How Bad Are Smash Ultimate's Mid Tiers? 

Mid tiers in Ultimate can go far in tournaments with a good bracket piloted by a good player. Very capable of making upsets and should not be slept on.

Imagine seeing Luigi’s successful 2024 and still thinking he’s a mid tier 😂

Luigi won a couple majors in Japan via Raru.

As a Luigi (kinda?) main, the reason why he’s mid tier is because although he has the infamous zero to death, he has horrible, maybe even the worst air speed in the game. His recovery is also quite bad, all you have to do is body block green missile. However there are some players like Raru, who are just on another level. I do think he should be top mid tier or bottom high tier

Remenber when Pichu was in conversations considered the best character in the early metagame of the game, along with Peach (and Daisy) Yeah, good times😔

-Hot Take: Vanilla Ult Pichu was overrated. Most of his early hype was cause the game was new, unoptimized as many of his strong combos were on the simpler side, along with being a returning Melee vet with the additional perception of "OMG Pichu's actually good!". Especially since we had less thorough resources such as frame data and hitboxes visualizers. While his nerfs were enough to drop him down a tier, they tend to get overblown since Pichu isn't much easier to hit, his self-damage is barely higher (it's still chip damage), and F-Tilt can be hard to land due to be being stubby, while the hitbox that 2-frames lasts for only a single frame. The character is just too frail, too stubby and has worse offensive options then Pika with the lack of hitbox on Up-B and being slower with a T-Jolt that's harder to combo off of. Along with people figuring out how to escape Bair loops & Thunder on-stage. (The latter of which really sucks and should have been fixed) There's other characters with similar strengths without the extreme downsides. Even if he wasn't nerfed, he'd have no chance at being Top Tier in the current meta. Heck even in an optimized, release day Ult meta, I'd argue he would have greatly struggled to maintain Top Tier.

This goes to show just how well balanced Smash Ultimate is compared to previous Smash games and even most fighting games in general. This game has 80+ characters and at least 70 of them are viable.

I've been using Duck Hunt online to exploit a glitch with his final smash, and one thing that strikes me about him from when I'm forced to use him normally is that he doesn't have a lot of KO options outside of his smash attacks. Back air and up air are decent, but other than that, you kinda have to use his smash attacks.

The funny thing is that in the world of smash, all these characters are still upper high tier and regular high tier. Mid tier is more like Ike and Simon so all these characters are broken in conclusion.

My top 3 mains in Ultimate are all Mid tiers, nice to see you talk about them after the high and low tiers of Ultimate!

Pre-Watch Opinions: They're pretty good. They can go on strong tournament runs and works as solid Secondary/Pockets. Some could go even higher, though many of them got overshadowed by DLC and I'm not holding my breath they will rise up to their potential while Ult's metagame is still hot. Also RIP 13.03 still offering no balance changes.

28:19 Did you overlook Pichu? Because he's lighter than Puff by six weight units in game. Pichu is 62 and Puff is 68, being almost two times lighter than Ganon, DK, DDD, K. Rool, and Bowser.

Hero had 1 valid case for being banned. Language barrier+down b. Smash being a global game means this can 100% come up and if u cant read the down b menu u jave no idea what hero has waiting for u, and you may charge into a thwack without realizing it. This is something easilly fixed (custom icons for each spell) but Nintendo isnt built like that.

Honestly, I think all of Ultimate's Mid Tiers have a lot of potential to win tournaments, especially characters like Greninja, Falco, Mii Brawler and Meta Knight (I'm totally not a Greninja and Meta Knight main)

Makes you think there are so many characters in Ultimate, you pull a page out of Marvel 2's book and do a "low tier" tournament where you remove the top of the roster and see how the meta would develop if there wasn't a top tier presence.

The thing is… mid tiers in ultimate are the most interesting characters. Despite not being top, they are also some of the most infamous characters in the game. Ness with pk fire Luigis grab (yay they made it even more obnoxious) Sephiroth memed for DA BIG SWORD Ice climbers for their… interesting and simple combos Hero for… being sakurais sneaky way of putting casual smash into competitive smash as a big “fuck you” for making smash bros a big e sport And then theres my favorite. Ridley. A character who I feel can be alot higher. Although his recovery is kind of surprising meh. Up b can’t be angled anywhere like with say sephiroth up b. Which has led me to some “bruh” deaths. And it took me forever to learn that.

Yea I don’t agree with some of these characters being mid tier, some should definitely be way higher

People don't talk about it very much but Ult has a massive OCEAN of underexplored midtier characters (My personal favorite is Captain Falcon.) There's a lot of viable characters who theoretically should be good but just end up with a middling rank because they don't have enough privilege to perform as consistently compared to the FP2 characters

Marth's new tippers are not a whole lot different than they were in smash 4. The problem for marth stems from the fact that ultimate is a much faster game with characters able get in and out of his range more quickly. Marth's ability to kill off stray hits is less desirable in ultimate that favors punishing and edge guarding. Marth's range has also been heavily power crept. Marth also received a lot of major nerfs to other parts of his kit. A big one is up throw killing significantly later at around 190. Marth's jab went from an amazing roy-esque combo tool to an extremely underwhelming jab.

It's crazy just how low on the tier list some real heavy hitters like Bowser and King K. Rool are. You'd think realistically that they'd be some of the best characters in the game with how hard they hit, but what really surprises me is how low Inkling of all characters is!

I love how some mid/high tiers are so solid in this game, to the point their best players rate them extremely highly. Asimo (best ryu in the world) think he’s the best character in game. Bloom4eva (one of the best Bayo players) thinks Bayo is top 3 in the game! :3

Ultimate is such a weird game because a character like Luigi with several major wins this year is considered mid tier

If gunner would have been legal in Smash 4, they would have been the worst character in the game. That's not just pretty bad. But to go into detail as to each Mii in Sm4sh here is what tier they'd roughly be in if they were all legal: S: Mii Brawler (I can guarantee it would be at worst 5th, but possibly #2 only because you weren't allowed to be the best spread on them that would put them above Bayonetta more easily. Think Brawler now with crazier damage and kill combos) E: Mii Swordfighter (I don't remember how bad they were exactly, but I think they were similar in viability as Charizard) F: Mii Gunner In Ultimate they are a all closer in strength for sure, but Swordfighter and Gunner are definitely better than Sm4sh.

I wouldn’t call them bad…

its super hard but Lucas has a true universal semi-infinite (goes up to 300%) with footstool djcz, dubbed fruitloops. Lucas should definitely be higher on the tierlists but considering he's so hard and no one is good, he's stuck down at the bottom of mid tier. Djcz just makes his character what he is, but its so hard. Oh and since it's from a single grounded footstool it can be done oos, but also from other moves like dtilt and regular djcz inclusing from ledge.
