How Bossa Nova’s robots track inventory at Walmart stores 

I can help answer some of your questions with how it was supposed to work pre-robot. Walmart works on a POS replenish. That means that when you purchase a product it marks it as ordered. If the distribution centers are stock and this product is a single unit item the story would be over. But it is not that simple. Some items must sell the whole case in order for it to be reordered. Walmart has "Buyers" these people are the people who get the best prices possible, so you can get the low price. When these Buyers find something at a really low price sometimes they must buy the whole warehouse of inventory. This creates force outs. They send pallets of product that will not fit on shelves and must be place in the back awaiting an opportunity to be sold (Remember this). Walmart does not make their store brand products. They are done based on bids from name brand companies. Sometimes these companies will after getting the contract will offer Walmart buyers a great deal on their name brand product. If Walmart buys this offer, the producing company will withhold some of the store brand to give their brand named product a chance to sell (Why you don't see store brand on shelves). Another issue is if it is an item that is frequently stolen it is not going to be entered into the POS system, therefore not reordered until some one corrects the outage and on hand in the system. Sometimes this occurs when the inventory is finalized. Many years ago when I started at Walmart I did the job of this robot and did it faster, The position is called ICS inventory control specialist. Every morning I would pick or be assigned a department usually somewhere in grocery. I would walk down the aisle and scan all the outs. Then I would print the items I scanned, and check to see if they were showing as in stock. If in stock I would find these items and get them on the shelf. Sometimes items are not available at the DC distribution center. If this is the case someone up line did not do what they were supposed to do. End story, Walmart is not able, willing or maybe does not know how to fix it. The later would be my guess, that is why they have these inefficient robots moving up and down the aisles.

Some items must sell the whole case in order for it to be reordered'''''''''''''''…………….………………………………………………………………………………...at the Walmart near me I haven't seen Blu Bonnet margarine for 8 months : that's not a matter of reordering because in 8 months the store must have received a new shipment of Blue Bonnet margarine and if a new shipment wasn't ordered that's the manager's fault : he is supposed to walk around and write down which items are running low on the shelves : there are two brands of ice cream that I like and I haven't seen either one in 8 months : many weeks there are no GV French fries in the French fry section at all...…………………………………………………………..can you explain this?

@@robinsss Yes, If there is no shelf labeled space for the item it has been discontinued in that store. You are partially correct. The manager goes to ICS and department manager for explanation as to why there is an out. The shelves of each store are laid out by corporate. There are setup by a planogram. The department manager has to set the shelf just as it is on the planogram. If an item is discontinued corporate send a planogram for the replacement.
