fv9ky
@Gigi-fv9ky 5 лет назад
@@JimPutnam thanks, Jim! Just to make sure I understand, the only branching at all, and it isnt much, is at the very top, and you think it would be okay to cut it back in half where there is just the one main stem that I would be chopping back?

Can you prune the fig tree during the summer as it’s fruit is coming in? Or will it kill the tree? It was already pruned last winter, and the tree has overgrown double in size. And now I am having a problem with an infestation of green beetles and gnats. I don’t want to spray the tree with chemicals either. The tree is too tall for me to reach up there to pick figs and the droppings from the beetles are making a huge mess on the ground below. I want so badly to just cut all the branches and willing to lose the fruit in order to stop this gross mess from continuing. Help!
@JimPutnam
@JimPutnam 4 года назад
I don't think you would kill it, but it would probably prefer to be cut after winter.
