One of the more interesting historical phenomena to be revived in the early 2000s is certainly the resurgence of piracy off the coast of Somalia. For over a decade spiking in 2010, pirates from Somalia terrorised the shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean, boarding cargo ships, personal yachts and fishing trawlers, bringing the vessels back to the coast and holding their occupants hostage before demanding a payment of ransom. But how is this possible in the modern world? In this video we'll explore the twentieth century history of Somalia, the military dictatorship, civil wars and breakdown of society making piracy a viable profession for thousands of young men.#

does not really applie, because piracy was a favored method of waging war during the early modern period, it was cheap and proffitable, a letter of mark made it legal and all goods had to be put in ledgers (not that they would have always done so) there were actually taxes on it, so it also brought in a lot of money and the early days of the VOC were primarily characterised by income from privateering. piracy is now seen as the oldest international crime, because by default a pirate without a letter of mark was an international outlaw and thus an enemy of every state
@LuvBorderCollies

One thing that made me laugh out loud, the idea of the large Fishing concerns learning a lesson and coming to respect small local fishermen! Hilarious.... As a Marine Biologist who has spent decades tracking and monitoring fishing activities and the affect of said activities, I can safely say that those people will never learn to respect anything. The only thing they care about is the dollar in their pocket, the fact that they are fishing themselves out of a career at a horrifyingly fast rate is not something they will concern themselves with over much. At least till the stocks collapse, then of course they will whinge and whine at the Biologists who have been telling the idiots for literally decades that yes, in fact wild populations of fish CAN indeed be overfished, and no, there is no magic cure for their own greed and stupidity....

@@pringleaddict5827 how can they be seen as worse? babies are literally being born with birth defects because of the chemicals dumped into the water. Trawling destroys the habitats of fish by dragging heavy nets on the sea floor. Whatever these trawlers don't catch leave the area due to their being no suitable habitat. What ever fish stay, become contaminated with god knows what. Now imagine you are a fisherman. You see these foreign ships destroying the seabed, and dumping chemicals into the water. Your daughter has just been born with serious defects and will need to be taken care of for the rest of her life. In addition what little fish stay in the area are contaminated and you and the rest of your village have all been feeling ill. What do you think people would do in this situation? 5:00 this is wrong. The SNM simply fought to oust Siad Barre and form a new government with the southern based USC. They didn’t pursue a separatists agenda until the USC started infighting (as you mentioned with aidid and mahdi). Even then the first President Abdirahman Tuur was well known for wanting unity between the south and north and Second president Egaal who ousted Tuur didn’t really view Somaliland as a permanent thing which got him lots of accusations of being Pro Unity instead of being pro Somaliland. Also an important thing you left out was the clan system which plays an important part of Somali history.

Piracy in Indonesia along the Straits of Malacca had also been an issue previous to Somalia so the expression 'the origin of the pirate phenomenon' (9:54) misses the greater point that piracy has been with us to a greater or lesser extent since earlier times. That being said, great work overall. An interesting foray into a complex subject, keep it up!

Ships have started hiring paramilitary private contractors to defend their ships from pirates, and for some reason people are mad that people are protecting themselves from pirates,,, it’s interesting. Though the armed ships Basicly never get pirated, so it seems to be working.

@Greater Somalia There's no good dictator, there's only one, just cause he didn't starve his people doesn't make him good. he didn't build institutions and destroyed the nation's economy by his communist ideology, and when his people criticized him and asked for change he imprisoned them, tortured them and killed them. ps you judge someone's leadership by their legacy.
@thestealth2448
@thestealth2448 3 года назад
@Greater Somalia this is an over exaggeration. Somalia was stable but that's about it. The majority were in poverty except the upper class in Mogadishu. And lots of progress during his time wasn't even by him but his predecessor but he gets credit for it. Ultimately if he transferred power peacefully Somalia wouldn't be in the state it is today, rebels wouldn't start popping up and al Shabaab would never happen. Instead he was selfish and chose to persecute his critics and benefit his closest kin which only alienated more Somalis.

@jamacwaal8026

There were 4 main factions, which in short order turned on each other and became dozens of sub-factions who all hate each other. Not so simple like the Union vs Confederacy, unfortunately. Sadly, they all lost in the end 😩

In the end an Islamic theocratic faction won but Ethiopia intervened and kicked them out making another power vacuum and the Islamic faction became a terrorist group alshabab now there is a government but alshabab still hold much control in the south
@Handle0108
@Handle0108 3 года назад
Basically people sometime in the early 2000 got tired of the secular conflicts and just wanted some peace and stability through Islamic governance. When the then more tolerant Islamic government actually pretty much won the war and ended the large scale conflicts, foreign powers like Ethiopia invaded to ensure chaos in Somalia for their own benefit. Basically because they didn’t want a new stable Islamic government as their neighbours, cause they already had issues with the strong secular Somali state in the 1970s.
