@@yugijoe97 I know but companies like fandom buy all the shows so they have probably taken Dan's name off because they want to keep the show going if Dan leaves saves them any legal issues in the future.
Shazam!'s box office performance is an absolute tragedy. That movie deserves better, and the arrival of Endgame is only going to hurt its prospects further.
@MrGonzale09 Box Office Mojo has it at around $320 million. Like they said in the video, that's not awful for its budget. Still, Shazam! deserves better, and I really hope that DC doesn't feel discouraged from making more movies like it.
@@DavidLew1 I don't think you have to worry about a sequel, I'm pretty sure a sequel's already reported to be in the works. The movie wasn't too expensive, WB will breakeven, and a little more, in theaters and make its profit in streaming and media sells. If Shazam 2 has the Rock, that could boost sells for both films with people deciding they want to see part 1.
@@peterpidrak9501 Well, three tones actually: Human!Billy drama, Super!Billy comedy, Dr. Sivana horror. But for the most part the horror is subdued enough that it gels well. The exception being the minutes spent early on with the Seven Sins eating the board members screaming in terror - leaving out the blood that should've covered the whole room for the rating's sake doesn't make it any less scary. And the Seven Sins never even try to take a bite out of anyone again - neither Billy's foster siblings nor any nameless bystanders! Doing the scene that way (to hammer home how dangerous the Sins are) in a kids' appeal movie is utterly baffling to me; the way they look and speak is plenty creepy enough to establish them as mighty monsters.
1monk True, but I also remember seeing an ad in Variety soon after the release of “The Mask” about how New Line had exercised its option on Jim Carrey and was starting work on a sequel with him.
it's been a good Wednesday and good Thursday - I can't wait for the numbers to come out on Monday I also wonder if this movie can do whatever it takes to: Hit $1 billion worldwide (Hit $1.1 billion worldwide and debut at #1) Surpass Avatar in earnings over it's total run The international box office numbers and their records (countries other than China) might be interesting to see. (India, Italy, Germany - not only the weekend but opening DAY results. -> www.boxofficemojo.com/news/?id=4506)
Normally I'd watch it on opening Thursday, but since I only watch original language showings and this is one of the rare cases that warrant an IMAX screen, the earliest option in reasonable driving distance is next Tuesday. I managed to avoid spoilers for Infinity War, I'll manage again.
Dear Fandom Entertainment, it's Charting WITH DAN :D Oh and... I'll stop going on twitter starting wednesday... until I've seen the movie on friday. :3
I’m glad Captain Marvel was able to increase 6% this weekend and pass $400M before Avengers: Endgame came out. Will likely get a 2nd or 3rd place boost when Avengers: Endgame opens next weekend.
Infinity war made 840m and endgame destroyed it in hype,to give you a sort of look of how massivr endgame is it didnt just break starwars presale record off 100m,it did twice in both china and north america,so the record is right now 130m in NA 115m in china 100m for TFA Endgame is gonna make a billion worldwide
One of my local cinemas I patronize is showing Endgame on sixteen of its eighteen screens on Thursday. It starts every thirty minutes. Dolby Cinema, IMAX, 3D, and standard digital projection. I’m seeing it three times in the first twenty-four hours.
1. My parents had to buy tickets for next week because they can't find a seat for Endgame this weekend. 2. A bunch of theaters around me are showing Endgame through midnight every day. 3. The only seat I could get this weekend starts at 9PM. So I'm going straight from Endgame to watching GOT on demand. 5+ hours of pop culture conclusions here I come 😍
Dan Murrell is by far, THE most trustworthy film critic around. I hope he reads this because it’s not that his opinions mirror my own, it’s because it’s clear to anyone who watches him that he’s honest and cares. Where some critics are quick to spout out their grade for a movie without question, it’s obvious Dan truly wrestles with his thoughts and criticisms from all aspects before he gives his opinion.
in some theaters there is a double billing for both. Where Infinity war is going to show right before endgame. But that's just for the very first screening
Forget money... Id like comparisons based purely on *butts in seats.* Besides inflation, theres the difference in ticket prices... both geographic (e.g LA/NYC vs Small Town/Middle America) and type of theatre (e.g. Regular screen vs IMAX or 3D)
I get whole Shazam is scary for kids thing. I took my 7 year old who doesn't scare easy but it upset him. Not just the monsters, when Billy's mom admitted she left him and didn't feel bad about it, he almost cried.
I keep up with everything on this channel (you all are great), but I gotta say Charting With Dan is probably my favorite segment to watch. He's always looking into things that I wouldn't think of, and putting numbers into perspective and context for us. =) Thank you to Dan and everyone who clearly works hard behind the scenes too.
To what you guys talked about for theatres expanding their operating hours to accomidate for Endgame. My general Manager at AMC already has pushed our closing hours over an hour later in order to show 11pm + showtimes for it, on top of showing a new screening of it every hour from when we open in the morning. So I think it would be safe to say that many theatres will be doing the same thing.
I would like to say maybe too much light or from too many angles you guys look pallid, in the name of the show is Charting with Dan not just charting sorry had to join in
I just saw Dan on " The List". That caught me by surprise. Very cool Dan. (no I usually don't watch that show, I was at my neighbor's.. and I looked to my friend and said " hey, it's Dan", like I knew Dan personally)
@@FreefallSC A tv show. An entertainment style one I guess. Kinda tv junk food. The type of show just before the prime time shows. (it was on at 7:30 pm here in Michigan last night)
My local theater in Seattle is starting showings of endgame at 7/8am Friday morning and a new showing every hour. Honestly it's insane but I'm so excited
I can confirm the "Shazam is scary for kids" thing. When I saw it (early access), a young boy sat next to me and his father/uncle/whatever sat with him. Every time the seven sins demons showed up, the boy hid his eyes and begged the adult to go home. But as soon as the demons left the screen, he was back to enjoying the film again. But this happened at least three times that he begged to be taken home.
In London we’re having the last Avengers showing of the day going in at 2:00, coming out around 5:30, and then the first one for the “next day” goes in at 6:00. That’s at least for the opening 4-day-Thursday-Sunday weekend. Then for the next 10 days the last showing goes in at 0:40 and first one goes in around 8-9 the next day. Considering our usual schedule is, first film in at 10:00, last film in around 12:00 during the weekend and 23:00 during the week, they’re definitely trying their best to squeeze as much money as they can out of it.
I live in China and, I dunno why, we got Endgame yesterday. There were some midnight showings Tuesday night (our time. Monday in the States). Do those extra days apply to the opening weekend?
My take, going just based off the theaters around me, Endgame will easily be the highest opening weekend ever. Every single IMAX showing from Thursday till Sunday is either completely sold out or only has one or two seats left. Not even Infinity War or The Force Awakens did that. This weekend is going to be an event which I’m doubtful we will see again, at least for a very long time.
The theaters in Louisville doubled the screens after I bought my tickets a couple weeks ago. It's showing every 15 to 20 minutes. In Chicago my family says it playing until 3 a.m. and starting again on Friday at 8 a.m. The A:EG opening will be epic!
Well here in NYC they’re screening endgame as late as 4:00am and as early as 6:00am. If you check to purchase tickets, these screenings are about half sold.
I'm one of those that watch videos and never like them... but I'll always like Charting because I realize it's niche. In a world of canned promos and click-bait, a nerdy, calm discussion of facts is a rare and glorious thing. A++. Would listen to Dan talk about numbers forever.
I'm interested to know do all movies in the US open on the weekend? I'm from Australia and typically most movies here open on roughly mid-week. So Endgame will be opening on the 24th (23rd US time). Just curious to understand if that means that the Aussie market by default doesn't get factored into any "global opening weekend" Box Office figures?
I really shouldn't have bought my Endgame ticket for 11pm right after Game of Thrones on Sunday. Both of them back to back can't be good for my heart. :D
Dan, could you explain how a double billing works? I watched Infinity war followed directly by the world premier of Endgame - does the ticket cost gets divided and attributed to the revenue of both movies - can we expect IW numbers to increase? Or does all that revenue count for Endgame only?
one flaw in the thesis that big part of the boxchart for endgame is not the presales - many people who did not get a ticket already will not be able to see movie this weekend. Screenings in Poland start tomorrow most cinemas are practically sold out for the first few days.
This is crazy. I'm in Tenerife, not a big city in Spain. I got two of the last few tickets for Friday at 7:30 pm, which will be like the 5th or 6th screening in that particular theater that day
Awesome Cornetto series t-shirt Dan! I'm not a "huge" Edgar Wright fan, but those 3 movies are untouchable for me. And Hot Fuzz is one of my all-time favourites
Thanks, Dan and Lon! I know I'm speculating here, but I have to wonder if, on top of parents warning other parents about the scares, if younger families just ignored "Shazam!" because they needed to save that money for "Endgame." Going to the movies as a family is so expensive, you have concessions to think about, I know many children love the Avengers having grown up with them, and I bet many families are treating this as an event. "Endgame" is just too big a priority for many young families for them to try and see another superhero movie right now. Had "Shazam!" slotted itself into August, it still would've been facing a tough battle against "Hobbs and Shaw," but it might've done better as it would've been well away from "Endgame." "Shazam!" is also more of an obscure, long shot IP like "Guardians of the Galaxy" was back in 2014, so I have to wonder if WB should've just pushed it back. Oh, well. Perhaps it'll do gangbusters on streaming. Again, thanks, Dan and Lon! I can't wait for those juicy numbers on next week's "Charting!" Best!
Thank you for explaining how pre-sales are counted! I have been wondering if the “Endgame” ticket sales are attributed to the time of the purchase or to the time of the movie screening.
Well, it turns out that 35% jump for Deathly Hallows Part 2 and Revenge of the Sith was just about right, since $350 million (the projected domestic opening for Endgame) is almost exactly a 35% jump from Infinity War's $258 million opening.
A lot of multiplexes will definitely be piling up with Endgame screenings. Ours is showing it every hour from 11:00am to 10:00pm, which means at least three rooms are focused on it. I would think cities with larger cinemas would certainly be doing that as well.
My theater usually doesn’t premier the Marvel films until 7p on a Thursday. My ticket is for 6p 1 hour earlier than normally aired. So, I do think theaters are offsetting their times and expanding their hours.
So I checked out Gavin Feng's twitter (thanks Dan). Seems like pre-sales in China is gonna be over 100 mil with midnight screenings more than double Fast and Furious.
Yeah I went with a 7 and 8 year old and they got super scared during Shazam! especially during that office scene with the throw out the window (vague sentence to avoid spoiling for anyone) so I'm sure families were saying not to take young ones for this superhero movie
Wahooo, I'm french and here movies open on wednesday so we usually have them the week after you guys but Endgames opens tomorrow here ! (I'm watching it on preview tonight ;) ) Can't believe we'll have a Marvel movie before the US !
It's gonna do amazing here and everywhere else and at the same time and with no competition and with hype and finale spoilers and that's never happened for a saga I never truly thought about it that way. Dan, you're truly an overseer.
Sometimes I wonder if I am truly masochistic. I am very/extremely dyslexic, yet a numbers show about box office totals is my go to weekly enjoyment and eliminates all the BS that Monday's usually bring.
This may be a dumb question but I just wanted to clarify this a little; when you show the world wide gross that is in addition to the U.S. gross too correct?
The theatre I usually go to premieres movies on Thursdays with showing starting at 7. Endgame’s showing start at 6 so they definitely are trying to accommodate for the run time.
In terms of theatres accommodating for the longer run-time, there are some theatres that are showing the movie at 4am. If Endgame doesn't make 1 billion dollars in the first weekend it will probably make it by Tuesday as that is a cheaper movie day in Canada and possibly other countries as well
The fact that you guys don’t load you vids with ads shows that you’re a true g. (Either that or they demonetize you which I don’t see why they’d do that 🤡)
I think they will offset long runtime with more shows, as you said. There are shows at my theater starting at 7:20am. The earliest I've seen shows starting ever.
I think it's obvious Shazam is hurting because it's coming out before Endgame. A lot of 2019 America is selective on how often they'll either A) be bothered to go out to the movies and B) spend that money. They should have done a February release
Endgame is going to break all the records. Marvel has achieved something never achieved before in the history of cinema with over 20 interconnected movies coming to a conclusion. End game will definitely break 1billion worldwide opening.
And maybe a double record blowing opening in both china and us,both are gonna make above iw domestic record and both have a strong possibility to open at 300m....thats insane.
Yeah, when film-gross-takings are being compared in the future Infinity War and Endgame really are in a different category - they are the equivalent of the penultimate and final episodes of an entire year-long TV season rather than 'a film and it's sequel'. It really won't shed as much light on relative performance to compare other future film takings to "the Infinity War records".
I saw Hellboy this last weekend and then I watched your review. You are absolutely correct. I was blown away that it was just so scattered. There were parts where I was like, what the hell is happening.
I went Saturday to see Shazaam based on your recommendation and I really enjoyed it. Too bad there were only 10 people in the theater with me. I thought from the trailer it would end up being cheesy, but it actually had a really good story line. I think the second will do better once people see this on DVD and realize it's actually good.
What happened to Roth? I haven’t seen her lately and i’m Not caught up with the recent news of screen junkies other than the rebranding of channel. Can anybody get me up to date on the Roth news?
Great charting! This is my favourite show on YT. I like Lon, however I really enjoyed the gender balance with Roth as a co-host. Will she be returning?
