How Baseball Prepared Derek Jeter for Business | The Deal

George Steinbrenner’s decision back in 2004 to pair Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez-two generationally talented baseball players-turned out to be one of the biggest and arguably most successful deals in New York Yankees history. Or all of sports history for that matter.
The results that sprang from the Boss’s machinations became clear: a perennially contending team, a 2009 World Series championship and yes-a lot of headlines. For Jeter, all of that on-field success-and his ability to manage it so gracefully-made him one of the most sought-after athletes both during and after his baseball career. On the latest episode of The Deal with Alex Rodriguez and Jason Kelly, he tells the backstory of how Michael Jordan made him the first baseball player to be endorsed by a then-nascent Jordan Brand, and reveals some never-before-heard details of his tumultuous, three decade-long relationship with A-Rod.
Jeter distinguished himself during a 20-year career played entirely for the Yankees, winning five World Series rings during that time. The last of the titles (and the last time the Yankees won it all) was accomplished with Rodriguez just a few feet away at third base. The pair had known each other since they were teenagers and even shared a 1997 cover of Sports Illustrated.
Jeter was a first-ballot Hall of Famer, inducted into Cooperstown in 2020 with 99.7 percent of the vote. Shortly after retiring, he joined the ownership group of the Miami Marlins and served as the team’s chief executive (the first Black man to hold such a position in Major League Baseball), overseeing both the business and operations of the club. He resigned in 2022, citing strategic differences with his fellow Marlins owners.
Of late, Jeter has been splitting his time between his young family, investing, endorsements and broadcasting-reuniting with Rodriguez to provide on-air baseball commentary.

I have a great Derek Jeter story. His retirement year the Yankees played the Cardinals in St. Louis; it was so great what Derek did. I was one of the only ones around with a Yankees shirt, a white Nike cotton shirt. They see my shirt, see me staring, and Ill just stare. That's our Yankees! And I'm field side, third base side. I was embarrassed at first, thats our Yankees. I'm watching Teixeira, Cano and Jeter standing there out at shortstop/ shallow outfield talking and looking looking at me look at them and we're all just staring, they're talking and I'm locked in. I didnt wanna embarrass myself lol. And Derek, hes so cool, he says something to them, turns and takes one or a half step and jumps into the air like the Jeter/Jordan Logo. It was one of the coolest things ever. They look over a bit more. I dont know if I waved or what. I just stared. We just watched, looked alike. I never thanked them, I looked over in the visiting dugout which I was seated by. Those guys gave me and those around one of the best moments, those moments were the best moments of that day or that year. Watching the Yankees and my favorite player: Derek Jeter on my favorite team: the Yankees, like one of our favorite athletes: Michael Jordan. Thanks Jesus! Thanks Derek! Thanks MJ! Thanks Alex! Thanks from reading. Thanks so much.

I have my high school jersey signed by Derek at one of his early g2 commercials. Alex and Derek were my heroes growing up, I never made it Pro but always treated the game with respect because of how the captain carried himself! I never tossed a helmet or bat in college just because Derek wouldn't do it

I hear a lot of people talk smack about the Yankees being The Evil Empire !! We build our foundation from the farm !! Then, we fill in the gaps with people who can take us to a higher level !! I see a lot of teams who are 1-2 players away from a run but, they won't pull the trigger to help improve the line up for great players !! Our fan base has high expectations because we in general know what a championship team looks like !! Our roots are stronger than any professional team !! Hate all you want but I would only consider it envy !!

It honestly really bummed me out as a kid that these two were best friends but by the time they were teammates they didn't really like each other anymore. I'm almost certain that was part of the reason why Arod was so bad in the playoffs in his first few Yankee seasons. He always was someone who could get in his own head. But he obviously turned it around in 2009. Now they're in a better place, although clearly not best friends, but it's nice to see them reminiscing and hanging out on purpose.

This is almost like a 180 from interviews featuring these two (even for the preview of "The Captain" a few years ago). Working together on Fox has seemed to allow Derek to at least look like he tolerates A-Rod's presence lol (especially since it was clear that A-Rod has spent a lot of time apologizing and trying to make amends for whatever Jeter was possibly holding against him lol) Edit: Derek was ahead of the game with "The Player's Tribune." Now athletes have taken over the media space.
