And to add a bonus to that, o fele like the only time he’d mention skin color is with something like say bruised or when diseases cause weird hives or rashes. He’s more likely to ID someone via their eye or hair or blood type and height than friggin skin. It’s too broad.

Periods do suck but I'm surprised at how large of a stigma there is around it since, as you said, half of the population have periods. I've had them since ~10 years old but thankfully my mom taught me about them before they started. I actually saw the clip about buying pads before this and was SO happy. Main thing they missed was that pads are usually right next to all the baby stuff -_-

Yeah I was 8 when mine started. My mom was so comfortable with it though so I wasn't scared. I had a friend little one and she came to me for help she was so scared she didn't know anything about her body and didn't feel comfortable talking to anyone.

The most incredible thing for me watching baymax was how it made a show around healthcare without being ableist once! there was no push for people to be "healed", nothing was treated as temporary, Baymax's approach to healthcare being holistic and about the "whole" person

Same, started puberty in early 5th grade, and got severely bullied for simply having going through something that all of us eventually was going to go through.(bit wordy lmao) + it wasn't until 6th grade were everyone was already 12 and getting ready to graduate primary school, where we simply got a little brochure vaguely explaining what periods and puberty are. But they didn't even try to make an effort to normalize the discussion of periods among everyone, because they made it a hush hush topic that only the ~big girls~ were supposed to know.

I was nine when mine started too, but I was in 4th grade. I was already pretty severely bullied so didn’t really notice an increase in bullying-it was incredibly annoying when my class was split into ‘boys and girls’ and the girls had to watch an informative video on periods the next year. Turns out the boys just played basketball in the gym, too, so that seemed very unfair to my little kid brain.

I've been a primary school teacher for over a decade now and children get their periods from as young as 8 or 9. Considering how little control there is over reproductive and gynecological healthcare in the US I think it's heartening to see more positive content around periods and puberty as a whole. Baymax was excellent, and just the right amount of content per episode to stay sweet and charming

I remember talking about this show on Twitter and how stupid it is people are up and arms about it and actually getting into a well thought out conversation with someone about periods since i was a guy with little knowledge on the subject for obvious reasons and was surprised how much thought went into this one episode talking about it. people who complain about it clearly either don't know how the female body works or never had kids... or both.

When my family saw that people were being very mean to this show just because it had good representation, we knew we had to watch it. And we did. And its amazing!!! The representation was amazing, and I'm glad that things like periods are more comfortable for people to talk about in shows and movies and stuff! Same here, in my family no one is disgusted by periods. My mom always told me from day one that it's nothing to be ashamed of, every time I'm on my period my dad knows and he has no issue buying tampons or pads for me. It's confusing to see others make such a huge deal about it when it literally is just blood and a natural thing people with uteruses go through. It's in the same vein as just peeing or pooping, yeah we don't announce it to the world but if you say you need to pee the reaction is significantly different from just saying you're on your period and it's just so stupid

"Yeah, it's shark week for me..." etc etc., because I'll get stared at like I have three heads, or that people will awkwardly brush it off. Now, I wouldn't walk up to someone and blatantly announce I'm on my period, but if they ask me why I'm moody or look in pain, I shouldn't have to sprinkle rainbows and sparkles over the name. I should be able to be honest about it; "I'm on my period. That's why."

I don't think it's quite that normal More like it has become more common due bad diets (who knows what they are giving to chickens...). It also has become more common for young teenagers to grow their wisdom teeth earlier than past generations, so this is a generalized trend. when I first saw the scene with the trans guy in the pad/tampon section, I genuinely cried. I have a really rough time going into the section as a trans guy, periods are a massive source of dysphoria for me, and it doesn't help that people feel the need to stare down any man in that section. I'm very lucky that my mom is supportive and is more than happy to buy them for me, but I wish seeing men in that section was far more normalised. firstly because it is reality that many trans men/mascs still have their periods but secondly we need to normalise cis men buying these products for maybe their partners or even family members, pads and tampons are no different to toilet paper. that scene was just a massive breath of fresh are to see, it was just so lovely and felt so validating

Just wolud like to point out in Mbitas episode has alot of really deep messages about tradition. Even before he started flirting with a guy I had an idea of where it was going, from the family tradition of serving fish soup, witch he is allergic to, to a family of a husband, wife and baby interacting with him earlier on. I found it really deep and brave for a kids show, and it's the type of thing that might go over your head.

As a transmasculine person who dealt with not knowing much about periods and panicking when it happened to me at a young age, I'm glad they finally have the mindset to get both messages out there in a short, albeit maybe a little forced, moment of representation. I thought the series was adorable and I'm hoping to see more.

That being said, I should definetly make another account, never know when yt might decide to randomly terminate the channel for copyright infrigement, it's happened before on previous accs so that's the biggest discouragement for making more of them. Nintendo is merciless.

It's because Baymax doesn't make a big deal about it. These characters are allowed to exist and just be themselves without their entire personalities centering around their race, gender, sexuality, etc. And they are also allowed to embrace who they are, and it's not a big deal. They can just exist, live their lives, and be happy.

i'm a trans guy so the whole thing with the trans guy buying pads was neat. i guess it's kinda weird that he's wearing a shirt that's just straight up the trans flag because there's hardly anybody that would actually wear that, but it makes sense as a way to show he's trans and not just buying for a girlfriend/daughter.

To all the people who think that this show is awful because of that one episode that talks about p*riods (gotta sadly censor this so RU-vid won’t delete it): You guys need to realize that kids are gonna go through this (especially with young girls that will have to use, well you know). When you’re getting angry at something like this, then you’re getting angry at children growing up. If you really think that showing stuff like that is vile and evil, then I honestly feel very bad for your children or future children (if you ever have children at all). But again, I’m only 17 and kidless, so what do I even know?

I've never seen the show, but from what I'm seeing here, I think its really great and important the diversity is subtle (even with the trans shirt). i hate how in shows and other media, its usually (from what I have seen) so prominently shoved in your face. I'm glad its just. there.

I started mine around 11-12, maybe somewhere in between those two... but I had no real knowledge or education about it for some reason, despite my mom being a stickler about health and all that (aside from her telling me when I was like 7 adult women wear "adult diapers"), other girls my age I hung out with were actually the ones who got me curious in learning about it. When I started I somehow didn't care... literally all I remember was going "Oh, so that's happening now? Ok, huh" I told my mom and she just started me on menstrual products. I do wish I had been exposed to it more before though. I'm glad it's being integrated into cartoons and shows and stuff (that are family friendly) with intention of gently (or honestly) introducing it to young girls.

honestly when i heard people being really mad at an episode i watched the episode about the period issues myself, and as you mentioned the entire shirt of flag being its own debate there is quite literally nothing for people to be mad at here. i truly dont understand why people felt such a need to throw such a fit over a pretty simple bit of media that has a pretty good reason to exist.

I miss the days where i could just enjoy a pice of media without having to hear about outrage from people on twitter because of dumb stuff like "oh no they say the word tampon" or "oh no theres gay people in this thing" look people i just want to enjoy a tv show and if you want to take offence to it fine then dont watch it but dont drag others down to your level cus some of us know life is too short to deal with all that bs. If I ever made a show with LGBTQ characters then I would make am episode on someone random criticizing them for being it. The message being that you WILL meet people that wont accept you. That’s somewhat my problem with cartoons that does LGBTQ. I’m not saying that the jerk has to be a relative or side character it’s just that I think it’s unrealistic that there’s never a character that’s against that LGBTQ+ relationship as there’s always SOMEONE that’s against it. So Odaliah from the owl house isn’t homophobic that doesn’t mean that Luz and Amity wont meet someone that’s against their relationship just for both being girls. And yes I would make a point about ignoring this person but I wouldn’t ignore adding how such a person’s words may affect the characters a bit.

I don't think LGBT people really need to be taught that lesson, they already know it by heart... Fictional worlds in which their identities are only met with positivity are unrealistic, but they can provide comfort and escapism which is the reason a lot of people consume fiction in the first place. Also the 100% positivity shows are quite recent, in the past there were many stories in which the whole narrative arcs of LGBT characters (uf there were any that weren't walking stereotypes) were about how ashamed they were of their identity/suffering because they got rejected/etc

Psychonauts 2 does this, but they do it with a black woman instead of some trans peep. It's pretty good I'd say, Dr. Potts is the antagonistic force who stole research from Hollis Forsythe, and she tried changing his mind by force and drove him mad. It's a pretty grey area kinda thing, I'd reccomend it.

yeah I agree the trans shirt was a little on the nose, but I still appreciate they even thought of including a trans guy in the first place because I've always felt like talking about my period as a trans guy to cis people was a little taboo. we should absolutely normalise seeing men in the pad/tampon section, not just for trans men, but even cis men buying them for a family member or partner

Everyone in my maternal side of the family that can get periods all got them before 12, and we have the added complication that ours are all extremely severe (and completely undiagnosable so far. no one of us has a medical reason). I personally have had periods last up to 40 days before, though since I've started testosterone (trans guy) I luckily haven't had one.
