Denzel is one of those I'll watch in ANYTHING. He's such a great actor. His son is gonna be something, too. Ethan Hawke didn't get a lot of credit for Training Day, but he was also incredible.

'Training Day' is a movie that made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable and nostalgic at the same time, first time I saw it. Im from "East of the River"/Wash-DC...born/raised. And after birth-parents separated, my old man went to NYC..and me and my Mom moved into the city of DC, from suburban MD, near Andrews AFB. About a yr after that move she met the guy who eventually became my stepdad. And he was LITERALLY a man of the streets. He had a legit job at the Smithsonian Instit....but the job that made him so much money, he was able to buy a 7 bedroom house on the waterfront in Annapolis with the vintage Silver Shadow-RR in the 4 car garage, was dope dealing. and most weekends, he had me with him while he was 'handling his business'. So, I saw it all. And DC was a MUCH different city in those times..the 70s. Before crack became an epidemic, it was simply called "base" (short for freebase)..and my stepfather sold it..along with just about any and every other kind of drug you can name. But as it relates to this film, the memory that stood out the most to me, were the relationships he had with rogue cops. The apartment he dealt drugs from, was a first floor apt, right next to the entrance. And the low-life cops were so bold and crazy in those days, they would LITERALLY pull up in front of our building, and walk boldly in and out, like it was just second nature. That wouldnt mean anything to anyone, except for the fact that MANY times they were in uniform..as well as doing the undercover thing. Bottom line, they were picking up drugs from my stepdad, to sell ON THEIR OWN (and those cops were largely the undercover cops like Alonso)...and they were also SELLING their protection, for a price. and whenever he knew they were coming to our place to get money from him, he would tell me and my brother, to leave the apt. My Mom, for the longest time, had no idea what he was up to. She didnt even know he kept the apt, after he bought the bigger home on the shore. She just thought when me and my brother were in the city with my stepfather, we were spending time with relatives or what have you. Suffice it to say, I saw cops JUST LIKE "Alonso"..and to be perfectly honest?...they tended to be MEANER than Alonso...and more brutal. I think he did an awesome job of portraying that kind of cop...but the only thing Denzel couldnt do as well as them, was BEING THEM. They had more to lose, in several ways. So, there were FAR BRUTAL consequences that they dished out, when it involved the street people they mixed with on a daily basis. I saw a cop kill a man with a hammer, in the alley next to our apt building. And later on that evening when I asked my stepfather why he died, he said "because he was dishonest with the people that mattered". Thats how those guys lived. My stepfather is still alive and retired....never went to prison...and is living in Florida. My Mom left him, after she caught him dealing drugs from that same apt, 2 yrs after the cop killed that guy. And the thing that stuck out about her catching him, was the gun she put to his head, as she explained what she should do to him, regarding putting me and my brother in harm's way all those yrs. 'Training Day' is a microcosm of that lifestyle that many of us out here, lived or knew of, in an intimate way.

For them to wear the uniforms is quite telling of the level of widespread corruption and how commonplace and accepted it had to have been in the department at the time. I am no longer suprised the more I read. Thanks. Stay safe.

Other than Ethan, I've always thought that Dicaprio and Denzel would've been a good fit at that particular time. That was in 2001, just after "Titanic" and "The Beach" for Dicaprio and both of them would've probably been a great fit, Denzel as a seasoned cop and Leo as a naive yet capable rookie. Those Dicaprio eyes, just like with Ethan, always had that sense of danger in them so that casting would have probably worked out well also. Duel of stars in a way.

Antoine Fuqua is creating a great cinematic legacy. His movies and choices for who are in them is just incredible. "Training Day" was magnificent but a tough watch for me. Denzel's Oscar winning portrayal of "Alonzo" was so vibrant and tangible. Fuqua was also dead on about the "naive" personality of "Jake" played brilliantly by Ethan Hawke. They were both perfect for the lead roles. Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg added the finishing touch to a cinematic classic.

I was looking for this comment. And not because I agree, but because it’s something EVERYONE keeps saying: “give him their flowers” 😂 Y’all hear a catchy phrase or word and use it till the wheels falls off. No original thought or comments. Just birds repeating words.

@fellowdanbarber3323 When an ignoramus uses an incorrect term such as "y'all" that person is immediately disqualified from scrutinising what another person writes. E for effort!

Rich credits Terry Crews as being a cameo when he was an extra at the time but yet he skips over the other major cameo which was Macy Gray.

Well, Ethan Hawke already played that role in Brooklyn's Finest, which was also directed by Fuqua, so I think that was his way of broadening his acting chops and playing the antithesis of a young naive cop.
