My two favorite Brian Eno accomplishments: 1- the album My life in the bush of ghosts; a collaboration with David Byrne. They put music on different oral items like talk radio host, a call to prayer, an exorcism. It’s from the early 80s and it’s been a favorite of mine since then. 2- the second thing is not music, but a set of cards; oblique strategy. When you’re stuck in a creative process, you pick a card and do what it says, in order to help you have a different perspective on your project, and therefore get unstuck.
@EricHadleyIves

So glad you mentioned “My Life in the Bush of Ghosts”; an outstanding album. If you can, try reading the book that inspired it, as that is also something to experience, and offers insight into the album as well.

Bravo, Stella!! You are so joyfully enthusiastic, knowlegable and diverse in your (Music) Encounter series. Hot Stuff, Baby!! Starting out with Brian Ferry's Roxy Music was HUGE, especially popular in UK, a bit in US with 'Love Is The Drug'. Eno's Electro-Punk sounding 'Baby's On Fire', played on KTRU Rice University underground radio station in Houston back in about 1976, was def his breakout session. Playing with Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera on guitar and crew, Eno contributed as a writer, and his personalized 'Mood Setting' style really came to the forefront, 'Somber Reptiles' being Subminimally Superb. Excellent (yet not 'Pop" ular in US) instrumental collaborations continued with Latin Beat oriented and Venezuala based Manzanera to Rock Latin America. Fair, David Byrne & Eno RULE. A Real Pioneer, Brian Eno eventually morphed into the Outer Stratosphere of The Inner Ear Ohm with his trademark Ambient Excellence! 🎧🔊

Good overview, Stella, and I love your energy and your hilarious asides. Brian Eno has long been one of my favourites. Music For Airports is my number one go to album when I need to de-stress and give my mind space to clear and think. I also love the dark richness of Ambient 4: On Land and the spacey, floating feeling of Apollo: Atmospheres and Soundtracks. The fragile minimalism that hides a deep complexity on The Pearl, which he did with Harold Budd, is also extraordinary. Eno has collaborated with another of my favourite artists, Jon Hassell. It would be interesting to hear your take on him in a video. Anyway, keep the good work; your videos are well informed and insightful!

The year is 1993 . No digital sales of music, no downloading. Most people bought music in a store. I heard about this album, and went to get it. They said they didn’t have it in stock, but would order it ( on cassette!) and let me know when it got there. 8 WEEKS LATER, I got a call.. “Music for Airports is here”..😮 went and got it… totally worth the wait…

When asked what is my favourite album, I always say Brian Eno's Music for Airports (I purchased it when I was eight years old). Years ago, there was an art installation at an airport, Chicago O'Hare. I don't know how many hours and how many days I spent there listening, and watching. The music, and the visuals, the art, has deep resonant effects, on those who can perceive them.The installation was by Brian Eno. The music was Music for Airports. As I've said before, Music for Airports works quite well in a Metro station in Paris, as well. I have all of Eno's albums. He is wonderful. Thank you, Stella! What have I done with my life! :)

The day my father died (just over ten years ago) I made the whole journey from my workplace to the hospital where he was hospitalized with "1/1" in mind, while I kept repeating in my head "Dad, wait for me.. . ". Arriving at the intensive care unit I found my mother in front of my father and after about 5 minutes the monitor gave the alarm; my father was gone forever. Since then every time I listen to "Music for Airports" I relive that bad day like it's a movie.

Nicely done. Brian Eno looks great in purple, I must say. Cool to mention Steve Reich, I remember playing “It’s Gonna Rain” and driving my room-mates crazy. Also, I was going to suggest Bang On A Can’s cover album of Music For Airports and I believe you showed them playing briefly. The AI aside was interesting, that faux-R.E.M. artwork DOES look like an old R.E.M. album. We’re trying to get ChatGPT to help us with our new release title! And thanks for inspiring me to listen to a ton of Eno’s ambient works because it had been awhile. Made me think of Stars of the Lid. And I have to say, the end of your videos have me cracking up.

It's interesting that you mention Midjourney here, because I think that some of the most interesting AI art ive seen has a similar philosophy to a lot of ambient music, especially the more hands off approach of letting chaos unfold in a way that winds up beautiful.

Favourite album is a very difficult choice, Another Green World, Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy), Plateaux of Mirror with Harold Budd, Before and After Science and On Land are all up there though. I guess my favourite at any time depends on my mood, that’s true for any genre of music I think.

The album Eno did with Harold Budd " The Pearl " is one of my favorites of the 80's .. so quiet & atmospheric. Harold also worked with The Cocteau Twins on the lovely The Moon & The Melodies. Eno is awesome 👌 doing Remain In Light By Day with Talking Heads & My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts by night with David Byrne which is my second favorite of his albums. Have a wonderful evening 🌙

Hey Stella, nice video! Regarding your comments toward the end about enjoying transitory/liminal locations encountered during travel, I would highly recommend checking out some music by the modern ambient artist Celer. He weaves together highly emotional drone music and field recordings taken during travel in a way I find quite profound - his catalog is absolutely massive but I recommend checking out the albums Xièxie and Tempelhof first since they best represent that kind of sound :)

It wasn't until a few years ago after introducing the neighbor across the street to Roxy Music's Avalon that I realized how vast Brian Eno's influence over the music I listen to actually was (even though he had left the group by then). Talking Heads Remain in Light (1980) might be my favorite Eno produced album, but David Bowie "Heroes" (1977) ranks high as well (although he's not the producer on it). Also, The Unforgettable Fire (1984) -- I saw U2 play San Francisco on that tour. Awesome show.
