The military is definitely its own economy in the united states. I'm in the US Army and the amount of commerce and businesses centered around it is definitely uniquely American. @prubenazul150
@prubenazul150 3 года назад
American here. The big issue with insurance is that they pick and choose what they will cover even though your doctor says you need something. So you end up paying the total bill as if you don't have insurance. For me, I have a genetic disorder called lynch syndrome and have already had 3 different cancers (I'm 29) and my mom died at 44 die to cancer and she had the same thing. For private insurance, you have usually two max amounts you pay on top of what gets taken out of your paycheck every month. For me, I chose something with a low max deductible with higher monthly costs because with insurance denying my claims, and with the amount of times I need to go to the hospital every year, I can expect to pay my maximum no matter what it is. For me. I pay about $10k annually out of pocket not including what gets taken out of my paycheck just to have insurance. Again, I have to get annual screenings and biopsies and all of that not fun jazz. Colonoscopies and endoscopies every year. Fuuun times. I'm basically paying full price until I his my out of pocket max each year. If I was "normal" it would still be expensive but not that expensive. Probably lower monthly pay and a higher max deductible. Because the chances of hitting that max are slim...but heaven forbit anything serious happen and you have to pay for that max... American Healthcare is like gambling with your health. Which is why you see the joke of us refusing ambulances. Because it will cost you $6k even with insurance...unless you're already at your max...then take the dang ambulance LOL. But again, your insurance has to approve that it was necessary... For example. I need a procedure done soon that will cost $25k. Doctors want me to get it done, they say it's necessary. If insurance approves it, it will only cost me $6k (thats my max for out of network treatment). HOWEVER, I am fighting insurance because they are saying that it's not necessary for me and are against my doctors. (And yes, it's multiple doctors) So without my insurance approving it...I'll be responsible for $25k in full. For this reason, I cannot afford to have this operation done. So every year, I have to have more invasive but less expensive operations done instead of the big one that would fix me. The issue with the US is that if you are a part timer, companies do not have to offer you insurance. (Not free, you'd still have to pay out of your paycheck for it if its offered) So US companies will often avoid hiring people full time so they can avoid offering insurance to their employees. So to survive, people often have 2 or more part time jobs. Still no insurance. And to get private insurance on your own...its damn near impossible since the prices are marked up. Medicaid is for retirement folk aged 65+. Its very rare to have someone under that age on medicaid. You'd have to be on some serious welfare (got program) and its very hard to qualify for it. Another thing about private insurance is that they can deny you for a pre-existing condition. So without my job, I actually cannot get private Healthcare because I have lynch syndrome.

Medicare is for older Americans. Medicaid is for those with lower income. Some states, like Washington, supplement the costs so they can offer Medicaid to more people. Our son was born with severe disabilities and was on Medicaid his entire life which paid for his medical bills during times we were uninsured and bills not paid by our primary insurance when we were employed (like co-pays and deductibles). Also, according to the Department of Health and Human Services, since 2014 insurance companies haven't been able to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

One of the big reasons healthcare is so expensive here is that the healthcare system is SO over regulated, hospitals and doctors have to spend HUGE amounts of money in compliance costs. No CEO wants to pay 75% taxes; there's no motivation to invent anything or offer any kind of service when the reward is so low. There's a reason why California's GDP is greater than the entirety of the UK. It's because taxes are relatively low, so there's actually an incentive to expand their companies. For example, while it is true that there are military researchers studying about how dolphins could be trained to search for underwater mines, they actually represent a small part of an entire field based marine biology research within their disciplines. They take a very strong 'all data is useful' approach and you might enter the Navy thinking you want to be on a boat and see the world but end up a marine biologist with a specialty in fresh water algae.

In the US we invent most of the world's medical equipment and we have millions of people who don't pay or can't pay their medical bills, and that includes illegal immigrants who use medical facilities. If the US made the change to socialized healthcare for everyone it would blow out military spending. The US spends $610-$750 billion/ year on the military. If we switched to socialized healthcare it would cost over what the current US budget is every year which is $4 trillion and would likely double it. Also in the US, most people who don't have insurance and need medical attention they $100-$300 depending where you live, for urgent care, or they go to the Emergency Room where you cannot be denied and if UI cannot pay or don't have insurance the State covers it.

It was a whole 45 minutes. Hear that Europe? My friends from Canada (who adore their service) said it would be 10-14 days if not a month before they'd get a scan. Germans and Brits wait weeks for procedures and scans Americans can get same day or a couple of days - before COVID at least. Why do the Arab royal families fly to the US and even pay for operating suites to be free 24 x 7 for them on demand should a family emergency arise? They want American surgeons even though their hospitals are worldclass. Premier of Quebec ditched his entire national program and went to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota when he had a life-threatening condition. Why to European football stars fly to Vail, Colorado? She was highly deficient in B12 and D2 vitamins and $25 worth of pills would have prevented her agony for all those years. She confronted her doctor back home and he said they were not authorized to run basic nutrition blood panels! When my Dad was a medical student, his hospital in Texas has 15 MRI’s. The whole country of Canada at that time had 2. 2) increased wait times to see a specialist: In Canada, a 2017 report in the Huffington Post showed that residents of New Brunswick are waiting an average of 41.7 weeks to see a specialist with their system of universal care. In the US it is just 24 days. 3) often sill requires private insurance 4) puts the government in charge of healthcare. 5) care rationing.

You always hear about how it costs $20 to get a box of tissues in a hospital, or $30 for an aspirin. That's because regulation is so overwhelming and insurance so overbearing that doctors spend a huge majority of their time dealing with regulation and documentation, and not with treating patients. Combine all that with the fact that the US essentially subsidizes medical and pharmaceutical research for the entire rest of the world, and there you have it. We pay out the nose for new medicines, while other countries essentially just allows other companies to steal patents and create generics immediately, or they have such stringent requirements on what medicines can sell for that these pharmaceutical companies sell new medicines to these countries for pennies on the dollar to what they sell for in the US.

@@kaluminati731 Bruh. What kind of medical research are u talking about. It's either an invention such as a drug or a device WHICH is patented and most of the time earns way more from licensing the patent than was spent on such discovery. Companies in breach of this first have to deal with their own countries laws and in the case where the country supports their companies stealing patents well what good does that serve? Those products will then never find their way to the US as export due to breach of patent. If it's medical research as in biology, anatomy then guess what. You can't patent science. You do not fund this kind of research to make profit. You fund this kind of research to make advancements in science and make understanding of the world around us - in medicine that would be more precise understanding of diseases and all biology surrounding that. In that case you can't steal science. Science is facts that you uncover during research. We could then say that the US is just leaching on the EU in other fields as they have been crushing the US in particle physics for decades now. Also the funny thing is. You mentioned that US contributes the most to medical research globally right? It's quite paradoxical due to the fact that they have the money to do so. Imagine a situation where the US was the worlds 2nd largest economy, lets say behind the UK. Since medical research is a necessity those who CAN afford it will contribute. In which case UK would most likely be the one contributing most to medical research. US is only contributing more because it has the money to do so.

@@mairisberzins8677 there's the economic issue of first to market pricing. Big pharma in the US accounts for a significant chunk of drug research and the US is first to market with these drugs and companies make back their costs by charging the US consumer. It allows them to negotiate with other countries more effectively on pricing. In a lot of cases countries don't care about US patent law and they get cheaper drugs that way. The US consumer ultimately pays the upfront costs and R&D costs. That's a huge reason for the costs of drugs in America. Also, what you stated isn't paradoxical at all. It's basic economics. The only way sectors can grow, including the medical sector, is through capital investment whether it be through private or public means; something the US has spent lots of money on for decades. The US is in the position to put the most money into it because it has paid for the infrastructure investment. This is the same reason why China is becoming/is a scientific powerhouse. It should be noted that your statement that the US is leeching off of European particle physics for over a decade is flat out wrong. True, the world has gained a lot of knowledge from CERN and other placed in Europe but the US still has the scientific infrastructure that makes the US a world leader and ranking models have still put the US first followed by China. Recently, $100 million in grants were approved by the Department of Energy for this specific type of research. You also forget the United States has many private research companies doing this kind of work as well. If you come in from ambulance you get seen right away, if you walk into ER you get seen quick enough but if someone has more severe case they go ahead of you regardless how long you wait. The worse thing about American hospitals is they charge you for a ton of money and without insurance its a lot of money, and if you don't come up with a payment arrangement they want they will try to garnish your wages quickly so they can get their payment, which might leave you in financial troubles of your own after you leave the hospital. They weren't talking about how much the government pays, they are talking about how much individuals pay for healthcare overall per capita.

The US has Medicare for people over 65, Medicaid for the poor, and CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program) for kids under 18. Everyone else either has to get insurance on their own, or through their employer, or risk they can cover their health costs without insurance. It’s a stupid system. The public health system of Medicare which is the most like the NHS has a lower cost structure and covers everyone over 65.

We also don’t have socialized medicine which I’m thankful we don’t. In Canada, you might have to wait months for an operation that is needed. That’s just ridiculous
@tomb7088

The US also subsidizes other countries heath care. How? We allowed drugs to be invented (cost deducted off on taxes) here and sold overseas for less than they are sold for here. The VA is socialized medicine and it is an absolute train wreck. Also, the NHS has much lower levels of care and people in the UK, as you mentioned, that can afford private insurance do, and that should tell you something as well. Also, with certain programs the government decides what it will pay for procedures. This means that private insurance has to make up the difference. Nothing run by government works or is economical.

@@cocalita03 what stats and what are they saying otherwise. I agree with you that the taxes are extremely high which is why I said people would rather keep their money than give to to taxes and pay a premium price for good health care... the only way where is Americans could have a working system like in Europe is if we dismantle it completely which is a terrible idea, and even then we might sacrifice the quality of the health care afterwards. I believe we are on the same page just worded it differently.
@cocalita03
@cocalita03 3 года назад
@@M2161 Most Americans favor single payer healthcare and yes, the entire system should be dismantled. Every year healthcare costs increase (premiums, deductibles, other out of pocket expenses) and the quality is only okay. We already sacrificed quality years ago. I would argue it's gotten worse in the last 20 years. We already pay a lot of taxes for things that don't get done (infrastructure/healthcare/education etc). I would rather that money go to something like a NHS instead. At least then you could actually see your money working. Right now we're being robbed and all I see on this comment section is platitudes about quality and the "best" medical treatment which is such crap. It is all very dependent on which areas you live in, so if you're rural you can just forget about that access to the "best" doctors.

We may spend a lot on health care, but I'd much rather do that than deal with the NHS. My wife is from London and they've nearly killed her three times because she can't get anyone to take her case seriously. She's been stuck in the UK since international travel shut down. We may pay for healthcare, but you get what you pay for. The NHS is awesome, but I really don't want them here.
