How Brussels lost it's river, and where you can still find it.

Brussels, in old Dutch, literally means, the house on the Swamp. For centuries Brussels struggled to control the Zenne, the river meandering trough its center. Yet, when you visit Brussels today, there is no river to be found in the city, let alone a swamp.

Brussels is such an interesting city, thanks for making such a great video about one of its many fascinating stories. On a side note: there are currently plans to resurface the Zenne in the Maximiliaanpark

There is also a part of the Zenne in the city which is not covered up. It is near Sint-Gorikshallen.

Yes. We actually tried to film there, but the entrance to the parking lot where it's located wasn't open to visitors. :( As I understand, its a part of the original riverbed that got restored together with the building above it. It is not connected to the actual river however. It's a real pity we couldn't film there, because in a way, it's a mirror image of the Zenne in the museum. That one is the actual river in a new riverbed, while the part near Sint-Gorikshallen is the original riverbed, but no longer the actual river. Hopefully, after lock down, we will be able to visit that part of the Zenne again.

I lived in an apartment of the previous monastery with the bedroom window overlooking that small part left of the zenne (although I think it is a cut-off segment of the river). Before you could freely access the courtyard of the complex, now you have to make an appointment…. Place Saint Gery, on the side of Rue de la Grande Ile…

There are a few spots where the river surfaces and you can see parts of it in the Brussels Region, one is in rue Bollinckxstraat in Anderlecht, a relatively quiet street in the midst of an industrial zoning. Also in Anderlecht along the Boulevard Paepsemlaan in Anderlecht, still industrial zoning, along bus lines 49 and 74, where a walk path has been built along the river banks. The Zenne then continues along the Anderlecht-Forest border between two main railway lines into Brussels-South station, which will be openend to the public in the future, but for now is virtually inaccessible. And finally in the north it surfaces between Rue du Rupelstraat (behind Schaerbeek station) and at the backside of the colourful incinerator-cum-energy-plant (Google Maps gives the street name as 'Leeuwoprit), which are unfortunately the only places you can see it from. An honourable mention should go to the Parc de la Senne/Zennepark near Brussels-North station, nothing to see of the river itself, but it follows its flow between Bd Roi Albert II/Koning Albert II-laan all the way to the Rue des Palais/Paleizenstraat. Its quite neat, a haven of peace and quiet in a busy city. Before and after Brussels, there are purification station on the Senne/Zenne, so it doesn't stink as much anymore, and you can follow most of it almost right until the end, just before Mechelen.

The house I grew up was on the banks of the Zenne (a little too close, which is why we moved), just outside of Brussels. You could predict the weather just by the smell of it. It's hard to explain, but it was rather accurate. We knew if it was going to rain or be dry the next day.

0:43 Controversial opinion here, but the berlaymont and other buildings around le rond-point are pretty neat looking.
@are_we_there_yet
@are_we_there_yet 3 года назад
Ah, it's actually not Berlaymond, it's De Brouckere. We wanted to show parking 58, but that building was so ugly and useless, it's already demolished. 😀 And the butchering is not so much what they build, more about what they demolished to build it. commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Centrale_Hallen-Halles_centrales_(foto).jpeg This beautiful covered market got bulldozed, to make space for the parking. (also we used butchering because that was the actual job of Van den Boeynants 😜 )
