The band, U2, is 46 years old. 1976-2022. BOY was their first major album in 1980 with the big hit, I Will Follow. Bono was 44 years old in 2004. He is now 62 years old in 2022.

U2’s last big mega hit. Easily in the top 10 most popular u2 songs. Still gets played on the radio now. Great review. Released during U2’s 3rd massive peak. I got into the band in 2000 and this album and song was huge. U2 were the first act to release their whole back catalogue to iTunes. They had their own branded iPod along with the vertigo iPod tv advert. Massive song Pretty sure you reacted to sometimes you can’t make it on your own. Which was on the same record. Keep it going with u2 city of blinding lights again off how to dismantle an atomic bomb

I love U2, but have a few friends that can't stand them lol... With that said, there is one song that they all have in their library: Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me! It's a bit different than what most expect from the band's singles, but it's a killer tune... Would love to see your reaction to it!

Fyi, if you ever do end up doing a reaction, I suggest the official music video: it's one of the few U2 songs I don't think they were able to quite nail live... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Cms4jdFsgBQ.html

Ok. So I love your reactions and analysis of U2 songs. But please, PLEASE, you have to react to them live. The videos are nothing. This is the greatest live band to ever walk the earth. You talk about Bono’s magnetism and charisma, but you haven’t experienced it if you don’t see them in a live performance. I beg you to react to Bullet the Blue Sky, and Love is Blindness from ZooTv Sydney. Or AllI want is You/Where the Streets Have No Name (yes this would be a two song reaction) from Slane Castle. Or Kite from Slane, Until The End of The World from ZooTv. You truly don’t know what you’re in for. Your current perception of Bono and that certain special thing about him is really only revealed in the live setting. Even for a sort of fun song like Vertigo, check out Elevation live from Boston. Love the channel and reactions. Keep it up!!

Awesome suggestions for live U2! Yes, they're mesmerizing live. Well, he is. Can't take your eyes off of him. His fist live is going to be Bad from Live Aid. I know - not the best example - it's because of the impact that performance had on the world that I requested it, but plan to request more lives like from Red Rocks, Slane, ZooTV, etc. I think Love Is Blindness from ZooTV is unmatched in amazingness. 😍

I was always amazed of Bono’s energy on stage. At the Songs of Innocence tour and Songs of Experience tour they had no front band, it was just them playing music for 3 hours. They’re masters of what they’re doing and even so they get older, they’re music is growing with them. Im not sure how long they will keep it up, but they age great as a rock band and simply impressed me with each album and tour more and more
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 2 года назад
Their first album was Boy in 1980 and first hit was on that album, called I Will Follow. They were all 18 - 20 at the time (but honestly looked about 12 LOL!), so yes, they were early-mid 40s here. You should hear/see that one, and compare to Vertigo as it's also a rock number. Be interesting to see the difference 24 years made with them. Yeah, this one is definitely more rock style. They had several like that. The rest mainly more alternative with some pop/rock. Overall, they were an arena rock band more than anything, but they did have many differing sounds. All four of them wrote this and it seems to be about how one can love the feelings of certain things (like fame and popularity), but it still leaves an unsettling feeling or one of being trapped. The middle part exemplifies this I think, the short bit where it says 'all of this can be yours' and 'just give me what I want and no one gets hurt'. My sense is that is about the heady feelings getting cut short by demands of the music and entertainment industries, maybe even of the band themselves. You wondered about the first verse. Check it out. I think it is discussing how what you feel from fame and popularity is very different from what you think about it. The jungle is your head, can't rule your heart A feeling's so much stronger than a thought Your eyes are wide and though your soul, it can't be bought Your mind can wander the fame is enticing, and although your soul can't be bought, your mind can be tempted to go there.... What you say about how they've aged so well, yes, they reinvented themselves over and over again. They are also more like family than most bands having met and been together since high school. All bands have rocky periods, and they were no exception. One came from them having problems. The singer and guitarist here are always noticed, but Larry and Adam (drummer and bassist) are excellent musicians too. The video is a visual of what vertigo feels like. I think your thoughts about revisiting some songs is a great idea! Heads up - the next one I requested: Mysterious Ways is open to interpretation as to its meaning. In fact, the various band members, when asked the meaning, say different things and at different times, so it's anyone's guess! Geez, this is long enough. I'm glad to see you're enjoying seeing their different sides and more of their catalog. So much more to come and it's all intriguing in many ways! You know I love your reactions.

You have to react to U2 Until the End of the World its alot darker rock song and it has an epic guitar solo
@lauraallen55
@lauraallen55 2 года назад
Right it does have that solo, which is a very rare occurrence with them. I'm trying to think of the one where a string broke on his guitar but he kept playing anyway (because he was raging internally about his divorce).

@@lauraallen55 That's Love is Blindness, but as far as I know that take never made it to the album...Edge walked back into the control room, having played his heart out and Danny Lanois looked at edge and said..'that's not it.' or something like that. What did make to the album was Larry dropping a drumstick on Ultra Violet. If I remember the stories correctly. Hahaha.

I loved U2 in the 80’s and 90’s. IMO this was their peak. Don’t get me wrong they had still someone amazing songs but just not at that same level as before. Achtung baby was crazy. Completely reinvented themselves from the 80’s which so many other bands could not do but they were IMO better. Even the Pop album as they were pushing the boundaries of what people could accept. Many U2 fans from the 80’s just didn’t get it as it was just so far ahead of it’s time. Experimental music which worked. U2 even came out with an album during their ZOOTV tour. Just an amazing time. Can I make a request. The following is just so haunting for the people Bono met and for the families involved. Very special especially live. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VE6GfzQJKvc.html

The reason (some) bands change their sound is not only because they want to reinvent themselves, but also because times are changing and they want to attract new fans of a younger generation. At least that's what I think.

Good reaction:) I've always seen this as a song about temptation. It's set in a club that Bono obviously feels uncomfortable and perhaps tempted in. The girl in the song wearing the cross reminds him of his faith. One allusion in this song that is key to getting it is the allusion to the temptation of Christ in the desert where the devil takes him up to the pinnacle (hence Vertigo..which is a dizziness experienced at heights) where he tells Jesus that "all of the kingdom that the devil is showing him could be his if Jesus will worship him. Basically, the "just give me what I want(worship and giving in to the.temptation) and no one gets hurt" is a lie and the drop in pitch that sounds darker at the end of the line emphasizes the lie. The "bullets rip the sky contrasts with the vapidness of the club setting and suggests that giving in to the temptation to only pursue pleasure is a part of the violence of humankind itself and that all selfishness has consequences...

To me U2 ipod commercial was the better version for this song. There was an U2 pod (black with a red click wheel). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nljs4kzpebU.html I think it was the first iPod Commercial in this style. The counting in the beginning is 1, 2,3,14 because it was the 14th album. U2 have been maybe the biggest band in the world between 1987 and 1997 (Joshua tree, Rattle&Hum, Achtung Baby, Zooropa, Pop) not really a 80ties band the Captain is the Edge (equipment in this song: Telecaster guitar, Line6DM4, Fender Deluxe amp modiefied with alnico blue bulldog speaker) It was impressive to be live in Spain in Barcelona at Camp Nou stadium shouting this song with spanish parts.

I've mentioned this before, Every Breaking Wave is a fantastic song but the video is very distracting, I'd suggest the album cut. The Miracle of Joey Ramone is a must hear, as is Iris (Hold Me Close). California (There is No End to Love) sounds reminiscent of New Years Day, another must hear. Oh, and Night and Day, from the Cole Porter tribute album is a dance floor banger, really great!

You mentioned that Bono's voice sounds different here. You've only heard one example of his voice when really young and that was in Pride. There are so many from that time period where his voice was at its - I want to say strongest maybe(?) Songs from War and Joshua Tree and everything up to then his voice is very powerful, even into Achtung Baby and others from the 90s. It did thin out some in the 00s but still sounds great today in fact based on videos I've seen from up through 2018 or so. They have a big project for next year in Vegas. I'm definitely planning a trip there! It's not much more of a desert than where I live anyway lol and it's only 7 hours and 6 minutes from me. Got it already all figured out. 🤣 Regarding the count going to 3 then jumping to 14: there are a lot of theories. One is they had 14 albums, one is he counted all the way, but it was too long so got cut out and 14 left in, and Bono losing his mom at 14. With them, meanings are oftentimes left to the imaginations of the listeners. :) They started in 1980 when they were 17-19. Larry (drummer) was just 17 when their first album and single/hit came out, Edge, Bono were 18 and Adam was 19. So, they were going for even longer here and still coming up with fresh ideas. They were such kids really when they started out. Bono got married his HS sweetheart and married her the week he joined U2. Very hard working band and continued to be for 4 decades. Okay I'll stop lol. I just have such great admiration for them as musicians and as humans.

One of their more straightforward songs as far as meaning, and nothing deep or spiritual etc. It's about exactly what it sounds like - being in a bar, drinking lol!
