As someone who works at a food plant facility. The Dollar stores are referred to as 'third market sales'. And we sell our lesser quality/reject products to them. Being these meals are name brand, you best believe there is some quality issue going on with them that you would not experience if you bought them at Walmart!
Being that Walmart is almost always cheaper than other stores, I've wondered a few times if the manufacturers cut a few more corners on the stuff they ship to Walmart. I can't say I've seen much of a difference though.
I've bought on numerous occasions frozen asparagus at the Dollar Tree. It's sold under the label Jennifer's Garden. But I can see why it's so cheap. The stems are really thin, not those thick stems like you see in grocery stores. However, that has no effect on the nutritional value. I just need something healthy to eat with lunch, I don't care about the appearance. So, the Dollar Tree asparagus is a good deal for someone like me. Per ounce, it costs half as much as at the grocery store.
At least none of them had a portion of eggs. I've been cooking professionally for years & I'm by no means an actual chef but I don't think eggs were ever intended by nature to be frozen.
Thanks for sharing Larry!!! I gotta say, for a $1, any of these would deliver on their promise to keep someone alive and in some cases, actually double as comfort food and help someone psychologically... #TGBATG
I remember when you had about 3K subscribers and used to have mini conversations with me in the comments. Your channel has come SO far. I always pop in to update myself on your vids and make sure your health is still doing okay.
This whole meal could be salvaged if you fry the potatoes and sausage in a pan with a little oil and cook the waffles/french toast in the toaster oven.
It pays to be open minded. I was recently in the hospital for 4 days. I was very afraid of the food. But it was actually ok. Their pancakes were whole wheat, and delicious with butter and syrup. The pork sausage links were good, whereas the turkey sausage links were inedible. Plus there was a cut fruit cup and good coffee. I was surprisingly pleased with the food.
Did it say add butter to the french toast after cooking in the directions? Yes im making fun of you not adding anything to a TV dinner and your reply being it wasnt in the directions.
If one is broke or wants to pick up some low cost emergency meals ...Banquet is the way to go. With them you know exactly what you are getting with their classics. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
The best thing i've seen come out of banquet is the frozen fried chicken thigh tv dinner. Dirt cheap and uses what is clearly old hens that stopped laying, but its a zero tvp, real piece of bone-in thigh with a fried chicken skin thats surprisingly similar to what kfc used to be like, even with the fried chicken smell it gives off. Pretty greasy though. Point being if you are looking for something decent from banquet thats the choice i'd recommend. I don't know if dollar tree has it but plenty of other places do. Anyways its worth it if you're craving some decent fried chicken and don't want to pay a fortune at kfc or have to make it yourself
Just to add, make sure you get the dinner and not family pack. I just checked and it has soy protein concentrate. They only sell the mega meats dinners at my local walmart for $3 but they're still good and so tvp or soy
Ahhhhh, it's evening time, the work day is done, kicked back in my comfy chair at my desk, got a drink beside me and getting my daily dose of Larry. All is right with the world once again.
I'm amazed Dollar Tree had "name brand" food. Not that Brown N Serve is particularly high-quality, but at least it's something you'd expect to see in the grocery store for more than $1
The banquet brown and serve MAPLE flavored sausages are my favorite. But fry them on the stove in a frying pan, do not microwave or bake them. Microwaving or baking them makes the rubbery. They are my go to sausages. You can get a 50 count bag at Walmart for $4.96.
Are you talkin about the sausage patties? I love those fried, usually put em on an egg sandwich. But the log shaped ones never taste as good to me even when fried, idk why
I have eaten the first meal, along with the Jimmy Deans' sausages (there are 5 or 6 links in that pack) to up the protein content (due to my diabetes not handling complex carbs like bread, pasta, and potatoes) for a decent breakfast. Both from the Family Dollar store a block away. Not bad for $2 Thank you for this review. Keep up the great work !!!
I've been eating that style of sausages since I was a kid. I actually ended up disliking the casing kind because of this, so the nostalgia makes me want to try this. I still get banquet sausages by themselves.
After the microwave, Try rolling the sausages around in a smoking hot cast-iron skillet for a few minutes till they get a good char on the outside. Makes a huge difference!
Yes! And for us singles & couples, too; many of those are for 6 or 8 people. I'd like to see an air fryer series. Since I got mine (based on Larry's praise of his) it has literally changed my life! I love that thing. But I could use some ideas; too. Tater tots & chicken in its 1000 forms are great, but other meats make such a mess in there it's discouraging. And I don't like using 5 square feet of foil for every dish, either.
@@devodavis6454 i'd like to see too. I just have me and my 8 year old and don't like spending a lot of time cooking or doing dishes.my friend has an airfryer she said i can use bc it sucks to clean. I was like no thanks not a fan of cleaning myself lol
@@WhitneyAbrina it depends on what you cook. You go get that thing from your friend immediately! Get a big bag of tater tots (or wedges, or steak fries: my fave is crinkle cut usually but the air fryer doesn't do crinkle very well) for three bucks and go to town; you don't have to clean it at *ALL* after taters. Baked potatoes are heaven in there, and fast: wash em & rub em with oil & Kosher salt em for a crispy skin. I make boiled eggs in it, too; 6 minutes at 350, no water or anything. Chicken nuggets or tenders are both no cleanup. If you're willing to use 1 piece of tinfoil, frozen chicken breasts right outta the bag are ready in like 11 minutes. I start em for 1 minute so the seasonings will stick, then cook em at 360 for 8-9 minutes & let rest a minute or two. You can experiment or use a thermometer, but that's my method. I bought a jar of poultry seasoning & another of Cajun seasoning, I have baked chicken a LOT. Take out the foil, put soapy water in it & watch some RU-vid and it's not near as bad as I made it sound, I just hate using the foil every time. And I like to complain ha ha I also get a lot of use out of toaster waffles and frozen sausage patties. I start the sausage in there & when it's almost ready I throw my waffles in. Breakfast from frozen in like 8 minutes. If you get the pre-cooked sausage, no grease: or use that foil and again, zero cleanup. I love the thing, it's changed how I buy groceries. Sorry for writing War & Peace: Air Fryer Edition, but I want everybody to have an air fryer, Heidi!
I'm surprised you haven't invested in a toaster oven what with all these processed meals you try out. Gives you the toasty texture you get from a conventional oven with the convenience of a microwave!
Thank you Larry for doing tests, so we, the people, don't have to. OT: Have you heard of a "butter bell"? I have a couple of them, and (IMHO), they're WONDERFUL. You put butter in them, a bit of water, and the butter bell remains on your counter for up to 3 weeks-in the mean time, soft butter every day. (I have no interest in that product, other than I like it.)
I've had all of these before. The weird, rubbery Brown 'N Serve sausages are definitely the weakest links in these meals. I will not be getting the pancake version again, because I had the same experience you did. The waffle and French toast ones are fine, and the mini hashbrowns are actually pretty good.
In 30 minutes I can make each one of those meals, fresh, and more of them. Like French toast cooks in like 3-4 minutes. Pancakes, make the batter and again cook for like 3 minutes on the frying pan. Belgian waffles (which is much better than those excuse for waffles) just make the batter, put it in the waffle maker and let the machine do all the work.
The best way to make these is to throw the waffles or pancakes into a toaster and the sausage and potatoes in a skillet for 5 mins. It takes way less time and tastes much better.
I'm not gonna lie, when I order sausage, these are exactly what I want. I realize they're like bottom barrel in the sausage world, but it's what my grandparents made every Sunday when we visited
First time seeing this video and your channel, I would recommend that you instead do a side by side comparison of all these three meals, but this time, you get two of each so that one that one you would eat from the oven and the other would be from the microwave, since most of the time it would usually come out much more soggy if you're eating these from a microwave.
just by looking at the amount of butter & syrup i guess you increased the callories by at least 300 per meal - that brings all 3 dishes to 600+ callories or if you've eaten all 3 of them you are close to the recommended amount of callories per day which is crazy
when it comes to Banquet Breakfast Sausages, ya just GOTTA sear em up in a Frying Pan, they're much better when prepared that way, flavor and texture wise.
I recently bought these from my dollar store, I wasn't paying attention, and when I got home realized that they didn't have the potatoes anymore!! It was just french toast and sausage. Why remove the potatoes?? I used to get two of these and cook them in the oven and it was the perfect little breakfast for 2 dollars. I know there are bigger problems in the world but what the hell man!
I just went grocery shopping yesterday but I've been binge watching these videos and I really wanna eat these prepared meals. T_T Even the ones with TVP. Am I weird?
See, I actually like their sausages, which is odd because I usually hate the dreaded "formed meat slurry concoction".. Oh well, everyone has a weakness. Good video, as usual.
I don't know when you bought these, but for the past two or so years, the Banquet breakfasts at our Dollar Tree have no longer included the potato bites, but rather substituted a watery syrup-like liquid in that compartment. It's bad enough that I simply ignore it and use my own fake maple syrup. I actually wrote Banquet about this, but got no reply. I would be delighted if they have returned to the potato bites. I usually heat these up in the microwave to save time. That means that the French toast and the waffle come out soggy, so all that I buy now are the pancake breakfasts. In the microwave, the pancakes come out like...well...pancakes and at least under the butter and syrup aren't too bad. I'm also used to brown 'n' serve sausages and regard them as just different from more traditional casing breakfast sausage, that is, not too bad. We'll just have to disagree on that. Banquet used to make a similarly structured scrambled egg breakfast (egg, sausage, potato bites), but the price point on that was a bit higher than Dollar Tree allows. The eggs were quite firm and not to my liking, but that's a preference, not necessarily a fault. I haven't seen it in years, however.
I love banquet, when you grow up poor you grow up eating what you have too. I love the banquet brown and serve sausage, It doesnt seem to me how you explained the sausage.
my mom used to buy these things all the time for my before school. ate them without a second thought.. now that i’m grown i’m grateful for these things lmao.
Hey Larry, just wanted to check on you brother. It's been a while since your last video. Can you let us know how you are doing? Pray all is well your way and really look forward to hearing from you and seeing your next video. Take care!!
