A taller tire will roll further than a shorter tire rolled with the same amount of force. A taller tire will generally lower your rpm vs a shorter will raise your rpm. Usually when you excessively widen your wheel setup it i.e. going from a 9 inch wide to a 12 wide it will significantly affect your rear end ratio performance

We used to call it a poor mans overdrive. We had muscle cars with 4:11's and wanted to drive 150 miles away so we would put on taller tires to get the RPM's down. We also used to put shorter tires on for shorter races.

The GM B body cars from 77-79 had a 2.76:1 rear end from the factory. From 80-90 they had 2:56:1. Of course there were special order differences. I had a wagon with a 2:29:1 and police cars had 3.73:1, for example. The final drive ratio is affected by the tire diameter. You established that. But the reason you need to change your rear end when you put gigantic wheels on you car is have to get your RPMs up to where the driveline was designed to run. If you’re running a huge tire, your distance travelled per tire revolution is much greater than the factory tire size. When you travel a farther distance per tire revolution that drops your engine RPMs. This will cause problems with your transmission if you have overdrive and is will affect your shift points regardless of what type of transmission you have. Your comment about manual transmission vs automatic means nothing. It is only affected by the final drive ratio in each gear. Third gear in a th350 is 1:1 but by comparison 4th gear in a 700r4 is .76:1. A six speed tremec has an even lower ratio in 6th gear. All that to say your math is probably accurate, but some of your details are misdirected.

4L80Es are good but you're gonna pay for that $$$$$ its better to put power in lighter cars cause heavy cars with power costa a lot cause youre luggin around a lot of weight making big power but peole do it. Its just a lot of money and even they break rear ends etc too. This car is gonna go pretty good with the 4 10s But yiure right. This has me rethinking an AOD in my fox body zephyr and just use a gear vendor on my C4 and build that up with a trans kit its about all the same price and I get to keep my column shifter

"How ta calcalate dat".... And PLEASE stop saying big rims will change your gear ratio. The only way to change a gear ratio, is to actually change the actual GEARS in the rear end!! Big rims DO NOT change the gear ratio. Since big rims have a larger circumference, they DECREASE the number of wheel revolutions needed to travel the same distance as a smaller/stock wheel. The gear ratio is still the same, but that ratio produces different results depending on the wheel size. If your vehicle is running 4:11 gears in the rear end on stock wheels, it's still running the same 4:11 gears when you upgrade to larger wheels. It's just, those larger WHEELS make 4:11 gears produce different results. Hope I explained that well enough.

Great way to educate about swapping gears for increased tire size. I always go one gear lower due to the increased weight of the wheels. So if it calls for 4.10 go 4.30. Calls for 3.90 go 4.10

People use automatic transmissions in racing applications all the time. Check out some products from TCI for example. There are 700+ HP packages designed for racing. Depends upon the application, racing regulations, and/or preference but to say an automatic transmission is not for racing isn't a true statement. Video is informative..thank you for sharing.

FACT..... Anytime you mess with any part of the drive train. You should definitely get your drive train recalibrated. There is a formula already set for the car. But one you for up or down on wheel size. It would behoove you to get it sown correctly. This video is definitely on point. Keep running the car and the adjustment hasn't been made. You will blow that transmission. Your engine's rpm will run high and you will blow the motor. Good informative Video. Each one Teach one!

I totally agree with gears but a 4l80 is pretty much a 400 turbo with a overdrive!!,Change that big ass 100lb converter 9" preferably and transmission cooler and the 4l80 is what I ride with !!
