As a guy whos played a TON of basket ball I know what happened before I even see it. Tom went up to dunk (they definitely lowered the rim) and basically jammed the ball into the front of the rim which carried his legs out from under him. He probably snapped his arm trying to prevent himself from going face first into the wood.
