Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer and is a factor in around 1.8 million deaths each year. Professor Theodore Holford at the Yale School of Public Health, USA, is part of The Cancer Intervention and Surveillance Modelling Network (CISNET). CISNET has developed a smoking history generator for US states, that enables modelers to include changes in smoking patterns. This aids public health policy development to save millions of lives annually.
