I'm exploring three ways in which photographers can invest in themselves, evaluating them on the basis of cost, time and impact.
I know you'll have recommendations for me and I'd love you to share them in the comments... this is a year of focused improvement for many of us, so let's help each other out... what do you do that makes a real difference to your photography?
The link I refer to regarding the vlogs and interviews is here: / @landscapelenscastpodcast
The two fabulous photographers I am investing earning from are:
CHRIS FROST - Dorset-based landscape photographer specialising in atmospheric images of the stunning Jurassic coastline and Dorset's hidden woodland gems.
Find his work at www.chrisfrost...
SHONA PERKINS - a Scottish Photographer, specialising in Seascape and ICM Photography who is heavily influenced by contemporary art and abstract minimalism.
Find her work at mybeautifulsco...

Nice video Louise. Other than the ones you have mentioned, I really like Henry Turner and also Nigel Danson. Two different styles but very nice I think. Street photography Mike Chudley. Nick Page. Dave Morrow and Pierre T Lambert are my favorite to watch. For the editing, I have learned a lot from Christian Mohrle.

One person you might want to check out is Courtney Victoria- she does lots of woodland photography in the Forest of Dean- I really enjoy her videos. I'm Canadian and am spending several months living in the UK- and speaking of inspirational- you completely inspired us to go to Brighton for the murmuration after seeing your video. It was amazing- your info was so helpful in me getting some good shots- and a memory that will be for a lifetime. It will be a highlight of our time over here- and it was from seeing what you were doing there- so thank you! Last weekend I went to The Forest of Dean after seeing what Courtney does there- I can't do woodland photography (yet).. but I just wanted to see the forest. The forests here are so different than the ones back home- so much to make interesting photos with the moss, fungi and craggily branches and interesting shaped trees... and the bluebells! Looking forward to seeing bluebells.

Ahhh another person also said about her and I do watch her…her approach is fresh. I like Courtney. Now the video I made on the murmuration at Brighton was last year and they have been AMAZING this year. I think at least 4-5 times the amount we had last year. I am soooo pleased you caught them. I’ve been twice this winter and WOW! When I can actually do woodland better, I’ll follow your example and study Courtney again before taking a trip up there. Thank you for the feedback and travel safely 👍

Hi... Well, I've enjoyed the videos of Peter McKinnon for the last 2-3 years, for the sheer stimulating energy and likability of the man. He's been moving from digital to film in the last few months, which is interesting, and again, his leanings may be a long way from yours, who knows? But I must check out your own recommendations. There are a lot of good, instructive and inspiring people out there - and now I've found you. Just discovered, and subscribed, thanks!

I think a new love of Rain photography will be required to get through 2024 in the UK! 😅

Hi Louise, I always like watching your videos. I was born in Brighton, worked in Shoreham, Chichester and Littlehampton. Moved to South Africa and now back in Surrey so your local videos deeply resonate with me. Nigel Danson is my other go to. His photographs are stunning. One thing I have learned from Nigel is that I suspect many keen photographers could capture many of his beautiful sunrise shots etc. The difference being not many of us are prepared to be on location at 04.30 on a freezing cold dark morning and hike our gear up the side of a long steep hill by torchlight! That takes supreme commitment. But the resultant joy must be ‘well it doesn’t get better than this’! That’s not to take away Nigel’s great eye for woodland scenes and his post processing skills. I’m very interested in ICM (and anything arty) but haven’t practised it enough. Maybe that’s my next project. I look forward to your next video. Best wishes.

An interersting look at how to tackle things that many of us face as photographers. It was interesting to see your list of inspirational vloggers you watch - sadly I think many of the bigger names now concentrate on locations that are beyond the reach of people on a budget so tend to think I am never going to get there so have dropped many - I do still watch Tom Heaton as he is a good storyteller. . It was therefore good to see people like Chris Knight on your list who although not a photographer per se does give inspiration via his locations. I follow many wild campers (as I do occasionally camp myself) and very often with my photographers eye on I will pick something up in a piece of normal b-roll - the same with some walking channels I follow.
@louisewelcomephotography
@louisewelcomephotography 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for the feedback - I do get the budget thing, and will only really look at some of the bigger names for a 'wow' factor as I'm never going to get to the places. I do like the ones where more than one tog goes as it's so interesting to see how they interpret things differently even though they are standing in front of the same wider scene. Really interesting you should about the B roll. Stalking that it can be so useful. Sometimes I even see things in my own videos where I think 'how the heck did I not look behind me'. The walkers are really useful, in particular because I know it's going to take me longer than most to get to a place so if they are struggling... well, I'm in for some fun! (Gulp). I'd love to know if you have any tips for specifically interesting walkers that I may start with. Thank you so much. Louise

Most important I have Free Colour Notes app (android) so I share good photo tubes with that & can then also make notes on the videos - can even colour code to editing landscape venues etc - this is the best part as you can refer back to them. Hello, Louise. You cant go past Simon Booth for woodland and 25 years as an ICM photographer, Stephanie Johnson, she's a mentor for me, and is brilliant. Surprised you didn't have Adam Gibbs on your list for landscape and post. Bri Barnham is pretty good too. And to learn plenty about photography, mostly outside of landscape, but certainly will teach you something for sure, is Ted Forbes and Alex Kilbee. A fellow Aussie, Jeremy Payne, is worth a look too.. Cheers

Henry Turner for enthusiasm and getting out in all conditions. Marcus from Photography Online is also a good source of inspiration. From the world of film photography, I particularly enjoy Steve O'Nions. The main difference to my photography in recent years is, I've been lucky enough to get outdoors and spend more time on my own photography and experimentation, with digital and film, as well as indoors post processing.
@louisewelcomephotography
@louisewelcomephotography 6 месяцев назад
Phil, hasn't Henry's journey been a joy to watch over the past couple of years. He's really blossomed (and I don't mean that in a patronising way), his confidence, his enthusiasm and he hasn't lost his humility either. He works very hard at his craft. The others, I need to look at. I watch photography online and I need to take more notice. There is a gentleman who really explains the theory well with practical demonstrations with a child and a snooker table I remember (not together). Really helpful. Thanks for the recommendations, hugely appreciated.
@philparker97
@philparker97 6 месяцев назад
@@louisewelcomephotography Yes, I agree with your sentiments about Henry, and also it's never about gear and equipment with him or the latest technology - he is firmly self-deprecating and enthuses me to get out. Marcus from Photography Online is the guy who does the theory (and practical) that you mention, and manages to dispel myths and misunderstood theories, which are sometimes popular beliefs - he has corrected my misbeliefs on more than one occasion (despite being previously schooled). There are others, I didn't mention because they have already been recommended below. Others I enjoy from Birding and Wildlife are great inspiration, although they often use 'Hides' and specific props at locations that are not readily available to me in the same way that I can access the great outdoors, woodlands and mountains. Of course, we're all on the learning process, and RU-vid does help the journey to development. I shall be checking out some of the recommendations in the comments below - and I may just watch a few more of your clips as well 🙂!
