In this episode of Bus Driver Life I show you how we deploy and stow the wheelchair ramp on a 2015 Gillig BRT Plus bus. You will see the designated areas for passengers with mobility devices.
We will also see what the DOT ADA(American Disabilities Act) says about a few FAQ’s concerning wheelchair passengers!

Some of the drivers in Longview Washington will put out the ramp for people who have carts with groceries without asking.

I just started driving city buses in Knoxville, TN and found your channel when I was in training still, love the channel dude. I agree, it can be very frustrating when people just expect you to read their mind lol

Bus operator in MN here. I've had a passenger yell out to me on a training run one day because I could not find the hooks on his electric scooter. As we got on our way and my trainer helped secure him in, he realized I was new and we had a good laugh about it, but it's still crazy how different these chairs can be and how much of a pain it makes it to hook them up safely. Love the job, love your channel. Thank you.

When I was a kid, I thought the kneeling switch and the ramp switch were the same, so after kneeling the bus all the way, it would deploy the ramp. Also, it's hilarious how impatient car drivers get when I deploy the ramp. I once had a car driver blow their horn, then get in the left lane and blow the horn, then drive up to the front left corner of the bus and blow their horn. They looked so angry.

Our wheelchair ramps are purely manual. We have to leave our seat and lift the hinged ramp out and back in. Tends to slow things down a bit.

Our 2010 and 2012 and Gillig BRT 35' and 40' foot buses have one long wheelchair seat, and 3 hooks. Here our drivers are required to ask the passenger with a wheelchair if they want the shoulder strap/belt, and they call it in to dispatch. "Run xxx to base Passenger declined the shoulder strap.". Our 2020 Gillig BRT 29' units have the same style of fold up parts and the folding sanction/rail as your BRT's do, just they are all plastic seats, wheel chair strap area is the same as our 2010-2012 models, but the part the strap goes into is a little different. But great video! Very interesting that your Gillig's don't do the loud beep like when they kneel down with the wheelchair ramp like ours do.

You missed one key thing. On those buses, its better that the wheelchair user go backward up the ramp. It makes it easier getting to the 45 degree turn and into position.

What a interesting video I never new so much to put a wheelchair on a bus. As a bus driver in uk we just put the ramp out wheelchair gets on close ramp we don't secure wheelchair or anything they do have 1 designated wheelchair area.

Some of my coworkers have an issue with deploying the wheelchair ramp manually if it does not work remotely. I just care about getting the people where they have to go no matter what it takes. 🤷🏽‍♂️

i used to live near a system that had rear door boarding and front door boarding for wheelchairs and had spaces for up to three per bus. also i have in the past when ive had a lot of luggage used one of the wheelchair spaces so that my bags were not being a hazard as the securements used included a built in seat belt for a wheelchair passenger that are also handy for securing large bags XD

We do it old school! Ours are manually flipped out by the driver. I have to secure the bus, get out of my seat and flip it down. We do have wheelchair hooks, but I prefer to do it by hand as it's quicker. I don't mind as it gives me a minute to stretch. Some buses sadly aren't very low, so I have to also lower the bus before exiting my seat. Our disabled seats are just a push up. No button. Customers are responsible for securing their own wheelchair, pram etc. I had one run which had very tight timing points. I had a wheelchair, a walker, a man with a cane and quite a few elderly people who took a while to find their seat. I was down 14 minutes by the end of it and the traffic was fine! If I see old people or larger people, I automatically lower the bus but don't deploy the ramp unless requested. I also try and pull up the bus really close too. It's funny though: Some very elderly people basically spring onto the bus and some younger folk have limps or other mobility issues that aren't apparent when you initially pull up. Appearances can be deceiving!

In some of my videos, i do point out the wheelchair ramps. At my organization (VALLEY METRO), our wheelchair ramps are at the rear door, and we do a 4-point tie down, but the seat belt is optional and you must verbally ask passenger if they want the seat belt. I personally use the ramp if the passenger verbally ask for the ramp or the passenger have walkers or scooters as well...

I like your vids man. I signed up for a city transit job in Philly. Waiting on my background check. I drove for greyhound for a while, now I want something local. Ready to see what this city transit is about. Have you ever drove a 45ft motor coach? OTR? I wonder what the difference between city transit and OTR coach. People wise.lol

I’ve never done OTR but I did drive 45ft MCI coaches on commuter routes at my last job..they were actually super easy to drive. The turning radius was excellent too...I could easily make tight turns.

As bus operator from Australia 🇦🇺, we cannot read the passengers mind unless they request. I too experienced similar lady with suitcase, I already lowered the bus and oh man ...she say almost the same things as you. But the funny thing is ...when she got onto the bus she walk all way to back seats with a few steps up. When she got to hear destination rather than exit the back door she walk all the way to the front door. I calculated it takes her about 2.15 minutes dragging her suitcase. People can have altitude problems...please keep up with more clips.

Yeah, I feel you man. Nowadays, there these Karens in America like that lady, Suitcase Karen, Wheelchair Karens, Bus stop Karens, and other ungrateful Karens that you will meet in the future. I use access link in New Jersey as I’m disabled with access link I’m able to take my shopping cart on the bus it’s so convenient the drivers are very helpful and patient sometimes a passenger can be difficult you have to register for the door to door service and the interview you get and the results determined your need for the service I’ve been riding with access link 5 years and I love it

Interesting your emergency parking break is opposite to ours here with B.C. Transit. Ours apply by pushing down and pull to release. Good video man. 👍

Where I live when you deploy the ramp it will say caution ramp is moving please exit thru the rear door. Also one time I was getting off a bus I almost go stuck on the bas because the doors got locked when the driver started to take off . It was on a type of express route. It wasn't express but it kind of was. Because the route takes off as soon as the passengers get off then get on.

Regular Bus Passenger here (Not in California, but in Canada), and huh, I never knew that about those handrails, all I know is that it's generally best to clear out of the seats and go further back on the bus so that the wheelchair or scooter user can have the space they need ehe. Eh, I'm not a wheelchair user, but I have sometimes gotten onto a bus with my fold up cart, at times laden with items, and now and again, I'd ask the driver to lower the ramp (especially on those community shuttle buses), but...well, there've been times where they'd say "no, these are for wheelchairs only, pull it onto the bus yourself" As much as I hate to say it, I have sometimes complained about those drivers, especially the ones that run the Girardin G5 Minibuses (seriously, how can they expect me to bring a fold up cart full of items up a buses' stairwell?) It's like they don't feel like it or something..it infuriates me especially when they're running the ARBOC line of buses, because the switch to do it with is right on their console...what gives?

As much as I despised driving low floors, the flippy ramps were fantastic. The lifts on our MCI coaches were rubbish, and never had the luxury of having the lift in the stairs à la Neoplan.

Wasn't just a neoplan thing.. Flxible and Gillig have used lift in the stairs as well And yes Flippy ramps are awesome, I wish more cutaway buses did this rather than the stupid Braun lifts

Ok that is kinda hightech on the Gillig ngl. Here in Denmark we've had it absolutely horrible with wheelchair accessibility. Copenhagen in particular being abysmal due to a really poor policy. So here on European buses the wheelchair ramps are on the middle door, not the front, as the space between the front axles are too narrow and the space by the driver too small to turn around a wheelchair in, according to handicap regulations. But anyways, the bus transit agency here, Movia, has had a policy for the longest time AGAINST automated electric ramps, only allowing manual ones "Because the electric ramps will create dangerous situations in traffic for cyclists on the crowded bike lanes" which is a stupid excuse. On top of that, they don't allow drivers to leave the drivers seat at any point mid service "because a maniac could come in and take control of the bus while the driver is distracted and cause a terrorist attack" (their words not mine), and so for any wheelchair user to use the buses here, they are entirely dependent on other people, whether it be a friend of theirs needing to assist them, or random passengers on the bus. The handicap represensative in a TV interview literally said "If you don't have anyone who can deploy the ramp for you, you can't ride the bus then". Its only earlier this year that a few politicians in Copenhagens municipality only went through with an agreement that all new buses to be used in their municipality has to have electric ramps after the media scandal last year. But the bus agency still has yet to make that more widespread across their network, which covers most of Eastern Denmark and serves about 2 million people, over 1/3rd of the country's population. Also like here in general the setup is quite different besides the middle door ramp. Like the wheelchairs are secured with the back towards the front, rested up against a specialised cushioned support in the flex area. A secondary railing can be deployed on the side towards the center isle for protection from harsh turns. And beyond that is just a single strong one point harness.

our ENC axess BRT feature longitudinal seats in a set of 3 plus 1 fold ups, on each side. this allows us to have two mobility devices. hooked in, and the plus 1 seats can still be down making it pretty quick to fold up the priority seats and get a mobility device latched in.

Our ramps here in Brisbane, Australia, are manually put out by the driver, there aren't any switches, ie: the driver physically leaves his seat to put the ramp out. We don't have straps either to hook on the chair, and frankly I know with my chair which isn't a typical wheelchair (the manufacturer doesn't call it a wheelchair), doesn't have parts to hook onto. Personally I prefer to just hold on with my own arm, as from my perspective if abled bodied passengers don't need to be strapped in, I don't want to be strapped in either, equality reasons.

What happens in Sacramento if there is no available securements for those with mobility devices? In king county metro I believe they have to call dispatch and let the passenger know why they’re being denied boarding and that supervisor has been notified. If it’s a long wait they’ll try to get a paratransit vehicle to assist the passenger. Last time I’ve seen this there was another bus right behind so obviously that was the best way to

I had the same bus driver complain to me twice about my wheelchair because it doesn’t have the tie down points you see on most wheelchairs. Mine you have to tie it down to the frame of the chair and the bus driver was just too lazy. She told me I can’t use the city bus because of that. My mom called and complained because I obviously am allowed and most if not everywhere let’s you use both para transit and the city bus. I take mainly the city bus because I don’t like the high floor para transit buses but it’s good to know I have the option to use it if I ever need to or want to for whatever reason. I also find it really funny whenever I’m transferring from one bus to another the operator on the first bus refers to just my wheelchair and not me

In Australia the ramps are manual so we as the driver we need to get out of the seat to deploy the ramp.

Can you post more videos about the proper use of the ramps as the bus drivers in owen sound caused me to be trapped today they need more drivers who know what they are doing to train people to be safe

i have gone above and beyond to help my passengers.. there are some patrons, however, have tried to abuse their wheelchairs by packing their "thousands of bags", and they're pushing their wheelchair to the bus stop, expecting to get on the bus.. My organization have put out a message on the clever stating the operators are allowed to deny boarding simply because they they are using our system as a "U-haul service"...

I will say people who use 3 wheel shooters feel bad that people have to loses their seats and don’t want to bother to ask someone to give up their seat even though it would be safer for them especially on a crowded bus .

Have any of your new buses have the wheelchair go in the backward position to be locked in electronically? Fresno California has the type of backward seat locking system? Great video.

I really appreciate you showing how you operate all of the wheelchair accessibility features on your bus Keywan. As a wheelchair user I have never used a public transit bus yet in my life, I have only used school buses up until I graduated in 2017 from high school. Also I really appreciate how you are willing to lend a helping hand if a wheelchair user does end up needing extra assistance like picking things up off the ground like you explained in your video. However the only thing that concerns me about your buses in your transit fleet is that the wheelchairs spaces only have three point tiedowns instead of four point tiedowns to help secure each corner of the chair. I hope in the future your transit company that you work for reconsiders ordering new buses in the future with four point tiedowns, to me I think it provides a better grip and a more secure a ride for the wheelchair user. Throughout my years using wheelchair using the chair accessible buses I have never seen a bus like this with a three point tiedown system, to me that makes me feel like it could make the wheelchair still feel a little unstable when taking a sharp turn. But otherwise great video man!

I definitely hear you! 4 points would be much safer. The last company I worked for required 4 points but some companies only 3. The interesting thing is…there are a lot of wheelchair passengers who actually do not want us to strap them down…or they only want 2 out of 3 tie downs. Fortunately we don’t transport without 3. Also all buses have the option for 4 tie downs..just depends on what the company orders. Thanks for watching!!

What I planned really annoying is when drivers do not know where my clamping points are because they aren’t marked with those carabiner hook symbols but they are pretty visible they’re silver and I’ll use the front hooks to reference the backhooks for you so that you can locate them okay maybe if I come up to Sacramento I’ll see you bye

I know nyc the MTA we had has a acres a ride & the passengers that qualify will allow a PCA to ride the train and free as well as them self will get a free 4 ride per day . As far as denying service for wheelchair passengers unfortunately their are drives who will say the ramp is down or won’t bother tying down the equipment in fear of covid .. I will say most of the drivers are amazing with the exceptions of a few bad apples.

It works different in the UK (at least in London where I am from) It works like this, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KUWISliVcsI.html On buses with 2 doors (dual door) the wheelchair ramp is at the back of the bus, but on buses with a single door the wheelchair ramp is at the front and makes a very special sound! Also if you need the wheelchair ramp there is a wheelchair request button nearer to the back door of the bus if it is double door. The request button is also for strollers as you call them in the United States but I haven't see people used the ramp for strollers in years!

The bus company that you worked for. Do they have new buses that are now electric? The bus company in Silicon Valley called valley transportation authority has electric buses now.

Valley metro (RPTA) has it to where you have to turn the ramp on and then you have to get your butt up OUT of your seat and walk to the back because the ramp is at the back doors where the ramp deploy switch is at , which i must say is annoying because that alone takes up 2 minutes especially when these people want tie downs , so then you have to fold the ramp up then go back to your seat and put your seatbelt on then turn off the ramp power switch and then release the parking brake and then set the transmission back to drive, seriously some of our buses WILL NOT move until you turn off the power to the ramp in the back up front loading wheelchairs is NOT fun at all

Well the rear interlock is set so the door can be opened.. it doesn’t necessarily have to be physically open…if that makes sense.

At the company that I work at,, we have a mandatory 4 points of contact. I wish I could use my phone at work. We have to have our phones off and put in our bag when we're on the bus and if we use it we could get fired.

I have to be honest that some older people could be a pain in the butt and some could be very rude and cranky for no reason. The bus drivers in Chicago don't assist the wheelchair but in other cities, they would. I never seen them ask the drivers in Chicago for assistance. I told a lady that she dropped something and she said that I'm a real gentleman then I should pick it up and I said that I don't touch people's property without permission but please don't disrespect me at all.

I have a question so what happens with the new busses where the floor slide out from the middle of the floor what do you do if it gets stuck?

Call it in to dispatch. I’m not sure what bus you are referring to. But my job had older NABI high floor buses in service a few years ago with a lift at the front door. It would occasionally not deploy out, would deploy out but not lift, or depending on how heavy the wheelchair and occupant was would stop half way up. Anyone of those issues I would not be able to transfer the rider and would call it in. Our policy is as long as another bus is coming within 30mins and the weather was decent, they will have to wait for the next one. If another bus won’t come in 30mins, we will send out a Paratransit Bus to take them to their destination free of charge. But now all of our buses are low floor with ramps. If the motor doesn’t work, we can manually pull the ramp out and back in if needed. No longer requiring passengers in wheelchairs to be denied unless 2 wheelchairs are already onboard.

I use access link and when I shop I bring my cart the driver deployed the lift I get on it with my cart he she secures the cart and they strap me in I've had other passengers give the driver orders to take their groceries out and I thought it was awful some people are just ignorant

Oh, when it comes to the 3-wheel scooters, the passenger must verbally state that they will transfer to a seat.. we cannot force them to get out of the scooter..

I was injured today by being attacked on bus and the bus driver in owen sound caused my walker to be be trapped under ramp and injured me he also allowed other passenger who was violent screaming abuse and she made threats and she committed assault battery also thr french company that owns the buses and the drivers in owen sound are a danger

Not gonna lie, I've never been on any Gillig BRT models. I've only been on the LF models, 35ft and 29ft. I've never been on a 40ft model and these are only diesel fueled buses I've been on, no hybrid or CNG. I've never seen the wheelchair ramp in action on any Gillig buses. Here in Chicago, our wheelchair area has a special component that specifically locks wheelchairs what you manually push or roll the rear wheels. There is also a seatbelt there too, but never seen any drivers use it. The seats have a yellow strip that functions as a stop requested bell and it rings the bell twice instead of once. I don't know how Pace's wheelchair area works because I barely see it in action. But what about transit systems that has a wheelchair ramp at the rear door?

I have no experience with rear door ramps or lifts...seems like that could take longer than being in the front but I’m not sure.

@@BusDriverLife youre lucky you never dealt with rear door ramps and trust me it DOES take longer , just imagine loading a wheelchair then 2 stops later another wheelchair then the next stop one of them wants off.. its that many time you must get out of your seat and lost 2 minutes each
