How Big Is the Gap Between the Lakers and Elite Western Conference Teams?

With the Finals in our collective rearview mirror (maybe not THAT far in our collective rearview mirror but nonetheless in it), ESPN has its first edition of the 2024-25, admittedly way too early Power Rankings.
Of course, the idea of ranking teams now, when so much is going to change and we are almost literally as far as we'll be before anyone plays ball again, might seem silly. And it is, if you allow yourself to get wrapped up in the rankings aspect of it. It doesn't matter if your team is 1, 2 or 3. Or 7, 8 or 9. What's important is where you stand relative to other contenders, and for the Lakers they're a step behind. Right now that's perception, but it's perception based on tangible stuff. It should help crystallize how far the Lakers are from winning another title.
Because the Lakers, even if you think 15 is too low - this is where ESPN put them in their rankings - is still a decent leap behind teams like Denver, Dallas, Minnesota and Oklahoma City. What about Memphis? Sacramento? Those teams were both ranked behind LA.
And as long as we're arguing about team placements, what about player placements? Where do Lakers like Austin Reaves and D'Angelo Russell fit into the NBA ecosystem? Top 125? 100? 75? These are critical considerations, because were the team to lose any of the assets they currently have (i.e. Russell signing somwhere else with nothing coming back) they'd be hard pressed to find free agents who would be an upgrade.

People shouldn't get fooled by how close that Nuggets series was in terms of point differential. The Lakers couldn't close and a huge reason for that is that their best player was 39 years old and their second best player is inury prone. You will also have those nights where Anthony Davis is just not a factor, for whatever reason.

We'll be lucky to make the playoffs regardless. When you have a 40-year-old max player, something that has NEVER happened before, it makes it impossible to field a top-level roster. Ham gets all the blame, and he earned a lot of it, but until Lebron is gone, we are a 9-10 seed at best. Not LBJ hate, just a reality that a 40 year old cannot carry a team and is only effective 20-25 minutes a game. Lebron is the best 40 year old to play the game, but that doesn't win games. lol When he is forced to play 40 minutes, he has to rest on defense and things like Gordon getting a game winning rebound with one minute to play while LBJ stands flat footed will increasingly become the norm.

An upgrade to our guard rotation needs to be centered around defense. We need a defensive guard and shot blocking big more than anything offensive

In my opinion we could. If got by Denver would I strongly believe we make it to the finals. This ranking is objectively terrible. Purely designed to create content.

Denver hit two buzzer beaters on us. We were not that far away from being right there. Imagine if we had a bigger backup big to help man the paint in that series. Plus mjp doesn't miss wide open, or the most crazily contested jumpers against us. EVER

With all of the comments about forming another Big Three in LA. I was reviewing LeBron's previous Big Three. In Miami, won championships in 2nd and 3rd years. In Cleveland, won a championship in 2nd year. In LA, things didn't work out with Russell Westbrook. Question: If we did get a third star and it did work out, can we expect a championship in 2nd season with LeBron turning 41?

Luka and Tatum still ain't better than 39yr old LBJ😂😂.Luka shot48% regular season 46% playoffs,his phony 32ppg this season was on 24 shot attempts while LBJ was 26ppg on 18 attempts at 54%(thats six more attempts), Luka will never make an NBA all defensive team like other greats,he doesn't push the ball and he's doesn't cut well off ball. Spare me with the Tatum and Edwards talk...LBJ still does everything better than both them dudes.At 39 LBJ still led Lakers in points assists and steals... that's not suppose to happen.
