It’s no secret, especially to fans of my channel, that European royal families have been intermarrying for centuries. All 10 of these modern monarchs are related to each other. There are 4 sets of first cousins, meaning they share two grandparents.
Today we’ll take a look at the family trees which connect each of the 10 modern monarchs of Europe and rank them from least to most closely related to the other 9. Each monarch will be scored by what degree of cousin they are from each of the others. First cousins get 1 point, second 2 points third 3 and so on. The lower the score the more closely related they are:
King Philippe of Belgium
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark
King Willem-Alexander The Netherlands
King Harald V of Norway
King Felipe VI of Spain
King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden
King Charles III of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Realms
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg
Sovereign Prince Hans-Adam II of Liechtenstein
Sovereign Prince Albert II of Monaco

The late Prince Philip must be laughing in his grave now that his son is King. When he married the then Princess Elizabeth, all those snotty British courtiers looked down their noses at him because he wasn't rich and they saw him as "foreign" even though he was actually far more royal than his wife (through both his parents, with descent from Queen Victoria, Christian IX and one of the Russian Czars).

I believe they were informed who their relations were starting at a young age. The King of Sweden, for example, is only 2 years older than the King of the United Kingdom. Both were acquainted at an early age and were playmates during their youth. Carl XVI Gustaf’s step-grandmother Louise was great aunt to Charles III, being the younger sister of Charles’ grandmother Princess Andrew (Alice) of Greece and Denmark.

Small mistakes... Louis-Philippe was indeed the last king France had, but not the last monarch, since the president elected shortly after his fall in 1848, Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte, became emperor Napoleon III in 1852. Around 15:00, the tree shows Leopold II of Belgium as Albert I's father. They were uncle and nephew. Albert's father was Philip, count of Flanders, while his mother was Mary of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen... which connects the Belgian branch to the whole Baden branch (and not to the Habsburg-Lorraine branch, which was Leopold II wife's, Maria-Henrietta.)

Kinda crazy how these people are running countries, or representing them internationally, basically because their 50x great grandparent was in charge of a prosperous cave or village when we were inventing clothes and basic tools. There's a book about it, called "Inequality", and explains how we know a lot about ancient ancestors through DNA.

Great video! One problem though, you have Albert I of Belgium as son of Leopold II and Queen Marie, when he was actually the son of Prince Phillipe and Princess Marie. You wouldn't have to change much though because you gave Queen Marie the same parents as Princess Marie had in real life, so you would just have to replace Leopold II with Prince Philipe and replace Queen Marie with Princess Marie.

Following on this look at how they're related and interact: 1. There are many videos of royals coming to visit the Queen. Foreign kings and queens kiss her, but lesser titled royals all now/curtsey first, regardless of age. In one video Princess Anne is there with the Queen, and she would curtsey to a younger foreign Queen but not a foreign prince. 2. When Prince Philip died, the Spanish royals sent a message that they were saddened by the death of "Uncle Philip", and I thought it was interesting they specifically called him "uncle". 3. In a video from Monaco, a palace historian showed the formal letter from Queen Elizabeth to Prince Albert that the new British ambassador presented for his first meeting of introduction. The Queen starts the letter "Dear cousin, please accept my new ambassador...". The historian said "they all use this informal "cousin" term in writing, but maybe in this case she was being accurate!
@MitjaC
@MitjaC Год назад
Regarding the video of Princess Anne, she curtsied to a foreign king/queen because in theory, they outrank her. She wouldn’t have to curtsey to a prince who has the same title as her. This also explains why everybody except foreign monarchs bowed in front of Queen Elizabeth; it’s all about their rank and titles.
@syria0110
@syria0110 Год назад
It's likely the Spanish royals, specifically Felipe, referred to Prince Philip as "uncle" rather than cousin because of the age difference between them. I've noticed it being common in families from different cultures to refer to their older cousins as "aunt" or "uncle". I actually had a friend who called her mom's first cousin (her cousin as well) as her aunt

A little correction at 15:01. France in fact did have another monarchy known as the Second French Empire under the Napoleonic house. They gained Savoy and Nice during this period from the Sardinians. However, they lost Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire after their defeat in the Franco-Prussian War which also resulted in the dissolution of the Second Empire. Since then, France has always been a republic.

The most recent common ancestor of all European monarchs currently still reigning has become Ludwig IX, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife Karoline von Pfalz-Zweibrücken since the accession of His Majesty King Charles III whose mother Elizabeth II had been the only European reigning monarch not descended from Landgrave Ludwig IX and Landgravine Karoline, who was known as the Große Landgräfin
