If people are interested in becoming Army officers, but can't sit thru an 18 min video, they may need to rethink their future plans. I found this information very helpful.
I made it to the end. This video sort of helped. I was interested in Enlisting and doing Green to Gold, however, you said that I would have to go active duty, which is not my preference. I already have my bachelor's degree and I plan on enlisting as a 35 P. During college, I studied a critical skill language, Mandarin. I would like to be a reserve M.I. officer. Given my education and hypothetical military experience how should I go about doing that?
44lolin there are NG recruiters who can help you. You’ll have to go to OCS which is several months long, but you’ll come out a US Army Officer in the National Guard
Kenneth Bass How about if I have an associate degree nd trying to get them Pay for may tuition so I can get my bachelor, but I want to go thru the National Guard route; is it thru ROTC or OCS that I have to go thru? I thought they were the same thing.
Gerand Alcantara ROTC and OCS will GET you to the same thing (being a commissioned officer) but they are not the same thing. My recommendation would be to go talk to a Guard recruiter about a GRFD. This is a scholarship through the national guard, that will require you to complete Army ROTC at a University, and in return not only will they pay for your school, but the scholarship is one of the BEST scholarships you can get in a ROTC program. The guys I was with in rotc who had GRFD’s made bank while going to school, no need to get a job while going to school or anything. You will be required to go to a guard unit upon graduation as an officer.
I'm a 57 year old Brit with no direct interest or relevance to the military in the UK let alone USA and yet I'm addicted to these videos. Really very interesting, thanks Matt.
Just talked to my ROTC enrollment officer yesterday, I’m so glad to watch your videos and get as much info as I can i’m excited but nervous for the change because I know i’m setting myself up for the rest of my life. The vids are awesome !
Made it to the end, thank you sir for such an informative talk on ROTC. I’m gonna be in ROTC mostly due to your videos, I was gonna go OCS but I prefer ROTC
Just how competitive is it for someone to achieve active duty though? Percentage wise? I start freshman year soon and I want active duty but I want to know what I’m gonna be dealing with competition wise.
hey thanks for this! I'm a junior undergrad thinking about joining in spring and could not really the whole comprehend the process with my cadre. Helped a lot and love the long vids tbh.
I got really excited and wrote a comment of elation before I finished the video. I was hoping for one that talked about OCS :/ I graduated several years ago and plan to go to law school next. (don’t think they have rotc?) My question is that I’m about to enlist as an intel analyst. Lots of people are trying to discourage me from going that route since I have a degree but I want to be an MI officer and have heard that if you have a intel analyst mos that when you go through OCS you are likely to get that MI officer versus someone who just goes straight to ocs. I go to basic in October, ait in February then will submit my packet for ocs school feb of 2020. My question is... is that a good plan or should I just try to go straight to ocs and skip the e4 route before? Also going Army National Guard if that is relevant. Still love all of your videos Matt! You have helped me prepare for so much! First generation military here so I need all the help I can get lol
Hi! I want to be an MI officer also, I'm going to OCS in October... Focus on you MAIN GOAL. Is that to be an MI officer? Then going the enlisted route may not be the best option. It's very unlikely that you get your commander's approval for OCS by being just one year in your unit. As Matt has explained several times your chances to get the branch of your choice is based on the OML, not your previous MOS. Being said that, you said you are going as a RESERVE, so if you're applying to OCS a slot for your preferred brand should be GUARANTEED in your contract. Anyway it's just my opinion, hope this helps.
I’m trying to find more information on BRADSO and I’m finding nothing. Could you help elaborate on the process? I want a specific branch and im willing to put in the extra years to get that branch pick.
Hello Matt. I'm studying up for my ASVAB test since I have been out of school for 10 years. Your videos have been helping me greatly for what to expect from Basic. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos! Here I come Army! Nothing is going to hold me back!
Would I be able to be an officer or warrant officer if I come right out of college with a bachelors degree? Or would I have a tougher time because I’m not in rotc?
I started watching your videos after I graduated from a ChalleNGe Academy and wanted to get some info before I enlisted. Turns out, I have several medical issues that prevent me from joining lol! Thanks for making awesome videos, dude
Made it to the end and had a quick question if you can help. I'm 25 going to community college and I want to join an ROTC program when I transfer to a University. Would that be possible or how would that work? Sorry for the long questions lol anything helps.
Kevin Chapman so in reference to what he was saying, if I go to a Univ. to get my bachelor nd I enroll to ROTC, will they help me even thou is not guarantee to get an scholarship to pay for my tuition? Also can it make a difference if I want to go as a National Guard Instead of Active duty?
No, it's not. Upon commissioning, all 2nd Lieutenants in the USMC have to go to TBS (The Basic School) in Quantico, VA. All 2nd Lts have to go regardless if they commissioned from OCS, NROTC, or Annapolis. TBS is around 6 months and it's where they teach you the basics of how to be a platoon leader in the USMC and at some point, you'll get the ability to rank all the different officer MOS in order of what you think is the best job for you. Off the top of my head, I think there are 17. Most will get something within their top 5 and it's usually based off of performance at TBS with a little bit of luck.
Sir, I'm currently in ROTC. When I become an Officer, how would I go about being specifically assigned to a certain Unit or Battalion? I want to be a Cavalry Officer but I'm not sure how I would be able to work with the 19Ds specifically.
Education eligibility question : Can a US citizen with a BS degree from outside the U.S meets the education requirement to join the OCS (the degree is already been evaluated BY NACES and recommended U.S.equivalency to BS from a regionally -accredited institution of higher education ) Thank you
After I explained this to my dad he summed it up pretty well "So the OML is basically the Army's version of the Sorting Hat and each of the branches are the Houses." Couldn't have said it better myself :D
How did you pick your MOS? I am only a MS1 but want to get a ggod idea of what want to do. Do you know of any good websites or anything that give a good description of what you will be doing as an officer in each job?
Made it to the end! Thanks for the video! I have a question about getting a medical mos through rotc. Would it be advised to do active duty or reserves to get a medical mos? after rotc would it still be possible to get into medical school? How will this affect me getting into a medical mos?
I’m confused that do the officers need to sign the contract for their service or just be an officer in the Army all the time? If I want to go to the ROTC does it matter I’m a junior in the college?
Hey Matt I have a question for ya my buddy has been in the army for 3 years and he was telling about how one day he lost his voice and was getting mad fun of for it but what would happen if you lost your voice at BC with your drill instructor
I've talked about that in live streams and stuff but you just hang out with your battles. You can still do whatever on base or even hang out with another person's family
@wardm89 Great info. long videos are good and often necessary. 3 questions. 1 - If you were prior enlisted (ie 88M)- do you get to switch MOS & branch, if you went to college/ROTC for something else totally different (ie 17A)? 2- If your major in college for something specific (ie nursing, accounting, IT) , can you wind up being in a branch/MOS that has nothing to do with your education after graduation/commissioning? 3 - If GPA is a major percentage for the final MOS placement, do they take in consideration the major, as some majors are just more "challenging" than others ?
Hey Im a cadet and I can answer some of your questions. 1. Your enlisted MOS has nothing to do with your branch, you can put 88A at the top of your list if you want, or choose another branch. 2. Your major also has nothing to do with your branch, unless you plan to go to graduate school, or if your a nursing major. 3. It depends on the year, some years your GPA would be worth a lot of points on OML, other years it won’t. Depends on your cohort.
ok so im currently in rotc and plan to accept a scholarship and contract in a few months. but I'm kind of bummed because I really wanted to be a 12M (firefighter) in the national guard and help put out wildfires in california. but I read that thats only an enlisted MOS. Is that true? can an officer have a specific enlisted mos like a firefighter? thanks! hooah!
I don't think there is. If it were possible every year there would be hundredsss of people doing it so it would make little sense to allow it. Maybe there is some special circumstance but I would just assume that, no you can't.
Hi! I'm headed off to basic training in like 19 days and my ultimate goal is to become an officer. I've asked a lot of people and I truly need advice. I've been watching your videos and they've helped me a lot. But I would like to ask you more questions and have a full blown conversation. If that's possible please let me know where and how. Thank you. And I've also talked to my recruiters about this as well and got a lot of advice from them. But I would like to ask YOU questions. You went through the process and you know how it's done.
Question i got expelled from high school back in last November for protecting somebody who was getting threats because the school would'nt do anything anyways long story short i got expelled so now i have to get my GED because i was two years ahead and the took all my credit away even some i already had but i was planning on going thru basic will i still be able to join the military even with a GED? I've looked it up but Im still confused.
Im still gonna talk to my recruiter about it but thank you sir much appreciated. I still have to go take the ASVAB i think ill do okay on it ive been studying for it for a few weeks now but minimum around 50(ish) i think i can get that. Thanks again like the videos really helpful and alot of us that are getting ready odviously it explains everything we're wondering. Do you think you could follow me on instagram so if i have any questions now and then i could ask you?
No I believe your 8 years restart after you get commissioned, but you keep your time in service, and can get extra pay until O3. (O-1E to O-3E) *I believe*
