Um.. 4:20 What map even is that? Incredibly wrong... Since when was Czechia and independent "czechoslovakia" without the Slovak part? Never... That map is just wrong...
Again, your bad guy music and sinister motive narrative is the wrong way round though I guess that is why the bad guys succeed, a never ending barrage of b.s. pumped through the media to convince you black is white. “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” - Malcolm X.
@@tomasvrabec1845 The map site used by GeoPerspective out of a lack of equally versatile sites he's aware of has plenty of very shoddy borders. However the map in question at your marked time seems to be set around the tumultuous period of civil wars in eastern Europe, as Hungary clings to its wider borders, Poland's yet to receive the German lands and Ukraine is marked independent. It obviosuly is still very wrong, and you could defintiely help if you can find a good online map site where you can find accurate borders from like the early medieval to modern age
When I was a young man, I travelled around Europe for a month and found the people of Austria to be very friendly and helpful. Innsbruck was incredibly clean.
The BIG SHIFT in the austrian victimhood mentality/identity went completely under in your video! Not in the early 2000s, but in 1991 Vranitzky (Chancellor) held a famous speech acknowledging & appologizing for Austrias complicity in nazi crimes, followed by an official declaration in '93 by the state in which the shared responsibility was further acknowledged & appologized for, etc. I grew up here in the early 2000s - we were taught about Austrias complicity & own crimes just as rigorously as you would be in Germany. My father always used to tell me "the biggest nazis were always Austrians..." & I've never heard anyone in my country claim this not to be (sadly) true. You should've emphasized this drastic shift more, the dillusional lie of victimhood told by & for the post war generation is really not at all part of our identity anymore (and after talking to elders I dont think anyone ever really believed it but thats just my opinion)
Two sidenotes to that topic: 1: the actual term "first victim of nazi germany" was coined be the allies on a conference (i think in Jalta). And they, as well as the first austrian government after the war, didn't mean the austrian population but the institution of the country of austria as a soverign country. (and as many terms this was then used wrongly for a time) 2: i am a bit older than you (growing up in the 80's and 90's) and what we learned about WW2 and austrians involvement could be summed up as *_we_*_ were very prominently on the evil side, _*_we_*_ are therefore guilty, _*_we_*_ commited war crimes and nobody else commited any_ The whole "we" thing always felt a bit odd to me. Especially to have to feel guilty for something i was not involved in and could not prevent by any means and that had happened even before my parents were born. It's important that people learn what has happened and how cruel mankind can be, but in a way so people could learn to not fall for demagoges and political grifters so easily. Not to install guilt in children.
Thanks. I’m 30 and super annoyed when Germans act like we deny our past. That is absolutely not the case. In school we fill Years of history classes only talking about WW2 and our responsibility.
I am born 87 and already was taught about our false victimhood in school. But to be honest, if you are born before 1990 there is a good chance that you had a grandfather who was SS-Member or at LEASt made hard jokes about jews on a regular basis, so it was also pretty obvious without learning it in school.....
@@TheNamu87 Disagree. I was born at the start of the 80's. My grandfather was in the austrian bundesheer (mountain pioneers) before 1938, and in 38 his unit had the commander replaced and got rebadged. They were sent into "trouble" right from the beginning, he got wounded several times and spent years as a russian pow. (He experienced malnutrition in his own unit and as a pow, got diseases from malnutrition...) He never made any jokes about jewish people. Neither did any other of my relativs of that generation i have encountered. And from all the other old people in the village i grew up with there too were never any jokes about jewish people that i have heard them tell. So i don't know in what Milieu you grew up in, but in my rural area of austria, this was not a thing. Elder people who had been alive during taht time had a general distrust, dislike and som even fear of red army soldiers and sometimes women mentioned fractions of what had happened, but other than that, they were happy that the war became more distant with every year.
Why did you use Paganini's music (an Italian) when talking about Austria? Dont they have enough of their own musicians? Well, i just find it pretty strange.
I often wonder how well-researched and accurate many of these types of videos are, as I have noted on many how they like to REWRITE HISTORY, for their purpose whatever that might be!
Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb and the reason for the assassination was the annexation of Bosnia by Austro Hungary. Prior to WW1 Konrad von Hoetzendorf asked the Kaiser over 20 times for war with Serbia.
The reason was the idea of a greater serbia by an organization called the black hand and them aquiring young "disposable" attackers for threir planned terroristic attack. And to the second point: Franz Ferdinand was the one who prevented the war each time. So Princip shot exactely the one figure who was against the war, and so a war was started. The strange thing to me is that there is allegedly a statue of Gavrillo Princip in Serbia to honour the guy. But when we thing if it, he was the guy who brought a world war onto them that cost them a huge portion of their population, a lot of suffering, and no territorial gains in the long run. (the statue was made relatively recently, so after the balkan wars of the 90's and 2000's.)
@@nirfz 🤣🤣🤣 yeah thats why Konrad von Hoetzendorf wanted many years before war with Serbia. He asked around 20 for it but yeah its a greater Serbian idea come on you cant be that naive.
Sorry, but there's a lot of misinformation you're spreading about Austria being EU's "most pro-Russian country" aside from Hungary. Let me debunk it. 13:50 So you say that Austria is the only European country aside from Hungary that is still pro-Russian? Wrong, Austria has always firmly opposed the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has supported sanctions, plus has sent Ukraine more humanitarian aid than 95% of all countries worldwide. Austria, like Switzerland, just doesn't want to give up its neutrality. Ukraine in return is very grateful towards Austria and doesn't hold any grudge at all. Austria's and Ukraine's relations are very excellent. 14:15 It's much easier said than done in Austria's case. Austria is a landlocked country in the middle of Europe and it's far easier to get Russian gas than from the US or Arabic states. 14:40 Because it goes against Austrian neutrality. Same with Switzerland. Most countries in the world don't send weapons to Ukraine either. Still, humanitarian aid is a lot. 16:48 Kneissl is pretty much the only former Austrian politican that is really pro-Russian, and this woman is HATED by the Austrian population. 18:25 And what does the Schengen veto have to do with Russia? Austria clearly said that they don't want more illegal immigrants from the Balkans, and even if the veto was unjustified, it has totally NOTHING to do with Russia. I mean, Russia wasn't even mentioned once in Austria's Schengen veto. Illegal immigration is generally a huge topic in Austria. At least Austria never vetoes any EU aid for Ukraine, much unlike Hungary. Austria also isn't the country who wants the sanctions on Russia to be removed. 19:50 Yeah, it's much easier to blame Austria for accusing them "being pro-Russian" when Slovakia and possibly also the Netherlands (very recently) have more pro-Russian governments.
If Austria doesn't want more balkan immigration then why did Croatia join, a literal Balkan country, and Romania who has abot 15% of territory in the Balkans didn't? Plus every data shows that Romania is not a transit route for migrants! It's time to face the fact that your politicians are are bought and sold by Russia. If Schengen migration is such a concern for you Austrians maybe you should leave Schengen!
Kneissl is not the only politician with ties to Russia. We have the FPÖ in general and former SPÖ politicians. And we have austrian companies profiting from the war and refusing to exit Russia.
Regarding the last point, my original script involved a part about the politics of post WW2 Austria and how the FPÖ has remained basically the kingmaker party and how today the country seems set to elect the FPÖ into power in full.
@@alexandrupopa8333 It doesn't matter if Romania is a heaven for illegal immigrants or not. This Schengen veto has absolutely nothing to do with Russia and Romania is trying to frame Austria as "pro-Russian" country after not coping with it.
@@hgzmatt The popularity of the FPÖ in Austria is not unique in Europe. We just have to look at the recent elections in Slovakia and the Netherlands. The AfD also seems to be popular in Germany. However, right now, the FPÖ is still in opposition and the only major Austrian party to be pro-Russian. My problem with this video in general is that Austria is despicted here as the most pro-Russian European country (even more so than Switzerland and Serbia, the latter having ties with Russia since WW1), which is complete nonsense. It's pretty clear that the current Austrian government doesn't oppose Russian sanctions and never vetoes them unlike Hungary. Populism isn't just popular in Austria.
So why would Austria have to bow to NATO dictate? And NATO, as instrument of USA wants to cut all ties between EU and Russia for decades, making EU geopolitically irrelevant and humble servant of USA
@@anthony64632 Unlike you I live in EU. So you are the ignorant one. But I give you one example. Remember nuclear deal with Iran under Barrack Obama? All accepted it at the time, even USA. However after elections new US president scuttled the deal and reintroduced sanctions. Instead of ignoring sanctions, EU went along, at great cost in lost trade deals. And remember famous "Screw EU" of Victoria Newland and coup in Kiev instead of early elections? Well, attempt to install Anti-Russia in Ukraine is crumbling and EU is indeed screwed.

As an Austrian I am grateful for this accurate depiction of our history. Especially the white-washing and hypocrisy about our disproportionate involvement in Nazi crimes. Also the "we're proud of our landscape" part is just true!
As an American who has travelled for 40+ years, without doubt the most openly anti-American country I have visited is Austria. Ex: visited a restaurant highly recommended by trusted travel advisors and our concierge. It was not too crowded and the curt hostess asked my husband and me to wait at the bar. There were a number of internationals there and we were enjoying visiting and comparing notes. After an hour or so we noticed everyone was being seated with the exception of 3 groups of 2: a couple from NY, a British couple and us. The restaurant was only half full and we knew they did not take reservations. It soon became clear that we were not welcome to eat there. Upon return I visited the Trip Advisor website and learned that was de riguere treatment for Americans at that restaurant. The posters even described the hostess precisely. I contacted our trip advisor and our concierge with our experience. This ugliness was reinforced by cab drivers and locals we met. We loved Austria but they did *not* love Americans.
As an Austrian I can only smile about such a statement Think you should travel a bit more so that you see waiting in comfortable restaurant chair is not the worst episode in your travel life
I also experienced anti American sentiment in some parts of Europe. I had some who would interrupt me at various public places just to yell at me about their hateful opinions. I tried to be polite despite this treatment but it was tiresome to experience repeatedly when I was just trying to quietly get a meal or a drink and not bothering anyone.
Dear Kathy! As an Austrian I feel ashamed to hear your story. Like in other countries in Austria there are age old prejudices and bad jokes about other peoples (namely the German "Piefke" for example) but I have never heard that this lead to an incident like the one you reported and I hope it will never happen again.
Theres is also a lot of Austrians who are obsessed with the Us the same Way many Nerds are obsessed with Japan. Critisicing American Foreign Politics doesnt mean someone hates you. If you didnt feel welcome im sorry for that. People forget that Politics is not the same as hating the People from a Country.
As an Austrian I‘m deeply sorry for the treatment you received. Even here in the comments, some Austrians are proofing your point. Austrians in general are full of prejudice, envy and a serious inferiority complex. On my travels to the U.S. I‘ve met a lot of amicable, open and wonderfully confident people - Austrians are the exact opposite. It’s just sad.
Russian FDI into Austria is mostly just pass through accounts and not actual investment. Russian FDI into Austria is completely unimportant from an economic POV. So you are paint a picture here as Russia would be some major investor in Austria, which it is not. Other than Kneissl, who is one of the most despised people within Austria, all those people you mentioned with Russian connections resigned in the wake of the invasion. And how the hell does Wirecard come into play here? This fraud has absolutely nothing to do with Russia. The only reason Marschalek fled to Russia was because he knew that would protect him from criminal prosecution. RBI cannot leave the Russian market as of now because that would mean losing billions in funds that would probably kill the group as a whole. No shit are they not leaving Russia without being forced to. Austria has supported every sanctions package so far and is firmly on the side of Ukraine. Other the sending weapons, of which Austria doesn't have any to begin with, they support Ukraine all the way. It is a landlocked country that just cannot build LNG terminals at is shore to substitute Russian Gas with the one from Qatar... Schengen expansion also has absolutely nothing to do with Russia and everything with fake refugees flooding Austria. It is Romanians engaging in illegal logging activities, not Austrian companies (at most they are buying wood). It is corruption within Romania that makes this illegal logging activities possible. It is their fucking job to enforce their laws. Not the job of Austria.
As a Romanian citizen, I tell you that Austria paid the corrupt politicians in Romania and they bought the Romanian strategic companies for nothing, they stole and destroyed the forests in Romania... And play Russia's game so that Romania does not enter Schengen, stop protecting Austria, the thieves from Austria...
Major Austrian companies encouraging corruption, buying illegally logged wood, is that not important? Pressuring Romania for an even bigger cut of their natural resources through the Schengen veto. Is that not Austria? Rich Austrian companies are actively encoraging corruption to gain even more profits, and all the blame on those they corrupted, because they are poor and thus easier to corrupt. And they remain poor, as the profit margins goninto the pockets of Austrian companies taking it all abroad, avoiding paying their taxes...
I had just read about that exact same scandal like a day ago, the only reason he fled to russia is because he knows politicians are to stubborn to negotiate with russia for his deportation.
*After ww2 Austria was under Soviet Union Zone - so - Soviet Union proposed to leave Austria in exchange for Military Neutrality - which Austria still respect - that's it*
part of it was under Soviet control, the other parts were on American, British and French control. And those zones are still different up until this day. The former American zone is still the richest region of Austria, while the former Soviet East is still economically a bit behind, including Vienna.
Instead of the military occupation of only part of Austria, the USSR chose to occupy the entire country with KGB agents. To this day, major decisions Austria makes are influenced by Moscow through dozens of corrupt politicians and massive infiltration of the Austrian secret services. What happens in Austria's foreign policy is largely decided in Moscow. Austrian business abroad is equally corrupted by the Russian KGB mafia
Dear content creator I watched your piece, I seemed informative, yet lacked cohesiveness and continuity. It felt like multiple people wrote the piece, and you did your best to read it. Your piece mentioned that the majority of high ranking officer in the Nazi party were Austrian, which is true. But you may be surprised if you had researched the birth place of Adolf Hitler. Your surprises can be minimized if you do your research.
Selective history, much? The British were in that alliance, too. So, they’re working with the Russians now? The Austrian Army was also part of Napoleon‘s Grand Army when he invaded Russia bdw. Your point is, you don’t have any.
No Austria in some kind of prostitute now, Austria is safe in the center of the Europe so Austria can flirt with Russian Empire, anyway they don't like American and English people, Italians too, but Germans prefer Italy to Austria .
No not really, when you consider historically it had mostly eastern ties because of the Austro-Hungarian empire, geographically its more east than west, and it's not a member of NATO. It is closer to being a western country, but it isn't fully western.
We have Commies in Vienna that literally parrot all of putins talking points about how ukraine is also at fault for the war because the azov battallion exists. They are also big supporters of palestine but then unironically close their ears really hard when someone talks about what Moscow did to Chechnya / Grozny more specifically. Absolutely despicable
You are judging a whole country based on what it's politicians did at various different time in history. The same could be said about Europe and the US.
I used to walk past the huge stalinist monument that the "liberators" built. Turned my stomach to think that the Austrians were forced to worship the army or rapists, and the monument still stands.
@@РубероидОтважный half of Eastern Europe was allied with Nazi Germany: Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, all the three Baltics, ... The history of WWII is not only about Poland. And Poles especially disliked being liberated by Stalin just as well. Maybe the ones who welcomed the Red Army the most were the Czechs, but also they soon regretted it.
The only reason why Austria (as well as the Netherlands) is against Romania joining the Schengen-Area is, that the majority of crimes in Austria are comited by Romanians😬 This has nothing to do with Pro-Russia. BTW: Austria is no way pro-Russia as it is presented in this video. The majority is overwhelmingly pro-EU as well as pro-Ukraine. Austria even send more financial aid to Ukraine than Italy or Spain or Lithuania. We also have more Ukrainian refugees than countries like Finland, Sweden, Portugal or Greece. Greetings from an pro Ukrainian Austrian😄
Do you even understand what Schengen means? Romania is in the EU and thus any Romanian can enter Austria with no visa, just an ID card, an can stay and work there. Not even your authorities do not invoke what you said! Schengen is to protect you from immigration from non-EU countries, because it means passport controls. It also means lost time for trucks carrying goods at border controls. For the average Romanian it is not that important, one still has access to Schengen countries. Some people comment without having a clue about how the EU functions!
The very same countries that are so high-minded about the Russia/Ukraine attacked and dismembered Serbia in the 1990s and are today openly complicit in the Gaza genocide. Austria is right to put its interests first. That's what America does all the time.
2:18 Ausgleich (or for english speakers for pronounciation we could say Ous-gly-ch the ou like in out and the ch like in the scottish word Loch) 5:22 afaik there was no coalition between the chritian democratic party and the Heimwehr, the Heimwehr was the paramilitary organization of that party. (so made up by members of the party) 13:00 At the end of WW2 oil was found in lower austria, and the soviets occupied that area as it was within their zone. For decades the soviet union got all the money from selling that oil. (this was part of the wiki articles until recently, but somehow has vanished) So while the soviet union left in 1955 and the oil company became state property, they still got the money as reaparations. And that was also why there was the gas import. It was that company that arranged it. 14:42 "Not sending any weapons to Kiev" Of course not, if austria would do that, that woulld break neutrality (and the austrian neutrality law) Switzerland and Ireland also can't send weapons out of that reason. As for the politicians: Schüssel at 16:50 has lost a lot of trust by the population at the start of him being chancellor long ago: (before the election he said "If we end up on third place, we go into opposition" and then he ended up in 3rd place and used the FPÖ who had come second to become chancellor. So the whole country knew he was just a powerhungry d***.) Gusenbauer at 17:01 has become a bit of a grifter since leaving politics, while Kern (at 17:12) has renounced his partition in russian railways quickly after the invasion of ukraine. (unlike the other 2 mentioned here, he tried to get uninvolved with russia immediately) And at least he was the former head of austrian railways before a short intermezzo in politics. Karin Kneissl (at 17:25) i think should have her austrian citizenship renounced, as she not only moved to russia, but also prominently promotes russian propaganda. The illegal logging in romania i think should be prosecuted drastically, as it isn't something the federal state of austria is involved, but a few private companies, but it throws a very bad light on the whole country, while 99% of the austrian population don't even know that this happens. Also: Schengen and the EU are two different things: The UK never was and Ireland is not a member of Schengen, while Norway and Switzerland are. As for the austrian veto: When the south balkan route was mostly closed ilegal migration switched to the east "balkan route" and that means through exately these two countries. Since 2015 austria is together with sweden the country that bore the highest number of asylum seekers/refugees /economic refugees per capita. So yes of course there are concerns. Thanks to the international asylum laws more than 7 000 children from syria were allowed to follow their refugee parent to vienna last year, this year the number is going to be bigger. And vienna is just one part of austria. The country isn't that big, and children with a different native language make up more than 50% of viennese school children. (52.7% in 2021) This is a problem. And while the austrian politicians aren't that good at adressing problems, they seem to try the thing that needs the least effort: reducing the number of incomming new migrants via the land route through Romania and Bulgaria. Doesn't make them popular, but it doesn't take much effort for them.
The TV-framing effect used for the 1930's segment was so distracting from the otherwise interesting content. I couldn't help but think TV broadcasts didn't begin until the late 30's and a set like shown is from decades later.
Your over thinking it :D professionally its just there because historical footage generally doesn't have enough pixels for 4k or even HD and an antique tv fills the space nicely

Great! Very informative video about Austrian geopolitics. It should have more views. I only knew that it was a buffer state between west and soviet but it was not clear why. Also now i understand why i faced the most racism in Austria as compared to other european countries I travelled. Well, A country which has a very strong xenophobic past and they never corrected it, what else can you expect from them
Cry me a river, White people face racism in most brown countries. Nothing to correct here, we just like to stay among ourselves. We shouldnt even be in EU, the Swiss way should be our way.
Ukraine could have followed a path similar to Austria's, unluckily they chose the path of a failed buffer state to NATO and the EU. Now they are paying the consequences.
Well Austria was a buffer state too between nato and soviet. The only difference is the people in austria are not slavic and has no cultural connection with Russia. So it was okay for russia to accept, if economically Austria sided with EU
That was a curveball. Could have been issues with Kremlin value proposition that many nations enjoined for decades. FYI most Russians prefer to stay in Baltic buffer states instead of moving to RF. Let's think about that.
As an Austrian I will confirm that you’re spot on with your analysis. Seeing all of that so condensed and concise makes my stomach turn and although I‘ve grown used to being ashamed for my country this is taking that to a whole new level. A very precise depiction of all the obnoxiousness of Austrian politics. Dear Western World, I‘m so sorry for the disgusting mentality of (most) Austrians!

I did live close to London and 98€ would not even be enough to get you into London 3 days in a row.
