How are immersion oils for microscopy different? 

Very comprehensive. For some reason I find that companies are very secretive about the chemical composition of their synthetic oils. I believe that many modern oils are based on certain epoxies. I have also read a paper about the use of methyl salicylate as an alternative but never tried it. One thing to mention about leaving oil on the objective is that if you use other objectives then the oil immersion one will eventually find its way to being at a steep angle in the turret so the oil can drip into the spring mechanism if left uncleaned and over time cause the retraction feature to cease up which can make focussing a problem and also cause issues with potentially damaging the specimen if you try to rack the focus too far down while trying to get in focus. For those interested in more technical aspects of oil immersion and numerical aperture of illumination I have published a recent paper in the journal of microscopy related to that subject. To test the resolution of microscopic objectives and oil immersion you should use an abbe testplate or the scales of maniola jurtinea bzw epinephele janira, that is good microscopers standard.

you should observe the super dried up solid oil with the microscope and some non dried oil haha wonder if youd see the liquid stuff start to dissolve the solid XD
