I've had really good luck with this, and really bad luck with this. My little sister has brought a few boyfriends to join our long running home game. And sometimes it's been great, and other times it's been a real shit show. But I learned from every experience, and now, if someone wants to bring someone in, I've got process I'll go through first. Number one being "Do *I* want to play D&D with this person?" If they can't even pass that threshold, then it's an easy no. But, some guest allies have allowed for some great moments. I had one where a guest PC for a few sessions turned on the characters in a great double cross, and kept sabotaging the mission in very plausible and "unlucky" ways. They were killed in dramatic fashion, but it was a great series of sessions.

I really appreciate these moments where you recognise the differences between Critical Role as a production vs a home game. It can example good/bad dnd practice, but some things are just different when it's professional vs you and your friends at home. You can't usually vet home game guests in the same way or at least expect a certain level of behaviour for it being recorded

Yeah, 100%. The players at the CR table are professionals first and foremost, so it's okay for them to wait to be introduced because they're getting paid. Even if you have fun at your job, it's still a job, and the same can't be said for someone who's just there to play and has to spend a lot of time not doing that!

I've rewritten entire adventure ideas because a player at the table had a "dog" phobia. Granted, this leads to the reminder that you can always reskin a critter to have another creature's powers. When the phase "dog" was turned into a phase cat, it went over pretty well.

I ended up going from single session guest to core party member in one session. The party was doing a fight pit type arena event, and I pitched to the DM "hey, what if I'd built a cheerleader to sit in the stands", as a full support bard tossing out healing words and bardic inspirations from the stands. It ended up being SO clutch the party basically begged me to stick around long term as their fan girl. Which even lead to some 'DM conspiracy' since I was an important noble that 'mysteriously vanished' since she just. wandered off with the party. So recruiting me accidentally lead to this big chase with the party labeled as kidnappers and dealing with random mercenaries sent to retrieve me. While they were trying to stop the world from ending in a 'we're the good guys you idiots' type situation.

For home games, the table needs to know who is joining them to avoid personal conflicts. The surprise can come from not knowing the character the gueat is playing.
@PVS3

On the lines/veils/dogs thing - I suspect more often than not you'll have either 1) Broad overlap with existing boundaries, requiring minimal extra communication 2) A specific, messy, but above-all UNIQUE conflict like the "dog" example. Something that requires deep consideration of the individuals involved, and where general advice is less applicable.

Robbie Daymond was the ideal guest player imo. He slotted well into the established dynamic in terms of both player and character, he didn’t take it so seriously that it made the game less fun to watch but also serious enough that it didn’t throw things off, had clear respect for the game and it’s established setup and viewerbase but didn’t hold either of those things in such a high regard that he was afraid to bring his own spin into certain areas, and was charismatic on his own enough that there’s wasn’t a need to involve other PCs for me to be interested in his character. He was probably the best integrated guest player, to the point that a lot of people wanted him to become a permanent cast member. I can’t say follow his lead as a guest player because it’s just…not that simple?? But I think he’s good to look to for an inspiration and general skeleton of guest-starring, if nothing else. (This also isn’t a dig at the other guest players. I didn’t enjoy *all* of them, but most of them are at good slots on the CR Guest Player tier list. I think there were only 2 that I didn’t really like on any level, the rest ranged anywhere from fine to awesome. I just personally think Robbie did it the best.)

I honestly can't remember not liking any guest player on CR... Maybe the very beginning of Will Friedle's appearance, since he's character felt very negative. But that very quickly changed, as I appreciated the dynamic that character brought to the table. Funnily, Wil Wheaton's character was also a bit negative in personality and I've lost a tiny bit respect for him as a person later on due to his comments after CR's Geek and Sundry departure, but I loved his character from the very beginning.

Wasn't expecting the nod the Matt Colville's almost-guest-spot! I remember listening to him read out some of their plans on stream after Campaign 2 wrapped. I've guested at a table or two for friends, and it's always felt a little like being an act on a variety show. Be interesting enough for the moment, then fade into the background quickly.

I was brought in as a guest for about 3 sessions by the DM to kind of help create a teaching moment for the players. He had a player with a paladin that was derailing the game and kind of bullying the other players. It worked, they all learned some major lessons, at the cost of my character dying. The others stood up to the paladin's bad behavior and they all began to finally galvanize as a team. The DM said it wasn't his style to fix problems like this in game but I was adamant that it work. Plus I got the chance to use my orc bard who dresses like a cheerleader. Rest in peace Marborg, you had team spirit.

I once had a guest player in the "friend in town for the weekend" vein, in a superhero RPG with an easy and fun random character generation system. :) Thus, the climax of the first six issues of the game involved an unexpected cameo from Bubbles, the Space Dolphin! Who was literally a hyper-intelligent dolphin who rocketed down from space like a meteor to join the fight. It was great and everyone loved it. XD

I was a guest player in a friend's game once. I had designed, with the GM's help, an irritable hermit ranger who could assist the party with their current mission, but would have little reason to follow them into the rest of the campaign (since, you know, guest character). It didn't turn out super well. While the game itself went fine, the character didn't mesh super well; after the session, the GM told me that if that had an NPC, the players would have just left her behind and did the mission on their own. And I don't entirely disagree, but I think he and I drew different lessons from the experience. He seems to think it would have been better for the guest character to be friendlier so the party would have had a greater incentive to take her along. For my part, I don't think friendliness is the only incentive that would have worked, but we did forget to make sure there was one; the party already knew the location where the adventure was taking place, they had a connection with the dragon the villains had kidnapped, I (both as the player and the character) didn't know of any secret passageway or shortcut that would have been of tactical advantage, etc. Long story short, aside from an extra weapon, the character wasn't really bringing anything to the table. In conclusion, the lesson of the story is to always make sure your guest character has a reason to be invited that is more than just "Well, the guest player is sitting at the table, so we should bring their character along so they're not bored".

The two times I've been a guest player, my general feeling has always been wanting more. The first time, I ended up staying for too many sessions for my schedule due to some miscommunication with the DM, but then after I kept feeling the need to ask the DM if I could tell him what my previous guest character had been up to in the background, mostly just to him reprising my guest character in a later arc, but that's as far as it went. It got to the point though that it didn't really seem it was going anywhere so I just started joking that my character died in the apocalypse that the party was solving. The other time was more recent but feels similar. I guest starred in a game as a psychopomp in training sent to monitor the party, and felt a lil bummed when I couldn't give the DM a few parting requests of calling dibs on being the party's psychopomp on account how well the session went. I think the lesson is that DMs really need to set expectations of what happens after, is your character going to become an NPC or just never be heard from again? Will there be chances to reprise them or are they being handed to the GM? Even if they don't show up, are they even still relevant in the background? As important as entering a campaign, knowing how and when you'll be dipping out is another thing.

We had a guest player who was a friend of, and conspiring agent for, the Overseer in our Fallout 2d20 game. He was a friendly "preacher" of the Church of Atom who got us helping them with some plans they had for the local area. It would turn out later that said character was the Number Two man in the villain group, and us helping him was going to bring a lot of Hell down on our heads, but we had a good time with a new friend to the group.

I actually had the chance to guest in about a half-dozen sessions a friend of mine was running. She's a professional DM and the planned upcoming combats 4-5 players around level 5, but this particular group only had 3, so since I knew the setting and had a PC from an old campaign that fell apart due to scheduling, my 6th level Pact of the Witch Bladelock was able to help out the party. Was great for me because I got to revisit an old favorite character (who has had far-reaching implications due to her patron in the settings of this DM) and sling some dice, my friend got someone she could trust in on of her paid games to not screw anything up and the players got to have their moments. I knew full well this wasn't Medb's story, she was just there to help out

I had a guest player last week. It was a lot of fun for everyone. The player was itching for some DnD but couldn't commit to a full campaign because scheduling. The guest had only played 5e and we run PF2e.I asked them to pitch a character concept narratively, then built the character sheet for them. I asked them to come an hour earlier for a brief mini-session 0 and explained the key character feats and features to them. I had the guest PC meet the party at a roadside inn on the way to the next location, and gave them a choice about why their character was at the inn. The guest chose to be the bartender. I gave the party a few minutes to prepare what they needed before leaving their base, then jumped straight to their arrival at the inn, which I then narrated from the guests point of view. In the end, the party played a full 3 hour session without leaving that Inn. Let's just say plenty of shenanigans happened.

I think the lines and veils thing is especially useful to determine if the guest player is even a basic fit for the group. For example, if the players phobia of spiders (which I assume is what the odd dog example was about) is so severe that even the simple word spider is horribly triggering for them, and your adventure involves a bunch of spider themes, the best solution here is to simply not include the guest as they are obviously ill suited for this adventure. And they probably need to work on their phobias if even the simple word 'spider' is triggering instead of hoping the world around them will bend to extremes to accommodate their fear of even the word 'spider'.

We brought a guest player in for a fight in Tyranny of Dragons involving three black dragons - two adults and one ancient. We had just had to cut a player for personal reasons, and this guy was available at short notice. When we wrapped up, my now-wife said "we want to keep him in the party, let him know he's permanent now". He was so flattered the party liked him so much. Thankfully he knew the system really well, so we could hit the ground running.

In my Edge of the Empire campaign, had a player join as a guest Inquisitor to just mess with the party for a session and figured it would just be that with his busy schedule at the time, only for them to became a part of the party after they outsmarted him and "convinced" him to join them instead.

I played a goblin druid with a lot of pigs in a Pathfinder game. I think he was called a boar shaman or something. He was Florf the Boaring. I left the campaign for various reasons, but, some time later, the GM invited me back for a special session where the party had to fight a leveled up Florf who was being mind controlled. They broke him free of mind control, at which point he remembered the in-character reasons he left and kept fighting them.

My local church once did a 24h dnd fundraising livestream, where the donations allowed people to influence everything from dice rolls to the overall story arc. I made a substantial contribution to request I be a guest PC at some point in the 24h. I finally got rolled in at 1am as a stone giant they ran into. I forget the specifics, but the party managed to drop me off a cliff or down me in about four minutes of play time. Not the most fun experience but I guess the players did not want someone cramping their style even if it was a donor. That has continued to leave a sour taste in my mouth ever since.

This video has the perfect timing for me because I'm currently trying to get a guest player into my campaign, although I'm a player, not the DM. The DM (and the rest of my group) normally play in person at our university, but a lot of us have gone back to our hometowns over the summer so we're switching to online games for a few months. One of my best friends in my hometown is really invested in our game- I call her to talk about our sessions after each one, and she's a fantastic artist who has drawn multiple of our characters and is working on a campaign poster for us. I've introduced her to my DM over a discord call, and all three of us are probably going to end up working together to make my friend's character and get her into the game (although we told the other people in our group about it). I'm pretty sure the two of them are conspiring together cause they made me take my headphones off for like 5 minutes during the call where I introduced them to talk about secrets, and I'm really excited for that. Thanks for the great advice about bringing guest players in! Love your videos!

I have shocked my players with a new and guest players. I did this by setting the presidents for new players to watch a little bit of the game to see how the quarks of players and character before even making their own character. So sometimes after a session or two they will be introduced at a predetermined point I steer the group towards as a the GM. Knowing they were there already and being comfortable allows them to be caught off guard.

My sister was once a guest player in a campaign. She ended up playing an NPC who had already been travelling with the party for several episodes, so the narrative didn't have to justify her character showing up. Don't know if a guest taking control of a recurring NPC is a common occurrence. I guested in a game when I wanted to try out TTRPGs after getting into Critical Role, but it was for a oneshot in a different system, so I didn't have to be integrated into anything ongoing. It was fun, but the DM threw in some references to their regular players' in-jokes from earlier campaigns and those all awkwardly flew over my head.

I have a back pocket character idea I keep for specifically if I’m called upon to be a guest player, a ranger that specializes in aquatic enemies and fights using a cane pole like a quarter staff. This basically lets me drop in anywhere there would be water, and lets the DM flavor the session with fish and other aquatic enemies.

I think it's really important to make sure your guest player's playstyle matches the party's playstyle. You can see how important this is on Critical Role when they have guest players who are "performers" joining an existing party of "roleplayers". But I also think guest players should make a point to try to match the tone and style of the group you're joining.

Sadly that went rather horribly with a lot of drama at the end, I was never incorporated properly into the group and never informed of particular triggers which led to a lot of conflict later with a very sensitive player who couldnt handle angry voices. Things i could have kept in mind and adjusted if we had like a session re-zero when i joined up. Never really felt like i got to leave the guest player status even when we played together for 2 years.

I was asked to be a guest player in a group of 5+DM due to a PC having real world tragedy happen, but she was the party wizard... They literally stopped the session outside of Mordenkainen's tower because the wizard PC needed to learn a Mcguffin spell from him to take care of a General of the BBEG. Wizard leaves 2 days later... My older brother and the DM were friends back in boy scouts and i knew one of the players from band, so the DM reached out to me through my brother... we talked and decided that i was an apprentice of MK and so when the asked for assistance (instead of a spell "hand waved the wizard away), he offered to send me with the group(as i was the one who helped him develop the spell). 4 years and 2.5 campaigns later, im currently the fairy Knowledge domain cleric helping the party navigate the FeaWild in wild beyond... best group ive ever played with and am now a guaranteed seat at the V table... and all of that because they needed another wizard for 2-3 sessions for a major thematic set piece that couldn't really be changed

I was once a guest player in an online game. I barely knew the DM and didn't know the player so it was weird that the DM asked me to join and pretend to be a friend and then turn on the party. I did that and it was weird, and of course I didn't stick around. A few months later he again asked me to play and my character would pretend that I had changed my mind again and then again betray them. It was really weird logistically too because I was just in the vc but he just said I was hanging out to see if I wanted to join the group. The whole thing was a mess tbh

Not guests but I was gonna run an intro one shot for some friends and acquaintances. And I just threw way too much at them too quick. I said it was all optional but I learned I should’ve just told them when and where to show up, because it fell through absolutely due to my overenthusiasm.

Bringing in guest players is a lot like bringing in a new PC, either because they're joining or character passed & they need a new one. Unless the person is comfortable with it, you need to make introducing them as quickly as possible a priority.

On the subject of Critical Roll making their guest players wait for a big reveal, Michael Cain once said, “I work for free, you pay me to wait.” Unless you’re paying your players, for some reason, like Mike said, don’t make your guest players wait too long. Respect their time

My DM brought in a guest player for a couple sessions to push the story along and help navigate as a rogue. But they were devious and the guest player betrayed us. Which... i wasnt expecting. It definitly pushed the story along and pushed my character into being less trusting

Aubrey Plaza on Harmonquest is one of the reasons I hate having “guest players” at the table, because they tend to either not say anything at all, or to blow up every scene with chaotic energy

This is something I kinda wanted to try (but my friend dind't want to be a guest player haha). But since we play online, my main question was, how do I bring in the guest mid session to surprise the party? I can't make them wait in the discord server or it will spoil the surprise. I didn't find a good solution, but I'd ve curious to know if someone has one. Best one would be "don't make it a surprise", of course.

Can we get an episode on having a guest DM who can't behave normally/respectfully? or communicates and runs their play different from the DM. Seems the crit role fandom is having a meltdown over exactly that. reading behavior as banter and banter as as behavior.

I basically have a queue of guest players right now. Most of my table is made up of my girlfriend's coworkers and I had to cap it at 6 PCs. I'd love to just include everyone who wants to play all the time, but then I'd be approaching ten PCs and that's ridiculous. Like you said, it's not Critical Role.

Critical Role is a show, your home game isn't. Whole different buy-in when you are a paid player on a show, than just a pal hanging out in a game. Feel free to surprise you *PC'S* with guest *Characters* but not your players with guest players. (I mean, dependent on the context of your personal relationships with these people.) And when it comes to consent stuff, I think one of the determinations you should make about whether this guest gets to join your game, is whether their preferences match the groups. I think it's up to the group whether they want to pause their deal with...dogs, or whatever. If 5 people have bought in on something, a sixth shouldn't automatically decide that thing is a no go now (that said, if your regular players are up for changing things up, go for it. But it should be up to them, it's their game).

I didn't invite them, but I was the DM at the time one of our players suggested inviting another of our friends to guest and greenlit it. And boy howdy, did I not realize how much of a friend group internal politics minefield we stumbled into... Without going into all the gory details, the takeaway is definitely "Surprise guests sound like fun, and Actual Plays make them look like it, but it's probably better to make sure everyone at the table and/or the broader friend group not just the D&D group is on board beforehand."

Also, as an Elden Ring fan, your dogs confuse me. Everyone knows dogs are scaly and slow-moving with big, hard shells, not fuzzy with lots of legs and eyes and webs.

So, your guest player is afraid of AI dogs, something to have in mind. Anyway, I'm not thinking in having guest players yet because I don't feel confident I could do it well. Maybe after a few years of DM training I'll think about it.
