Unlike the brick and mortar business, GOTO rent their office spaces, I don't think the company invests in any significant amount of fixed assets. The company also doesn't invests on inventories or logistics, because that too are contracted out to other logistical companies. Since most of their employees considered part-time, they're not tied down to work in large office spaces, many GOTO employees WFH. So their valuation might be purely just the amount of their business and potentials measured from aggregated growth, and that's it. Supermarket chains, must rent spaces or own their own warehouses to store inventories, or keep their equipments, all of which considered as assets so it makes sense the company has larger valuation compared to GOTO. That is why GOTO employees receive more than Indonesia's minimum wage, and from middle to top management they receive more than the average Australian wages because the profit will be more equally distributed compared to employees that works in traditional brick-mortar companies. The downside of modern businesses well, you guessed it, entirely depends on its performance, and there's no safeguards if the company's market shares plummeted. You want to put your money on transaction account (as opposed to locked in long term deposits)? you get 0% interest rate and monthly fee, for half-wits this means you actually losing even more money than just inflation. You want to check your balance on ATM machine? admin fee. You use EFTPOS / EDC machine with different card than the bank issued machine? admin fee.
