”How can you be Mexican and Muslim?”
"Change in Color" highlights stories from people of color, LGBTQ, and marginalized groups. We hear their success, challenges, and triumphs.
Meet Marya Ayloush
Marya is a graduating senior at UCLA. She’s half Mexican and half Syrian, and with that identity she has had to deal with a myriad of stereotypes and labels. Being the daughter of an activist, she’s determined to use her Chicana/Chicana studies degree to give back to communities in need. Marya talks about the hardships of growing up wearing the Hijab and the blatant xenophobia and hate crime that she had to experience in a liberal and progressive city in California. Furthermore she opens up about how under the Trump administration all of her identities, as a Muslim Mexican woman, are under attack from the harmful rhetoric the current administration pushes. She also touches on how she created a movement with her brand that brings fashion, Hijabs, and awareness all in one.
