Hi, it’s Mark Bossert from Top Local Lead Generation. We’re here with Mr. Bernie Pawlik, he’s the owner of Pawlik Automotive, it's been voted twelve times as the best Auto Service & Auto Repair place in Vancouver by his customers; pretty amazing strategy, pretty amazing results, pretty amazing mechanic, quite honestly and how are you doing this morning Bernie?
Bernie: Doing really well, just want to add to that we just won our fifth Air Care Quality Care Award not that matter so much anymore since air care’s gone in a couple weeks but it’s nice having that recognition for quality repairs that we've done in the past, just something to add to our list,
Mark: Absolutely. Well as I think it's just a recognition of the quality of service that you guys offer and are so passionate about.
Bernie: Absolutely and I will say that my name’s on the certificate, but it’s my team in the back that does most of the work these days so I have to give them the credit, I feel a little guilty my name’s on it but, anyways we’re all a team so it’s good.
Mark: Awesome. So we’re going to talk about Volvo’s. Volvo’s are you know, they’ve got this big Swedish rap, there’re the big strapping blond guy that says we’re durable, we’re super safe; do they really live up to those kind of claims?
Bernie: Yes, well I’ve worked on Volvo’s for many years in our shop. We work on lots of them, we’ve worked on them since the boxy cars in the past to the new sleek round look that Volvo has. Durability has always been a strong point with Volvo’s but you know like any other car you have to maintain it to make sure it stays durable so they don’t just last on their own. It’s a commitment of the owner as well as the build of the car. Interestingly enough that the vehicle with the most mileage record, most driven record is a Volvo and I was just looking at it this morning, the owner’s got over three million miles on this vehicle. I think it’s a 1965 p 1800 model which is kind of a cool sporty car. Three million miles, apparently drives 85 to a hundred miles a year, so this guy loves driving and obviously he loves the car and he takes care of it so it shows you what you can do if you take care of your car.
As far as safety, the Volvo has always had a reputation for safety, they’ve been an innovator in a lot of safety features, I think the 3 point seat belt, shoulder belt which we all take for granted was a Volvo innovation. That being said vehicle safety standards are really high these days so I don’t know if Volvo really has that edge that they used to but they certainly still build safe cars.
Mark: So how are they to work on?
Bernie: Volvo’s have always been a bit unique, in over the past decades, couple decades they’ve become even more complex. Up until the early nineteen nineties all Volvos were rear wheel drive, then they went to the 850 model and that was a front wheel drive and they basically switched over to front wheel drive and then followed with all-wheel drive which is easy to add onto a front wheel drive model. So they’ve gone with that configuration, so they’re way more complex to fix and a few more things tend to go wrong with them because of that. We made all the investments in equipment to fix them and there are some unique pieces of equipment that are needed. We made all the investment so we can service all the newest of Volvo’s.
The older rear wheel drive model Volvo’s were really reliable but they did require frequent service. Things like the timing belts only lasted you less than a hundred thousand kilometers, the drive belts would get noisy and creaky. They had some strange ways of mounting some of the accessories and the bushings would wear out. Also the 140 and 240 series Volvo’s had a real interesting brake design, really safe; what they did they had a four piston brake caliper instead of having one brake line to each caliper they actually split the caliper in half, the brake system was split so if you were to blow a brake line on one of these Volvos which didn’t happen very often but if you did you’d still have half of both your front brakes and one rear brake operating which is outstanding. Actually I owned a Volvo once where that happened and they almost brake as well with half the brake system as it did on the whole brake system so it was pretty awesome. Unfortunately it costs a lot more money to fix that than your average brake system but again there’s the safety aspect.
Volvo dropped the system when they introduced the 740 models; I guess they felt, they didn’t think it was necessary.

@Frankly Speaking ; I have one as well. My wife’s car actually but MY job as the car guy to maintain her. We just passed 150K after 15 years. She loves the car and we raised two girls cruising around in our XC70 (2004). I’m actually scared to add up how much money we have put into this car. The last bill was a doozy. $5K...ouch!!! The whole rack & pinion steering system went. I put on cross drilled and slotted disc brakes all around with ceramic pads. No this was not overindulgence. Amazon has some great pricing on high performance brake kits. We broke the upper motor mount about 3 times. McPherson struts are not cheap for this car. I am not taking into consideration routine maintenance like the aforementioned brakes but actual mechanical failure that should not happen. Like the front passenger side window falling into the door and then the power window mechanism just eating it for lunch. That happened at least twice at a cost of $600.00 each time. We have been thru a few Volvo radios....A bunch of super expensive leaky seals that needed to be replaced. Here is the thing people: Volvo’s might require you to sell one of your kidneys in order to keep your lovely Swede on the road. I’m $15-$20K into this car for repairs over the last 15 years not counting routine maintenance once again.

My advice is check your fluid levels, pipes and hoses regularly. My C30 has been great but when a coolant hose junction broke down and leaked all the coolant out and I overheated and blew the head gasket within minutes, what I came to find is that these are a pain in the ass to work on and expensive. Although the coolant hose junction cost only $20, the failure of this component costed me Thousands. Running great now, but not the same.

One must know the vulnerabilities of their car. The lower radiator hose is one such vulnerability on the P1 chassis, the other is the serpentine belt tensioner. If it fails and shreds a belt, it often gets stuck in the timing belt - then it gets really bad, really fast!

On the reliability of the car, these are expensive to run past the 100k miles mark simply because it's an european. Several things go bad, a/c clutch and pulley, PCV system, front spring seats, struts and shocks get stiff, transmissions on 2001-2002, cabin water ingress in several places (the top of the carpet looks dry but there is water underneath), control arms, cabin blower, instrument panel, engine mounts, water leaking into the CEM, slave cylinder on the manual transmission, AWD system up to 2006, some ABS unit failures. On the good side, trouble free engine except for the PCV system (most sensors last forever, even the ignition coils last forever), great cooling system, good fuel system, good 5 speed automatic transmission when the fluid is replaced, great cabin electrics, long lasting exhaust (the brackets are weak), extremely rust resistant. So basically a great car for the self mechanic, easy to work on it and tons of used parts available on Ebay. New replacement parts should only be bought on Sachs, Lemforder and Gates parts, nothing else! All these brands are sold online at Ipd, Fcp and Eeuroparts. Don't buy Meyle, Febi or ProPartsSweden! The water pump needs not replaced with the first timing belt. More reliable than Bmw and Audi in the long term. And if you're thinking buying this used and have the Volvo dealer repair the car, you are better getting a bicycle.
@jerrybijleveld9955
@jerrybijleveld9955 7 лет назад
what say about shocks is not true to they do not get stiffer, only softer because of a worn seal
@StackBundle
@StackBundle 6 лет назад
As long as you stay 2000 and prior it's dirt cheap. When Ford got involved it was all downhill from there. 2000 and prior aren't really expensive when you consider most parts don't go out until 150-200k and the aftermarket parts last even longer. Struts and spring seats aren't THAT expensive... Neither is the ac. Pcv system needing serviced is completely dependant on the type driving you do.

Best car ever. Why would it be more expensive to repair because it is European? Does not break down like US cars often do. Light on fuel. No oil leaks. Takes 5 minutes to change lightbulbs. This guy has no idea what he is talking about.
@richardbostan4286
@richardbostan4286 6 лет назад
You are the one who doesn't know what he is talking about. In North America, European cars are BOTH more unreliable and more expensive to fix than American/Asian cars. The European market is different from what I hear. Technical specs vary by market, as does the price of replacement parts and cost of servicing. When I read things like Mercedes E-Class cars being used as taxis in Germany it simply boggles my mind. No taxi company in North America could afford to use such cars. Where I live (near Vancouver, Canada) virtually every taxi is a Toyota.
@Peppermint1
@Peppermint1 5 лет назад
Each car maker - American, Asian or European has it's strong and weak points. However, European cars in the 'near luxury' segment are more expensive to repair for a few reasons: one is that several parts are made in Europe by european workers which cost more to pay. Another reason is the way these European cars (Mercedes, Audi, Bmw, Volvo, etc) are being marketed: these car makers choose to sell their new cars with less profit, and they make the more profit on servicing and parts replacement. Their parts are very overpriced when you buy them from the main dealer. You can buy the same part from the actual company that makes them (Sachs, Bosch, Lemforder, etc) and a much cheaper price - same part with the Volvo or Bmw name scratched off. Oh, and by the way, not bashing but on 2005 and up S60 it takes more like 30 min to change a headlight bulb, not to mention the amount of skin and blood - otherwise it's not that hard to service a Volvo

Best to buy a volvo if you can do it yourself or have a local specialist. Otherwise you're just throwing money away. I have two and I love them but the dealership is a huge scam. I've told them so, given them comparative prices with the exact same job a few times, and they really don't care at all.

To be honest, it's not worth buying a car over 200 000 or so kms. Personally I'd aim for 100 000 or so, depending on your budget. Reason being is that the more kms, the more you'll have to spend on maintenance.

Stelion, you are an idiot. Honda Civic has been the biggest selling car in Canada for 20 consecutive years and it is so far ahead in sales in 2018 it will soon be 21 years. Toyotas are also one of the biggest Canadian sellers. Both Hondas and Toyotas last hundreds of thousands of miles here. European cars fall apart here long before Japanese and American cars.

Hahaha! Exactly how a blustering fool called out on his stupidity would be expected to react. And you obviously DON'T know about Honda and Toyota sales in Canada if you think they can't "last" past 50,000 miles in Canada. Or do you suppose Canadians are really keen to buy cars that only last 50,000 miles? Elementary logic, dear boy. And try to learn English above the level of a five-year-old if you are going to try to write on an English-language message board.

I have sold Volvos for 25 years, Volvo made quality cars until they went to front wheel drive and after ford bought them they suck, old 2.3 4 cyl rear wheel drive Volvos are the good ones, EZ to service cheap to service, stay away from Volvos that are front wheel drive or all wheel drive At least a old 2.3 engine is non interferance, engine just replace 12.00 belt and go again, when the new one breaks timing belt it does engine damage.,best Volvos are 240, 740 , 940, mr driver 240 has 730k miles I've been abusing it for years, general cheap maintenance castrol oil changes, good cars

+Aaron Bradley Parts are quite cheap, they are very simple to wrench on. My 1990 740 wagon has nearly 400K miles, I paid $500 for it 9 yrs ago. Still my daily driver. Timing belt cost me $18, takes 3 hrs for me to swap out. Water pump $50, ball joints $28 each. Fuel pump $60. The newer fwd models are bit awkward to wrench but still great cars.

American indulgence? You mean like being able to pass a 60 foot semi on a 2 lane highway without testing the front impact survivability of your car? Or maybe the crazy indulgent American notion a timing belt should last more than 100k miles along with the six to ten electrical items that always crap out on a Volvo well before 80k miles. Truth be told Americans are starting to follow suit and make disposable cars too so I guess it's up to the Japanese, BUT power is not indulgent. Especially considering that 99% of all new cars are de-tuned to a pitiful point.
@soylentgreen2065

awful to work on yourself and expensive. they last forever? no shit, if you keep repairing the stuff that goes bad. i own an s60 and s80 and they are terrible to work on. just try to replace the serpentine belt on the s80. and what does aftermarket AC compressor cost? $400 and up for a new one. buy japanese if you are looking for reliable. buy volvo if money is no issue when you get tired of paying people to fix your shitty volvo and need to buy a GOOD car.
