Have you ever returned to the scene of older adventures when your group was much higher-level?

In our first adventure, the party went up against an evil druid who was planning to make nature overtake the world by force, so obviously they had to stop that. In the process, they kinda really pissed off the druid and made him think that there was basically no salvation for the world, which, when the druid was killed, turned him into a Revenant seeking revenge and to end what he started but now with much less savory methods. The reveal when they returned to the place of the first adventure and it was nothing but overgrown dead nature and corpses was majestic.

we played a campaign based on the shackles campaign for pathfinder, set in a modified version of faerun (the continent had been split apart and the pirate islands were in the sea of the fallen stars, which was an ocean in this version). the dm had us play a prologue first, a caravan escort mission from baldurs gate to westgate. in westgate, we got to know the thieves guild and a dwarven clan and took on a mission for the temple of calistria. that mission ended with us getting stabbed in the back, as we were made to fall asleep and found ourselves waking up as slaves on a pirate ship. after lots of adventuring, which involved taking over the ship and becoming our own crew, traveling across the sea, being banished to an underwater city and returning, winning an island in a ship race, ridding said island of gnolls and cyclops and shars corruption, and much more, we made a trip to westgate in preparation for the finale. we met up with the thieves guild and the dwarven clan again, the latter of which was the background for my new character, as my old one had died for the final time in hell. the campaign also had us visit some locations repeatedly, but this was by far the greatest level gap between two times in the same place.

The talk with Kaylie was (I think) the first instance that showed how amazing Sam is at improvising an amazing speech. And it's a skill that comes back multiple times in campaigns and one shots.

"Improving", (as in "improve," to "make better") or "improvising" (as in, to perform spontaneously without preparation)?

It’s also the first moment I think the game really connected in a personal way for Sam. It was all fun and jokes before this, but now he actually has something to ground him as a character and player that isn’t just goofy. We can also thank this for resulting in some of the most heart wrenching moments later…
@literallynamedcalypso172

Sam's response to the revelation about Kaylie is really one of the first times, that I feel at least, we are shown just how much potential Scanlan has as a character if everything he does is not taken as a joke or thrown to the side. (bit of foreshadowing). It also demonstrates Sam's amazing improv skills.
@danielbeshers1689
@danielbeshers1689 9 месяцев назад
Something I would also add regarding this episode, and tips for non-DM players: really consider Sam's response to the situation and how him playing into it leads to several other incredibly important events, particularly in an episode that occurs almost FIFTY (50!) shows later, over a year in the real world. It all starts here, where Matt gives Sam the option for some character development and Sam chooses the "Hold my ale" option. Someone more protective of their character, more precious about controlling their narrative arc, could have made very different choices. Sam, clearly, was not nearly so rigid about keeping Scanlan and his place in the party unchanged.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, Kaylie's nat 1 is probably the most memorable nat 1 in the game. If you let them, the dice are a good maybe even the best story teller.

I like the subtle foreshadowing Matt gives through Daxio when he says the walls between the planes are thinnest at Winter’s Crest.

Scanlan's entirely wholesome, heartfelt, and frankly transformative reaction to learning who Kaylie was is still one of my favorite moments of character growth. I'm still not finished with campaign 1 (there are so many episodes oh my god) but Sam instantly gained so much respect from me in so little time with this episode.

Man it feels so good to revisit early CR. Laura stopping everything to get Trinket, the yelp joke, Vax and Gilmore talking it out, the Kaylie reveal (all of which i forgot even were in the same episode). I wouldn't trade those little moments for nothing. Makes me much happier i started CR before TLOVM released or else i might have skipped C1 entirely.
@user-jt1js5mr3f
@user-jt1js5mr3f 8 месяцев назад
I actually started c1 BECAUSE of LoVM. CR was too intimidating for a long time, but the show eased me in. I do find it baffling how many people don’t watch it. I honestly think their most genuine D&D moments come from c1, and it’s really cool to see

"They're not going to throw the baby in a papoose and go on adventures, right?" Me: yeah, that seems unlikely, they're pretty serious "These players would never ever take a baby on an adventure with them" Me: Yeah, Matt would probably find some way to punish them for that "Especially not more than once during Campaign 2" Me: Oh yeah, that happened. Spoilers: I think it was technically twice: Once with Kiri early on, and once later with Luc on the plane of fire. In the party's defense, Kiri had no family, and they left her in the first situation that was reasonably safe as soon as possible, since the swamp town wasn't exactly friendly, and bringing Luc, Marion, and Yeza along was literally out of survival necessity.

Was just going to say that. Granted the mighty nein weren't exactly the best role models but they atleast tried and made a point of not actively putting the kid/non-combatents in danger when possible.

I had loved Scanlan before... but this scene... his monologue ... This was the moment I fell in love with him and Sam Riegel in a major way... I was exactly how I imagined Scanlan would react and it cemented his values in my mind

Matt's ability to focus on character's backstories at certain times is something that has inspired me in my own campaigns. I have recently finished one such side-quest that took quite a bit more time than I had originally expected. Once that arc was completed, I had my players offer their opinions and comments to it. If there were things that they liked, things that they didn't, and so that way they can think upon their own backstories and offer ideas. I have received quite a bit more detail from one of my players on his character that I want to focus on the next time. It's cool that Matt devised this adventure as not just a way to be a precursor to the upcoming Chroma Conclave arc, but also to help the cast remember their previous adventure and have it fresh in their minds again once the arc starts.

Imagine an alternate timeline... where Sam decided Scanlan was not a good person at heart, but in fact straight evil. Imagine if in that room, after her confession, Scanlan didn't want the secret to be let out that he had a daughter. Imagine that initiative did get rolled... and Scanlan won the fight... and hid the fact that they were related. Didn't hide her death, but claimed she was a crazy fan girl and started attacking him. Imagine how that dark secret would have changed the tone of everything ever done by Scanlan. DND is wild yo.

Ooo good episode! I can totally see how the attitudes of the group started from ‘not entirely sure why we are here’ to ‘oh shit this is probably some unfinished dangerous/profitable business we totally forgot to follow up on’. Nice!

You, sir, are truly doing the gods' work. Thank you for providing this content to the under-serviced demo of new critters. It can be so overwhelming getting into something this long-standing, much like with D&D itself. The realms need more approachable, educational content like this.

The Scanlan and Kaylie scene was so incredible and at that time I think I learned you can talk to avoid conflict (more than when they met the druid and the roc, because that felt more like a dialectic battle).

I did the 3 men and a baby thing. "baby" sister who was seriously op for a 6 yr old lol. Unfortunately my damn must have painted us into a corner the second things got interesting because... In spite of my Hardline of not killing off the child, he, put her into a f****** magical coma, and we switched campaigns after that. Given the history of switching campaigns as soon as I actually find it interesting, this is an amazing trend
