@Dolimoe-vh9kqmost people already have 1 or multiple of the items this channel does videos on. Adding to that consumerism would make absolutely no sense. While you might not NEED stickers, it's a low impact way to support the channel and people like to show off their interests. The price is high literally because the point is primarily to support the channel. Which you are welcome to disagree with, but they shouldn't be selling medium/large physical objects that their viewers don't really need.

The Bass Pro Shops Pyramid in Memphis,Tennessee used to be former home of Memphis Grizzlies upon the team’s relocation from its original home of Vancouver, BC, Canada in 2001. They moved out of there by the beginning of the 2004-05 NBA season.

And then it was vacant for over 10 years, sporadically being used as a concert venue between 2005 and 2015. In 2015, Johnny Morris was trying to decide if he wanted to buy the pyramid and turn it into a bass pro shops, so he said if he caught a catfish over 30 lbs, he’d do it. He did, and told his friends “It’s a deal, we’re gonna do it!”

I'm not from the US but I remember when I was in highschool that if anyone went to the US on holidays they came back with a Bass pro shop hat and a Columbia fishing shirt. As it gave people the status of "I can afford going to the US". I always thought it was just a gift shop trend from Miami, not an actual and huge brand as specialized as Patagonia. Interesting

You must not know much about liquor stores if you think a guy whose dad owned one came from nothing. Just to buy the business, not the building or inventory is hundreds of thousands to a million, inventory is six figures and then add in the cost of the real estate if you are not renting the building.

This reminded me of the hipster era of the 2000s where single-origin coffee snobs hipsters would avoid buying and wearing mainstream clothing, but they ended up looking all alike from miles away; the hipster beard, all-unique tattoos covering their body, single speed bicycle, acetate reading glasses or Ray-Ban sunglasses, the scarfs and beanie hats in the middle of summer.

I think theres another reason people like bass pro so much these days. There is no pretention to the brand whatsoever. Me and my gf are both pretty outdoorsy. We love hiking, camping, floating, and I love fishing and hunting. When it comes to outdoor brands there can be a big pretentious vibe to the people who wear it, especially with the big brands like Patagonia, north face, mountain hardware, arteryx, ect. We love bass pro so much because we can still get the clothing and gear we need for a fraction of the price and we don't feel lumped in with alot of people who wear all of these expensive brands that have almost become luxery brands at this point. We live in a very outdoorsy college town and those brands become very trendy where we live. Buying bass pro brands kind of makes us feel like normal people and we save money by not buying the big outdoorsy brands. We wear some of that stuff but the stuff we do wear from those brands we've had for a long time and we rarely buy new stuff them. We've also stayed at the bass pro pyramid and it's awesome

I think it's funny how people virtual signal about not liking Bass Pro when the liberal-coded alternative, REI, has an insane markup and poor customer service. In my experience, Bass Pro has more USA-made products than REI. You would think a company that virtu signals about being a co-op would want its products made in a more ethical country. Also, @MS-sr6mj, most hats come with logos, that style of hat is specifically made to have a logo. Unless you are anti-hat this is a silly question.
@woodchuck003
@woodchuck003 6 месяцев назад
@@smarmar400 I understand the insult you are getting at but it just demonstrates your ignorance on steak. No prime-cut steak is served plain, it is seasoned in pepper and salt, it is dry aged or dry brined, and its is based in butter. It is often served with a reduction sauce, something that contains tomato paste and vinegar, like ketchup. You ar trying to put down someone based off presentation and the cost of ingredients; unless the goal is to appear snoody this is not a great quip.
@smarmar400
@smarmar400 6 месяцев назад
@@woodchuck003 I live a blissful life, overflowing with ignorant knowledge of steaks, especially of the non-prime-cut variety. I am a connoisseur of steakery and of all fine, red meats. I consistently order my steaks plain so that I may savor the restaurant's choice of table ketchups. One simply needs to ask their waiter for the variety of tomato-based condiments from their "hidden menu". Every fine steak establishment worth their salt has one. But hear this: one must ask for the "hidden menu" thrice---not once---not even twice. It's an ancient tradition among steakeries. Below I shall include the universal code of menu-ordering conduct. It goes something like this: Three is a magic number Yes it is, it's a magic number Somewhere in that ancient mystic trinity You get three as a magic number The past, and the present, and the future Faith, and hope, and charity The heart, and the brain, and the body Give you three as a magic number Little-known steak fact: If you poke a cow many times with an ice pick before slaughter it's meat will be pre-tenderized and juicy on one's palette.

@@woodchuck003 They wrote that line because they know their audience is more on the "ironic gen z wearer" side than on the "redneck mecca" side. And probably their own inclination as well. It took an hour to get in, we spent three hours in it, my dad was stargazed by how much it changed and how big it became, all the non-fishing things there were... But then it took about 2 hours to get out of the parking lot. Then it would've been a year or two later when online shopping boomed and we never dealt with that nonsense again. I miss the days of Cabela's before it merged with Bass Pro. Cabela's started in Sidney, Nebraska, my home state. Prices were competitive, people loved the credit card program. To me, the thing that was done best, but was lost in the merger was the customer service call center out of Sidney. They were super helpful, and very friendly. Bass Pro got rid of that call center and customer service sucks! Also, Cabela's used to have a room in the back of the stores called the bargain cave, where they would collect all items that were at a higher discount than the normal sales they ran. It was awesome, but it seems that has all changed. I don't think Bass Pros improved Cabela's, instead, they ruined all of the friendliness you would experience if you traveled to Nebraska in the sake of searching for more money. Since then, I primarily shop at Scheels which is an employee owned private business.

I see a movement overall with younger (mostly liberal) people moving towards "appreciating" the more rural parts of the USA more. For example, the newest iteration of "indie sleaze" music is a lot about rural america and how it's cool (whereas before it was moving out to big cities and partying). Especially with WFH or remote work increasing (or even less jobs in more metro areas and being forced to move back with your parents or an area that is more affordable to you) I think we will see this trend continue, even if it's roots are in irony.

Great video, just a little disappointed you didn't mention the hat's recent hype in Latin America due to Fuerza Regida's song TQM. Really shows how language barriers can keep us away from understanding the complete extent of trends.

"If the Willy Wonka Chocolate Factory was a bait and tackle shop" is so accurate. I think more people go there for the fantasy of outdoorsiness than people who actually fish and hunt. TBH the only time I've ever held a firearm was at a BPS, just to kinda see what's the big deal.

I am legit curious. I've followed Future Proof for a good while now because I enjoy learning about how companies lie to & manipulate consumers, engage in nefarious business practices & generally hoodwink the public, but lately that isnt what youve been putting out. Instead its been hey, this is popular & were going to make fun of it without any factual criticism to back it up. In this video the objections seem to be an American (gasp) built a successful business through that nasty capitalism that appeals to people who are different from you. What happened to the videos with overlays saying "Its a scam" or "The truth about"? Is capitalism only bad when large, successful companies sell $5 hats but not when content makers hawk $25 stickers, one of which says stop buying things you dont need? At least a hat is useful. I like you guys & realize you no longer have as much time to devote to these videos, I'm just saying Wednesdays aren't as interesting as they used to be.

@flaval24
@flaval24 6 месяцев назад
@@sailoroftheinternet3290 I know the cost of everything has gone up so it may not be feasible if they want to make a profit, BUT I imagine if the stickers had been presented at $5 as well, hyped as an alternative for those not interested in buying these hats & the "stop" sticker was given a sly wink wink acknowledging the irony it may have resulted in quantity sales. Or maybe not, I'm just some stranger in the internet.

How can you mention the bass pro shop pyramid, and not bring up the fact that they didn’t actually build this thing, but instead took over this location in the city of Memphis had no idea what to do with it anymore. The history of that pyramid is actually pretty interesting, and when I was a kid I went and visited when it was set up as a titanic museum. I believe this was just a temporary set up and was around the same time as the movie Titanic coming out. Long story short, that whole building has been a whole bunch of different things and bass pro shop very likely got it on cheap so they could put a giant store inside of it.

I grew up in Springfield, MO going to the original store, and I always loved it. My sister still lives there and now works for a restaurant owned by Johnny Morris. She likes her job and gets tons of perks, including free/discounted entry to several other properties and a discount of course at bass pro. And it is nice, but when I went to visit her and everything we did was connected to Morris in some way, I couldn't help but start getting some real dystopian vibes. Especially with how much my sister gushed about how great Morris is. Dont get me wrong, employees at his properties have some great perks and benefits. And he seems like a more decent person than many other billionares. But he's still a billionare, and I started to get "company town- stealth edition" vibes when I realized the scope of things he owned and/or influenced just in the local area.

STOP CALLING EVERYTHING A CULT. “Cult” has a specific meaning. If you aren’t going to lay out how whatever falls into that definition, find a new buzzword. You cheapen the understanding of real cults and the credibility of your own work.

OK for real. I've always seen the Bass Pro Shops hat as a huge "I'm just a douche that follows trends and lacks any actual personality, please think I'm cool!!!" flag. You KNOW they don't fish, or hunt, or do anything outdoorsy. It's so cringe. Like 99% of people wearing Thrasher hoodies not actually skating.

Honestly, I am of the opinion that niches are having it harder the longer time goes on. The world becomes ever more connected, societies, groups and cultures get flung far and wide and mix together faster than ever before, and the same mindset that makes things like the cap appear on the heads of people that are essentially not related to the ideas, values and so on the product stands for will come for your particular niche sooner or later. And it will perhaps feel a bit like random people enter your house without permission, dancing on your kitchen table naked and then leaving through a giant hole in the wall of your bedroom they made that can never truly be fixed.

lol, The Bass Pro Shop is basically the mall in my town. I moved to Nashville for college for a few years, and was definitely a bit into the hipster artsy scene, so we all went thrifting a lot. I thought it was odd when my city-slicker type ex bf excitedly picked up a Bass Pro hat, but wrote it off as his flavor of "lol XD so random" behavior.

Maybe you could make a video about vinyl stickers that people put on their Nalgene bottles. Patagonia stickers, Keep Nature Wild stickers, Future Proof stickers.... Cool sticky plastic trash. Why do you have to sell vinyl stickers? If you have to sell something that nobody really needs, you should at least make it out of paper.

What exactly is the problem with people enjoying the outdoors in a way that isn’t serviced by REI? Why does hunting and fishing have to be denigrated as faux masculinity? Can’t someone have a hobby that isn’t yours? The constant putdowns of people who prefer to hunt, camp, and fish is tiresome.

The uproar in the comments about the stickers is kind of amusing. Yes, it's overpriced. The whole point is the money goes to support the channel/team making the videos. Instead of you just donating or paying a subscription, this way you get a little something out of it instead. No different than me paying $100 for a sweater from a RU-vidr I support.

"Cabellas if you're from canada" gives me a weird feeling. no shade to the vetting process, which can't be perfectly perfect. it just like activated childhood memories.
