Dreaming of long, straight beautiful carrots harvested straight from your garden? You'll want to thin your seedlings! This video shows how and why to thin carrots in the garden, for big, beautiful harvests.
If carrots are scatter or broadcast sown, they will typically need to be thinned. This enables carrot roots to reach their full size potential, avoids misshapen or twisted roots and decreases competition for water and nutrients.
Thin your carrots when tops are 2-4", you can also go back and do a second thinning when tops are a bit taller (around 6").
Thin carrots by snipping greens off at the soil line with a scissors or gently pulling up the root.
Thin when soil is moist but not fully saturated.
If you've loosened the surrounding roots, gently press back into the soil with fingertips.
I like to water, feed and mulch my carrots after thinning.
To avoid or decrease the amount you have to thin, consider pelleted seeds.

Awesome information Mrs. Jenna. Thinning them out will make for awesome carrots. I take the time to only put two seeds per hole so there is not a lot of work to thin them out. Really was excited to plant my sweet candle carrots a total different way. They are doing really well. Very sad the poor video has been out for over a month and never hit 300 views. Something that has never been shown in the USA but yet went no where. Got to hate RU-vid for keeping me under the buss. Looking forward to seeing your video take off like a rocket. You always have the best advice for folks to learn. Stay safe and have a wonderful weekend!

Looking forward to watching those 'Sweet Candle' carrots progress through the season, CB! I did find out that the company that owns Sweet Candle (Sakata), has exclusive agreements only sell them in Europe, not in the States. Too bad for us, but good that you were given some to try. I can't believe that video has so few views... I really enjoyed it. Those RU-vid algorithms really ruin it sometimes.

I never have good results with any pelletized seeds, so I like to make my own seed tape. I use strips of toilet paper then mix up some flour and water as my glue to stick the seeds to the paper using chop sticks. It goes quite fast and allows you to space the seeds perfectly.

I read somewhere that if you mix mulch into soil that is still in the composting phase, that is to say not full biodegraded, that it will compete for nutrients in the soil, and from any fertilizer added. I suppose just laying the grass clippings on top of the soil, this would not be a concern. I have a large pile of wood chips I've had for a couple years now, and need to cover rows with them to, as you say, help keep the soil cool. I live in Sarasota, Fl where it's pretty much always hot anyway.

I was just thinking about how you could replant the carrots that you pull.To make a hole in the soil, you could use a pen, pencil or even the handle of one of your kitchen utensils, like a dinner knife or even the handle of a spoon would work. @GrowfullywithJenna
@GrowfullywithJenna 3 года назад
I actually have not talked about strawberry pollination in a video- since mine are outdoors, pollinating insects & wind do the work for me. Strawberries are partially self-fertile, but yields will be higher with another, more efficient method of transferring pollen. A brief primer on strawberry pollination can be viewed here: entomology.ces.ncsu.edu/small-fruit-insect-biology-management/strawberry-pollination-basics/ For hand pollination, a small, soft-bristled paintbrush may be preferable to the Q-tip as it picks up & distributes pollen very effectively.
