Buses don't usually break down on scheduled roads. "Tuesday, mile marker 37, Rte. 123, approx 12:37pm, fuel pump failure." LOL.

A similar thing is happening with public transport in Ireland. People causing trouble on the trains and trams where there is little or no staff to supervise things. Not as bad on busses where the drivers can stop on the road and call for backup. Sometimes services into the rougher estates are stopped at night. What happens then is that parents or community leaders take the trouble makers in hand and try and sort them out. Then services resume. Ireland is in the middle of a transition away from car use for everything to public transport but the need to improve quality, lower costs and stop public order offences is becoming a hot political issue

Zaandam has had its fair share of buses being targeted by stone-throwers and (possibly) even getting shot at, at some point the drivers collectively refusing to drive through the rough neighbourhoods there. The trainstation there is now unsupervised as far as I know. The result is a textbook-classic: all kinds of people you don't want at a trainstation, now do enter: they just kick in the gates that should keep them out. (According to the slogans used in the past when the electronic ticketing system was introduced 10-15 years ago, this would not be possible, but yeah, everyone with a clear mind knew it wouldn't stop fare-evaders)

Actually, these days airports are getting pretty bad, too, as far as “interesting characters.” Many large airports allow a population of homeless to live inside the airport, 24/7. At LAX there are something like 300 or more permanent residents. They can’t get past security to the gates so they inhabit the restrooms and sleep in waiting areas outside the security zones.

One bus had a single mom who was earning money having sex on the back seat with traveling soldiers. Her children were being watched by those in the front.

I went 1,000 kms from Zhuji City to Beijing at 305 kms hr. It cost me $120 Cdn. and took 4.5 hrs including over an hour of stops and I enjoyed the scenery. In 4.5 yrs in China, Ive seen as much as 50 yrs in Canada on our shitty slow buses and trains. Haut frequence maudite mensonge!

For half a century, Seattle's Greyhound station was just outside the main downtown area, and was nice enough. It also had ready access to public transit. Recently a new Greyhound station was built ---it's a couple of blocks from the two major pro sports stadiums and the main light rail terminal is a block away, with other public transit handy. It's a nice, new building really in the main downtown area.

A friend of mine who is a musician took his guitar on a greyhound trip..they forced him to check it and and that was the last he ever saw of it..he went around with corporate a few times but it was obvious they weren`t going to shell out a few hundred just to do the right thing..he`d had the guitar for many years

Frequent Amtrak rider here. As much as people harp on the trains being severely delayed, I'd rather deal with that than anything else. I've never been on a Greyhound, but it just seems like it's beyond awful.

Must be Columbus, I'm a trucker for 49 years, traveled the world. Nastiest men's room was that bus station. Don't tell someone to go to Hell, tell them to go Grayhound.

I used to drive for Greyhound, it was driving a human garbage truck the buses had cock roaches. . The passengers were shit back in 1991. Now I can't even imagine how the passengers are now.

As a trucker when I'd see the bus stopped at a cafe I'd like to visit with the driver just to hear his nightmare stories. My fav was the passenger who jumped out the window near Green River UT. They stopped and couldn't find him, his body had bounced into a tall bush. You could write a book but nobody would believe the stories.

I had the highly dubious pleasure of arriving at the Indianapolis Greyhound station back in the 1980s; I had to wait there for a connecting ride. From what I gather from your post, it either hasn't changed or has simply gotten worse. I couldn't even use the bathroom because of all the harassment. The whole ride experience as well taught me to never use Greyhound again.

My mom used to go to Jacksonville Florida for a religious conference back in the 1970's. Your description of the bus ride would be accurate. Very clean, you had some interesting people on the bus but they weren't dangerous or threatening.

@@IntrepidFraidyCat My mom had a driver's license but didn't want to drive the 125 miles to Jacksonville from where we lived. The station back in the 1970's was generally safe but you had to be careful if you went outside the station. By the early 1980's, things had changed. The last time she took the Greyhound bus to Jacksonville was in 1982. Going home people were pushing each other aside to get unto the bus, a couple was in a heated verbal argument and some other stuff was going on in the station which really scared her. After that, I would go with her by car when she went to the conference.

@Willy Rivera The bus driver on the bus with the guy in the video was very courteous and professional. But the guy on the video had basically a wonderful experience on his bus trip. I have had few problems with passengers on the trips I've taken on Greyhound, and the bus drivers I respect; I leave them alone, but some of the employees in the Atlanta Greyhound station can be total jerks. I say this because it seems like some of the employees in that particular station want to give bad service and actually want people to give them bad reviews, so I try to please them.

Americans just prefer to fly or drive a car. Most of us view mass ground transit as being something for peasants, recognizing it isn't like that in most of the industrialized world. I do love a good road trip in a car.

@@douglasthompson8927 Greyhound is a private for-profit company, not a taxpayer-funded transportation network. It is "public" in that it is "available to the public to ride on" but that's it.

Type S fan, Greyhound can be just fine for short hops like what you are doing. Long distance such as transcontinental on Greyhound is not recommended.

Thanks for the tip as I may have to ride the bus to St Louis soon. From where I live flying there would be cost prohibitive not to mention the taxi fares to get to my nearest airport. The bus to there is about $70.

My friend quit driving for them. She said the company would cheat her on her pay and between the crazy ass passengers and busses breaking down, she had had enough.

When I was about to visit Ukraine (well, Kyiv, as the friend who invited me lived there) and went to a store to buy a suitcase (I had never flown before), there was a guy with some expert knowledge on Ukraine there. He strongly advised against taking a marshrutka, a small bus that carries about 20 seated passengers, but in reality often gets packed to the point the doors can't even close anymore. The reason was just the extremely dangerous driving, the bad state of the road-surface and the technical state of the buses being 'a point of discussion'. But they usually connect the outer edges of cities to the inner city or across and at least connect to regular buses. They are usually also cheaper than regular buses, so you'll find all kinds of people on board. So, when I ended up in the company-restaurant that friend worked at and her nephew wanted me to see the railroad-exhibition at Tsentralni ('central' trainstation in Kyiv), we had two choices: taking a regular bus at the nearest stop that was more than 1,5 km away, or walking 300 meters to a marshrutka stop. Considering it was mid-winter and the streets were filled with piles of snow (and icycles from the company-building slammed into the walkway-shelter we were under), we went for the marshrutka. Yes, it was exactly as advertised (and I got lucky, as the evening peak had started and traffic was only moving slow at most points) but I did not want to miss it for the world. The small cushion at the driver where you just throw your banknotes on to pay for the journey, all the stickers, commercials, curtains and what not the driver used to decorate his vehicle with, intermittent lighting, the kind of fair-ride I got because of all the holes in the road and eventually just getting so much passengers on board one had to pay the journey by giving the passenger in front of you some money, which would then be relayed via other passengers until it would get to the driver, who would issue the change, which would then make its way back to the passenger in the same manner. Eventually just getting the backpack of someone else shoved in my face as it just got packed (seriously, since then, I don't easily complain anymore about packed buses or trains anymore in The Netherlands, where I live) Just after we exited ours, another marshrutka driver decided to drive the wrong way into traffic as he thought waiting for the red light was stupid. So yeah... I don't recommend it, but darn, do ride them once. There's just nothing comparable to them in my country at all.

@@Pechocho. it’s honestly not bad, don’t listen to the comments, most people just have a problem with everything. I’ve taken Greyhound multiple times and have never had a problem or bad experience. The only problem I will honestly say I have is some of the stations security allowing non-customers into the station and they beg and harass people (NYC Port Authority) but the drivers and other passengers have always been polite.

Bus breakdowns were also a problem then. Even well into the 1970s some of the old Scenecruisers (built in 1954-55) and other older buses were still in daily use at least in the western states. I loved the old antiques a lot but apparently they were cutting corners on maintenance and service times. My rides never broke down but I heard of a lot that did.

Was wondering where that feature went! I always known my trips I always seen a movie whether it’s old or new. I’ll always remember it being the first time I seen The Terminal, then Evolution my favorite. I HAD to take a greyhound around 2019 when my flight back from LAX was cancelled. Had to travel back to the Midwest. ALL flights were booked to where I needed to go which was insane to me. Nothing available until that next week. Got to Las Vegas and thought yep, I am not sitting in this bus for 10+ hours. Thank god my friend helped me find a flight in the Vegas airport. Never breathed a HUGE sigh of relief my whole life 😂

Not only in major cities but bus stations in smaller towns are just as sketchy and loaded with the mentally unstable. It is like Greyhound attracts the dregs of society no matter where it goes.

Chicago's wasn't that bad. It is across the street from Union Station. I'd love to take a Mexican bus line from Chicago to Guadalajara, but the Mexican buslines I've read say that they operate as Greyhound partners and Chicago-Laredo or Chicago-El Paso is a bit much.

On 6/25/22, I had a $58 ride booked with Greyhound for a trip from NYC to Binghamton NY. I had to reschedule the trip to 7/9/22 so I called Greyhound. After I paid the $20 re-book fee, the lady in the Philippines gives me my confirmation #. When I tried to print the ticket the day before my trip using my confirmation #, I get an OOPS message. I call customer care. Apparently, the ditz who was supposed to reschedule my trip rescheduled it for that same 6/26 date! Based on your reply (10 years!), I guess I can kiss my $78 good-bye.

It says a lot about buses and bus stations, when Greyhound wants to relocate the station and nobody in town wants it built near them. That happened recently where I live and they still haven't been able to agree on a permanent home for it.

Sadly that route no longer exists. There is now no bus service South of Saint John, New Brunswick. Indeed, Maritime Bus has currently suspended service to Quebec so you cannot even get to Montreal to connect to an American carrier to ultimately get to Boston. I moved home to New Brunswick last year; I discovered that I had no choice but to buy a car. ☹️

Mega Bus breaks down much more than Greyhound. They maintain their buses motor wise pretty well but I only speak for out West.

Yeah, but bus travel is only for those these days with no other option. Before 1985, some people rode the bus as a choice. Nowadays, with a little preplanning you can book a flight for cheaper than the bus and far less travel time in most cases. But, this summer has been a trog for air travel too. Nothing is a given anymore. But for the bus I'd have to be super desperate. Back as a youngster I loved Greyhound. But that feels like another century.

That’s because people in Philadelphia are sarcastic and rude. It isn’t just Greyhound. I lived there for two years. Worst two years of my adult life.

Poor people ride the bus in the US. Air travel is much better and faster.

@@Neville60001 On some of the main routes between big cities yes. The rural routes and small cities have all be abandoned. Leaving no public transportation for people to get to medical appointments.

I moved away from Alberta last year. There is bus service between Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver (and places along the route). Otherwise there is no public transportation. I wanted to go from Calgary to Drumheller. Driving was literally the only option! Another carrier advertised service on that route, and then went out of business before ever carrying a single passenger.
