In my opinion, the real curse was Maradona himself. There can't be two kings at the same time. So it is just after Diego's departure, the curse was lifted from the next king Leo. Note that Lionel Messi's Argentina won every single trophies after the death of Maradona.

There are so many football-related curses in international stages other than the so-called "Champions Curse", like: 1.England: They didn't win again after 1966 because of third goal vs West Germany in that final. Later on, they even added penalties as their enemy because they failed to win a single knockout game through penalty shootout. 2.Mexico: After being disqualified for 1990 World Cup by fielding an overage players in the youth tournament, they didn't progress beyond the first knockout stage (fifth game). 3.Brazil: They failed to beat European teams in the knockout stage after 2002 win. 3.Japan: They failed to reach the quarterfinals in 4 occasions. Not to mention, a team that ended Japan's World Cup hope will finish third at the end of tournament (except Paraguay). 4.Netherlands: They reached 3 World Cup Finals, but always ended in defeat. 5.Scotland: They participated in 8 World Cups and 3 Euros, but are still yet to play in the knockouts. 6.Iran: Despite being ranked first in Asian football, their international performance was bad because many source said there were numerous violences against Islamic government. In World Cup, they are still yet to play in the knockout stages. The first World Cup for Iran was even happened a year before the big revolution for the country. 7.Korea Republic: Their last major silverware came in 1960, when they won the Asian Cup. Later on, they were cursed because players only received a fake gold medals. Even though the authorities give the real gold medals to all surviving members of 1960 winning team, they didn't win the Asian Cup again despite having a world class players like Park Ji-sung and Son Heung-min. Also, the Women's World Cup had its own curse where the hosts will always crashed out in the quarterfinals, with USWNT being notable exceptions because they actually won it in 1999 and finished third in 2003. Germany's defeat to Japan in 2011 was such a humiliation because they were also the defending champions and seeking for third win in a row at that time. Australia and New Zealand, the co-hosts of this year's WWC, might fell to this curse if they didn't get prepared well.

My interpretation is that, whenever Argentina played, or rather Messi played he seemed lonely. He seemed like an outcast. I remember him taking the ball to the dbox but failing to find any player nearby to finish. But this new team felt different. It's almost as if everyone was supporting Messi. Alvarez, Acuna, Martinez, Otamendi, Enzo, and many others always surrounded Messi. So he can bounce off them or draw defenders and let them finish. This Argentina felt like a team. Messi felt like he belonged among them. The reason is pretty simple actually. Nearly all of them idolized Messi. From admiring to playing with him. Even Scaloni played with Messi at one point. So the reason why Argentina broke the curse is simple, this team was built around Messi.
