This Q&A is pulled from a collection of questions posed to me by students of my Online Permaculture Design Course (PDC). Learn more with my free four-part Masterclass series, here:

Question:
Seeing posts on Facebook and hearing news alerts locally of cyanobacteria blooms in local ponds. Is this a seasonal occurrence? Are there usually other causes that can be observed and corrected to reduce such blooms? Are there other uses for a dangerous algae bloom? How can I "the problem is the solution" this situation?

About Geoff:
Geoff is a world-renowned permaculture consultant, designer, and teacher. He has established permaculture demonstration sites that function as education centers in all the world’s extreme climates - information on the success of these systems is networked through the Permaculture Research Institute and the www.permaculturenews.org website.
About Permaculture:
Permaculture (en.wikipedia.o...) integrates land, resources, people and the environment through mutually beneficial synergies - imitating the no waste, closed-loop systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture applies holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban contexts and at any scale. It is a multidisciplinary toolbox including agriculture, water harvesting and hydrology, energy, natural building, forestry, waste management, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, economics, and community development.

2 months of no rain in a normally rainy season. We drew down 9 out of 25 dams straight down. We still had plenty more to go - resilience.

Im in Salem Oregon, the city gets its water from a reservoir called Detroit Lake. Every year the federal government drains the lake to extremely low levels, then is shocked when massive cyanobacteria blooms form. Now they are having to do a massive filtration system to filter the toxins released from the cyanobacteria. As Geoff mentioned, its about keeping the body of water stable. Its incredibly infuriating when the federal, state, and city governments refuse to actknowledge the real cause of the problem. Meanwhile, the citizens are having to drink and cook with bottle water due to the toxic water being created by the very people who are supposed to ensure its safety.

why are they draining the lake?

Its the Federal government who is draining the lake. They make BS claims about sediment and allowing the stock fish down stream into the wild. It's complete BS. They are causing sediment problems by releasing it into the lower reservoir and the river below that, it causes all sorts of problems. Then the fish excuse, why would you stock the lake with fish, only to then release nearly all of them to die in the high sediment river that was just agrivated by you in the first place? @ Don Turco, it doesnt matter how you vote, you dont get a vote on what the EPA or Army Corps of Engineers does, they dont consider what you think, or how it affects your life.

@@wagzz3000 in New South Wales Australia, the river along certain farmland have had 100,000s of fish die and the media has kept pretty low on the subject. Coverup? I think so.

Lactic acid bacteria will help with the problem

So if you are dealing with a toxic algae bloom that is in a more open water situation like a large lake, where you can't really control the run off water sources, what would you do?
@Barskor1

Promote none toxic algae or duckweed etcetera.

if your climate is cold enough, like mine, just post signs saying its unfit for swimming and the the cool weather hits it back to safe levels.

How do they clean the bottom of the ponds? That was a good question. Just curious if they drain the pond to clean it or what (or use a machine dipping down in the water like a back hoe)
@Barskor1

Drag buckets work.

In Australia we wait for a drought, then once the dam in empty we use a backhoe or front loader to remove the build up from the bottom of the dam. Hope this makes sense.

I'm thinking you might have meant to say no rain in December/January? Pretty sure you have just received good rain in the last few weeks of Feb.

He is referring to January / February 2019. The Q&A videos are pulled from a selection of questions asked to Geoff within his Online PDC. So, they were filmed 6-12 months ago and published to his students at that time. After that, some of the Q&A's are scheduled to uploaded to youtube, as this one was.
