Trying for my second brick this morning. Cycle then run. Just had my first official 5k on Saturday. Beat my PB by 3 minutes. Going to start to try for 4-5 mile runs now to get my 5k faster. Love your channel. Thanks for the info.
Really informative channel. As a new runner back in November 2021 I had started the coach to 5k. Completed 5K park run and then moved onto the next stage of recently completing the great north 10k. I now need to get from 10k to half marathon ready for this year’s GNR22!
About salts lost sweating, I loose a lot of salts on my sweat which on very long activities can cause cramps. Regular gel intake avoids it for the most part except in really hot conditions. In this scenario I use some small “shots” of magnesium + potassium that Aptonia (Decathlon) sells, you drink it during the activity. The key is to learn when you need it and that requires training.
#gtncoachescorner got sick (head cold, runny nose, sore throat, etc) 2 weeks before my A race (sprint distance), any tips on what i can do to best prepare for the race? Would love to know for the future as well.
#gtncoachescorner Hi guys, for some background, this is my second season doing triathlon and I have just completed my first Olympic distance, It was so much fun/painful, loved it. I have a running background and my swimming is ok compared to my age group competitors, however I lose so much time on the bike. Even with fellow athletes whom swim and run are similar to me, I lose 7-9 minutes over a 40k bike, not even having some lighting fast transitions helps me catch up, lol. To be honest I am not bothered about them being better, that's fair enough and it motivates me, but I wonder what can I do to strengthen my cycling without affecting my swim and run training. Thanks a lot, keep up the great work.
I came to ask this very question! But for me, it’s the swim that’s by far my weakest discipline. How to make improvements in one area without compromising the other 2. Tips would be brilliant team! #gtncoachescorner
#choaches corner. Hi my wife just qualified for the 2023 world international distance duathlon finals in Ibiza next year. But she was planning on doing a marathon in November and try to qualify for Boston in 2024. What she wants to know is she feels like she a had a lack lustre performance during her qualification. Should she focus on her duathlon for next May and forgo the marathon or can she do both and be at her best for both? Thanks so much keep up the good work.
#gtncoachescorner Heather-James-Mark! I have a bit of a moral dilemma on my hands. In a few weeks I’ll be taking the wife and kids cross country (U.S.) on holiday to visit family. We will be gone for about two weeks. While I’m there I can easily borrow a bike, but feel I need to bring my two pairs every day trainers, trail running pair, and race pair (local 5k compulsive entry 😉). If I were traveling alone the shoes would be no problem, but with family space is limited. Can you help justify the need to take all my running gear with me?
Even after measuring max HR and resting HR, I found that the classic HR zones were too optimistic in terms of their classification - e.g. upper Z2 at 80% of max HR is way too high for Z2 training. I am a cyclist not a runner. This optimism was confirmed when i had a lab test that showed my first lactate threshold (LT1) at 123 bpm, 20bpm lower than the top of classic Z2. Three months later, my LT1 power went up, but LT1 HR is now at 113bpm (65% of HR max). Please don't take classic zones as realistic zones, they often are not!
I suspect this is a case of the max HR being misleading while comparing with anaerobic threshold (LT2) would be more informative. The simple reason is there is a wide range of variation in where this is as a percentage of max HR.
What are some tips for racing with prescription glasses? I've had glasses for most of my life, and I can't see without them, but as a broke college student, I don't have money (and my insurance doesn't cover) either prescription sunglasses or contact lenses. Any tips for both a quick transition and protecting the glasses? (Edit for typos and clarification)
I’m similar - I go without them during the swim and just follow feet, then in T1 I pick them up from out of my cycling shoes :) not ideal, but having bad eyesight is not ideal anyway!
#gtncoachescorner hello, I've completed 2 70.3's this year and for the bike leg i held 198w and 197w average power and managed to run relatively strong. My FTP is currently 235. I'm booked up for ironman Hamburg next year and would like to know what kind of power I should be aiming for in a full ironman. Thanks jack
#gcncoachescorner why is it that we see world class athletes become younger and younger (in long distance triathlon)? Do you think we will see a similar development in marathon were the top athletes are also usually in there thirties? Maybe not a obvious question for coaches corner, but I think it's an interesting topic to talk about:)
I had the same heart rate question! On easy runs I'll sometimes push 170 and on a hard 5k I might even hit 200, even though I don't feel like I'm quite hitting max effort. It's just a hard run, and I have room to go faster into a sprint. Can that possibly just be a by-product of being female?
#gtncoachescorner Do you structure a swimming workout in open water the same as one in the pool? For ex. do you do kick sets, drills, main set, etc.? Do you change something depending on the water condition (for ex. waves)?
#gtncoachescorner Hi All. My bike size is XS to S. Some makes offer 650b wheels and others 700c Is one better than the other in terms of performance, aerodynamics, and tire/tube choices? Thanks!
#gtncoachescorner Hello friends! When I swim in the ocean for more than 20 minutes the constant salt from The water in my mouth makes me nauseous and I have to stop swimming. Because of this I avoid choosing races that have the swim part in the ocean, but I’d like to not have that limitation. I imagine I’m not the only one. How do long distance IM swimmers deal with this? Thanks!
#gtncoachescorner Would triathletes benefit from joining a masters swim squad if they haven't grown up swimming, and only learned to swim freestyle as an adult?
