Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley's approach to combatting modern offenses will likely spread around the NFL in the near future. Staley's time as defensive coordinator with the LA Rams proved that his scheme can be successful in the modern NFL, so today, I'll take you through where the elements of Staley's scheme come from, why they are effective against modern offenses, and why more teams around the league will soon look to adopt some of those elements.

Todd Bowles runs something similar. He uses what is almost a 5-2 defense. Instead of gap and a half, he often lets the NT play 2 gap while everyone else plays 1. The nose, VIta Vea, is so strong that he can generate pass rush while playing a 2 gap nose tackle. Since the OL can't climb to engage the linebackers, the 2 ultra speedy Bucs ILB's can run and make plays, coming in tied for second in 2020 in tackles for loss. If Vita Vea didn't miss most of the year, they may well have had the top defense. He is the best player on that defense. The dude is terrifying and so few people know who he is.

The scheme actually works pretty well because it makes the reads in a zone run kind of useless. The hole that the runner hits isn't actually open because the defensive tackle/end can pull both ways. The only way you could reliably beat the front is with a double team from a fullback or tight end or a chip block for outside runs.

I was like wtf after the Staley hire. I wanted Dabol or Beienemy from KC. After listening to him multiple times and what people said about him including Ramsey showering him with respect I let my gaurd down. Ramsey respects very few people and always gives a honest assessment of what he thinks about someone. And all I kept hearing was well you dont have Donald or Ramsey to so the same thing the Rams did when he made them the 1# defense. I expect a high caliber defense but, not 1# I just want him to be able to squeeze every ounce of talent out of this current roster. If his scheme truly is what people say then it only gets me more excited. Gonna be a good first test against Dallas top WR core.

Great speaker, extremely motivational and a great coaching job week 1 although still got a lot to prove. I'm glad they passed on the Bill's and KCs offensive coordinator, hell neither of them got HC jobs which is almost insane to to think about but no one wanted that dumpster fire job down in Texas for now anyway until they get 3 1st round picks for Watson.

@@SouthernBrick That plan still has to show results. I think Herbert can still get the most out of his pass attack but if he's still gotta make magic out of 3rd and long situations, that isn't beneficial. We've seen all that crap from last season with another conservative coach/play caller. Many people probably think Herbert still has take his lumps in year 2 but I think the Chargers aren't putting him in even better positions to win key situations and dump points. And with the AFC West, besides the Chiefs the Raiders have demonstrated they can dump scores fast if you let them.
@SouthernBrick
@SouthernBrick 2 года назад
@@t4d0W Drops and penalties has held back the team in the redzone. 1 TD dropped by Guyton in week 1 that came down to 3 points and Chargers have some how upped the ante this season by erasing multiple TDs. The field goal I'm gonna let go. I felt like if he doesn't hook that kick slightly it gets blocked and the game gets way out of hand. Kicker had a good game. Lost by 3 but, Chargers shot themselves in the foot. Theirs gonna be growing pains on both sides of the ball.😩 New offense along with a entirely new offensive line besides Bulaga and new defensive scheme guess I should've expected it.

This video was so fascinating, I love logistics and when you were describing the type of players this defense needs it almost sounded exactly what most Hybrid 3-4's have. I'm not a technique guy like most youtubers here, be it you, Brett Kollman, or Jackson Krueger Sports. I go by size and style, and the bigger the range in size, the more hidden gems you're likely to find in drafting/free agency, imho. What I love about the Hybrid 3-4 is that it has the ability to incorporate EVERY SINGLE defensive package there is, be it a nickel and dime that can look just like a 4-3 type nickel and dime (instead of 4-2-5 it's a 2-4-5, or instead of a 4-1-6, it's a 2-3-6), or the many unique packages that already come with 3-4's, be it the classic 3-3-5, the modern 3-3-5 as I saw in this video (and what I noticed the Packers started doing in 2019), 3-2-6, 2-3-6 with 2 ILB's and not outside, 1-5-5 Psycho, and one I haven't seen yet and would love to see for the sheer madness to it, the 1-4-6. The Hybrid 3-4 can literally take ANY player and make it work, unlike a pure 3-4 needing more 3-4 type players, or a 4-3 needing 4-3 type players. The Packers are a great example of this even under Joe Barry, our OLB's are the size of a typical 4-3 DE, they're not the kind of LB's I would send back in coverage, the NT Kenny Clark isn't even 320+lbs. (I consider 320+ to be the proto typical sized NT so as to take advantage of O-linemen as much as possible, like double-triple teams), our ILB's include guys that are almost as lightweight as oldschool SS's like Kam Chancellor or Roy Williams, instead of big dudes like Brian Urlacher/Ray Lewis. It's the kind of defense you can look at and say, there are so many guys like this in college, why spend 1st round picks on a front 7/6 guy? Run stopping DT's between 285-320lbs. are so common you can literally wait until Day 3 in the draft to find a hidden gem, aside from Clark, all of our DT's are either Day 3 guys or undrafted. ILB's? Look how little value has been placed on ILB's, one of our starters was an undrafted rookie last year in Krys Barnes, at 229lbs.. Excluding Rashan Gary, our Edge Rushers are Day 2 guys or undrafted. When you consider the logistics when scouting college players, where are you more likely to find hidden gems? Not in 260lb ILB's like Urlacher, not in 285lb. Edge Rushers like Julius Peppers, and certainly not 1 of a kind DT's like JJ Watt, Aaron Donald, Suh, or dare I say the late great Reggie White? No, you gotta find the most common type of players coming out of college, and they are what I described on the current Packers team. It's all Logistics, finding the simplest route to your goal. It's the same thing you were describing on what Staley is doing, finding the simplest route to a goal in not just stopping the run, but stopping the pass, and building the team. And ftr, the way you were describing this defense, ALMOST, keyword ALMOST reminded me of the most basic play in every Madden Game ever. In the oldest Madden's it's called Man Lock, in the PS2 Madden's it's called 2 Man Under. What the play is, is SO simple. The CB's are on Man Coverage on their assigned WR's. The Safeties are in 2 deep zone coverage (not to dissimilar from that play you showed off on 14:55), it's a consistent 4 man rush no matter what package, while the LB's be it 3-4 ILB's or 4-3 LB's in general are ALL in Man Coverage, but they react to the ball and play given that LB's can blitz and cover at the same time. So imagine a modern 3-3-5 the way this video showed, using 2 Man Under, the lone ILB can either stay in coverage if there's a RB sneaking out or a big TE, or blitz if they're BOTH in a block assignment, the CB's stay on their WR's, while the Safeties obviously react to the play exactly the way you showed, all in the meantime there's a 5 man rush on the QB or RB. As a matter of fact, it's what the Saints did to Aaron Rodgers (somewhat) that utterly destroyed the Packers! The Saints simplified their defense instead of sending exotic blitz packages. They just maintained a 4 man rush and kept dropping everyone back in coverage, daring the Packers to run the football, and for some reason there was nothing A-Rod could do about it. A simple play like that can neutralize the most complex of offenses, and I find it hilariously, ironic. TL;DR, the simpler the defense, the more you frustrate opposing offenses.

Thank you so much bro. I enjoy vic/Stanley philosophy on defense. And your attention to detail is excellent. Any thoughts on 3high defense?

It’s basically a bear defense without being out manned by outside zone. This has been around for years, WVU with Jeff Casteel ran it in the early 2000s. It just became popular when it began getting called the “tite” front. It was always called Steeler by them because the Steelers were doing it years ago. You did a great job explaining this and I enjoyed it. Great content.

This is totally awesome!!! A great breakdown of a defense!! I love it. Please do more🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾 maybe Nick Saban’s Alabama Defense or Chip Kelly’s Oregon Offense. Dude maybe break down how the College football game is now in the pros

Love that we got him. I hang on every word he says during interviews in ways I couldn't believe with Lynn.

7:05 that's pretty much exactly the Steelers defense of the early 2000s with Casey Hampton, Kilmo von Oelhoffen and Aaron Smith at the line and Porter, Gildon, Bell and Farrior. The only difference I can think off is that the Smith and Oelhoffen, the Ends, would play head on on the guards and play 2 gap. Just like Hampton would do. Later Hampton would play shaded though. I was watching the Rams game this week and it looked exactly the same. Except they played 1-gap defense.

Great content, and what’s funny is the 3 down line with 4i’s is getting a lot of traction in college and below thanks to mainly Dave Aranda’s tite 3-4 and Iowa State’s 3 high safety tite 3-3.

Saw this before the draft and love it. Rewatched this today, after draft and free agency are far behind us. The Chargers’ choices in draft and free agency…seems like they plan to use the 404 a lot in 2022. They have the players to rock this scheme.

Billy, Please do a video on the Brady vs Belichick game from this Sunday night. Belichick was doing some very interesting stuff like 7 DB personnel groups & 2 man Pass rushes dropping 9 in coverage
