The game having integrity in this context means fans and gamblers believe the results are real and not manipulated that is a direct impact on their money.
@@Kinogotiate Well yeah, but that's the thing: they only have to create the perception of authenticity and integrity. Now I'm not saying they haven't been authentic so far, but if it happens -- and it almost certainly will at some point -- where an All Star level player or even a coach or owner is not only betting on games they're involved in but also manipulating it, the NBA will almost certainly focus on some kind of cover up and keeping the perception of integrity rather than prosecuting it fully and changing the rules etc because to do so risks blowing the whole thing up and killing the golden goose. I mean there's too much money now in gambling to not have guys start taking risks, especially super competitive types like athletes. And the higher salaries today are irrelevant when it comes to that.
It's the gamblers. Especially now it's the gamblers believing the games aren't rigged. The top concern as far as fans are concerned is maximizing entertainment for the top markets + fanbases. That's why it's a priority that the Lakers, GSW, and LeBron be in the playoffs, and no one cares about the Jazz or Grizzlies making it
@@gf4670Gambling has always existed and we haven't ever seen that. The penalties are clearly stiffer then ever. Really, did Tim Donaghy blow the whole thing up? He got banned and went to prison.
The people using bet gm aren't barred from betting per their million dollar contracts. I'm not sure why you can't make that connection. Total Jontay Porter IQ.
I don’t think gambling and drugs are the same threats to a league. If I ran the league I’d let guys come back if they get clean and sober…. What porter did is malicious
@@kdevinturner8778 Thats fair. I just find it moronic that the leagues themselves condemn gambling for their athletes yet every single sports league damn near is sponsored by Draft Kings or some other betting site.
I don’t believe it’s hypocritical at all. Many NASCAR drivers are sponsored by beer and liquor companies, that doesn’t mean it is hypocritical that they didn’t want their drivers to drink behind the wheel
Do you believe he's the only one ? All the pro sports leagues are swimming in the gambling pool , then act shocked when someone gets caught. No one should bet on sports, the house wins 84% of the time, keep your money in your pocket.
Lions cowboys playoff game in Dallas as I watched it was clear & present that the officials refs responsible for the safety & integrity of the game were not going to allow Detroit Lions to win in Dallas against cowboys
What about the scandals in the early 60s? Many players got banned from the NBA including the great Connie Hawkins. And they did not get into the NBA until they went to court.
Giving somebody a lifetime ban and then leaving the door open for a reinstatement is one thing if the reason is drug or alcohol related, but when the reason for a “lifetime” ban is literally a direct action against the integrity of the game, then that’s something totally different. I can understand if the NBA gave Porter the shoeless Joe Jackson, Pete Rose treatment.
Fans who are mad about the ban don't understand the implications this. If NBA don't do anything about this it can be detrimental to the game as a whole. This thing is also illegal in football.
I just checked in and Dan goes in on the Lions/Michigan. Did anyone bring up the Lions and gambling? Yes, my dad watches this show just like all old people
Want to hear a good one? A congressman gives a government contract deal to his buddy. Then he buys stock in that company. Then the news announcement is made, and he makes a boatload of money. However people who hedged (bet against) the stock lose money. How is that different than an NBA player giving confidential information to a bettor, and manipulating the results for his own benefit? Answer: the first one is legal. Unfortunately we care more about our sports teams than we do about those who make the laws and govern us.
As a bonus, the congressman gets kicked back money in the form of campaign donations, and he uses it against his opponent by smearing him with negative advertisements. And we stay distracted…
What'd be interesting to see is if someone gets caught backing themselves a la Calvin Ridley. I imagine the punishment would still be substantive, but how much less than Porter would be interesting to see.
There is a difference between being banned for gambling and being banned for violating the drug policy. Whether or not he is officially banned for life, he is effectively banned for life because no team will want anything to do with him.
These gambling platforms might have moree integrity than the leagues do, as soon as that changes, which it will, it will hollow out professional sports, maybe almost kill it
NHL playoffs in full swing. And ol Dem dan is beating the tired nba drum. You know, I love Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. Alot of people do. Maybe Dem dan could shake things up.
Adam Silver said," “There is nothing more important than protecting the integrity of NBA competition..." yet the NBA continually encourages betting on specific players and games. In a desperate move for more revenue the league also set up a trash tournament allowing teams as bad as 30 games below .500 a second chance to get into the playoffs.
They need to sell the Raptors. That org is a dumpster fire. First they're stealing plays from playoff teams still ending in the lottery and now they hire bums to ruin the integrity of the league. Close it up for good.
I mean his brother got the huge bag and idk why this dude would do this like cmon. I mean sure his bro money ain’t his but I’m sure if he wanted some nicer stuff here or there, his brother woulda got him but wtf does this dude need
Really really stupid for Jontay to do that. I understand that he doesn't make as much money as an NBA player that's not in the G-league but risking and losing your 400k salary for bets in the 10ks (I think he only won 20k in total after making all those bets, lost a lot) is beyond stupid. He's gonna have to continue his playing career overseas. BTW, I wish the NBA would crack down this hard and fast on players involved in domestic violence & illicit relationships with minors (*cough* Giddey) like they just did with Jontay on illegal gambling
What set off the investigation was a $80,000 dollar bet placed on Jontay that had a payout of $1.2 million. The person placing the bet was someone Jontay knew. If they had kept the bets small and not gone for a homerun the books wouldn't have been investigated. I'm sure anytime a book has to payout $1.2 million their fraud department starts to look. The money was obviously never paid out.
What is the bigger crime what Porter did or what the NBA does every night with crooked officiating. A lottery draft order determined in secret. Trades made to benefit big name franchises. Corrupt from the top to the bottom. All major sports networks are in business with the NBA.
All the gambling companies and mobsters getting into bed with Professional Sports, and people are surprised this is happening??? It's only going to get worse.
Angel Hernandez (questionable calls) and banging drums in MLB. The NBA which always seems to have gambling issues -- refs AND players. And the NFL which is full of bad beats, script rumors and plenty of incentive and pay disparity between participants. Might as well gamble on WWE... At least they admit to being "Sports Entertainment."
Bro shoulda taken advantage of his opportunity and earned a 20 mill a year contract … his team was tanking and giving young guys a shot instead he took advantage for a quick buck… not to mention how stupid do you have to be to place a 80K parlay to win a mill involving the under on all your stats the same night you just so happen to sit out cuz of a random llness you don’t think they gonna flag that. 😂
Here's a theory: they bring this out right before Nuggets- Lakers to disrupt his brother in a playoff series where they're trying to make Lebron James better than Jordan.
Porter is repleacable. The Commisoner made an example out of him. If he would have been a SUPERSTAR of the league like Michael Jordan, LeBron James or Shohei Otani, he would have been protected and given a pass. There are privileges that some people get that others don't. The man who makes the most money makes the rules.....It's the American way.
Why you had a a great job put a ball in a basket and make 2 million a year you just throw it a way for gambling millions of people wish that they had his gift to put a ball in a basket and make a lot of money
No Patrick, not true about integrity! We know there’s referees and judges in various sports that’s been involved in cheat scandals but they hide it! So stop with the pontificating view!
Yes, punishes employees who can directly change the outcome of the game. Same for companies like the one I work for, if I buy/sell stock based on insider knowledge I will be fired and possibly jailed.
Not really, Casinos, Racetracks, Bingo Halls all have restrictions on their employees gambling all of which do nothing but promote gambling. Hell, a store owner cannot cash a lottery ticket. The leagues allow players to gamble on anything except their own sport for integrity reasons like this dumbass has created, if the players are that dumb that they are willing to bet on their sport and lose their career that is on them not the league. That being said I don't think the leagues should have ANY involvement with the gambling sites it looks bad and creates controversy.
Why don’t you know more about what you’re trying to talk about. Banned means banned. Duh!!! Perhaps with a chance for reinstatement after 2 years if the person gets professional therapy. You don’t know that? Banned means banned, period. Duh!!!
NBA is lost. They do the same thing punishing ja morant with his guns but allow music for ads and all star games that promote gun violence and drugs. They want the money but don’t want anyone to think they’re operating a fake shady business which they are.
