How Can You Tell if Your Dog has Arthritis: top 10 symptoms

Just how can you tell if your dog has arthritis? In this video I run through the 10 main symptoms of arthritis in dogs so you can tell if your dog is in pain or not.
The 10 signs of arthritis in dogs:
1 - lameness or stiffness is an obvious sign of pain. When several legs are painful though an arthritic dog may not clearly be limping.
2 - the lameness or stiffness might get worse in cold weather
3 - a general reduction in activity levels
4 - a reduced desire to exercise
5 - hesitant or unwilling to jump or climb
6 - As they get worse and start to loose muscle in their legs the sixth symptom of arthritis in dogs can be difficulty getting up when lying down
7 - spend more time sleeping, or at least lying in their bed
8 - loose muscle and gain fat as well as gaining weight overall
9 - reduce their interaction with the family
10 - change in general behavior, becoming more grumpy, anxious, withdrawn or even aggressive
These 10 symptoms of arthritis are also clear signs of pain for any other reason and should definitely prompt a visit to your dogs vet.
Now you might think that some of these arthritis symptoms are pretty extreme and you would definitely be able to tell your dog was in pain and had arthritis before they got to that point.
Remember though that arthritis comes on very gradually and so when you are seeing your dog every day it is actually quite easy to miss these things or just accept them as part of normal aging.

My Siberian Husky is 10 and he has pretty much all of these symptoms. I assumed he had arthritis for about 6 months now, because he has slowed down and has become more lethargic over the past few years. It’s difficult watching them when they’re in pain. I try to massage my dogs back legs when they hurt, since that seem to be where he suffers soreness and pain the most. That seems to offer him some relief. He is certainly a grumpy dog, haha. But I wouldn’t change anything about his personality. Dogs are for life, I will never understand how people can abandon their dogs, throwing them to the side like a used toy. They are sacred animals and it’s a privilege to share that emotional bond with them. I dread the day when my dog finally passes, hopefully that isn’t for a few years yet though. We know that they will eventually die when we get them as pups, yet that doesn’t make the thought or acceptance of it any easier.

For those who aren't aware of this or who can't afford a vet, CUT YOUR DOG'S NAILS. It can change your dog's life. Nail clippers go for less than 40 dollars. If he doesn't want you to touch his paws, make sure he's lying down, pour a few drops of milk in his bowl and when he's distracted... Clamp down hard and cut. It's a long process but it works. He might slip a couple of times because the paws are still getting used to the feeling of complete control. He'll be getting up and sitting down a lot better and faster. And gelatin is good for them too.

Absolutely right! An arthritic dog can get really long nails through inactivity which push the toes up and at horrible angles. Very painful! Using a file or emery board is another option, especially when the nails are black as the quicks can be very long in old dogs with long nails and hard to avoid with normal nail clippers. My dog ain’t moving he wasn’t feeling well for a couple of days now and he didn’t eat food for like three days and he managed to take few sips of water but he’s getting worse,I feel so, yesterday he was able to come out for a walk but today he can’t even sit and he finds it very hard to lie down so he wait for sometime, lies to the wall and slowly he falls down, yesterday we took him to the vet and he get few injections so do you think this behaviour is because of the injections?

@@avantikaramesh6701 I'm so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, my 15 and a half year old boy had the same symptoms in April. But then the next day he was walking just fine. Then last month he started throwing up and on the 18th of June I took him to the vet because his hind legs completely gave out and he could not get up unassisted. He was such a good boy and a soldier but we had to put him to sleep. He was such a fighter and a part of me believed he would live to see 25 years. But he was tired and surgery would have made him weaker. It wouldn't be fair to put him through that. But I feel like he prepared me somehow and even though I still cry and I am crying as I write this, I know he's alright now and I hope we will meet again someday. I don't know if your dog is ill because of the injections and maybe @Our Pets Health can give you advice about that if they see your comment and maybe you should ask the vet who prescribed his injections and medication. I hope he gets better soon. All I can say is if you feel like your dog is in pain and the vet is advising you to let him go, then you should consider it. It's not a decision to be taken lightly because you feel guilty whether you decide to put him to sleep or whether you decide otherwise. It hurts and you should only do it if you know you can handle the pain that comes with that guilt. The days that follow you'll be mad at yourself, at the vet and even at me for giving you this advice. That is the worst case scenario. So if he's strong enough, fight for him. You know your dog better than anyone. Get in touch with the vet again before he gets even worse. Good luck, i really hope your pup gets better.

New Hites actually the same thing happened with my dog today... see changes just take less than a day, he passed away today 7pm after struggling for days maybe god likes him too so he took him so quickly and it surprises me how he’s just a year old... he’s too young to have gone through all those struggles I still can’t get him off my mind...😭 the vet told us that there something in his stomach blocking his intestine which makes him throw up and he’s too weak to go through a surgery so we made a quick blood transplant today ( his haemoglobin level was very low ) but after all he just can’t fight anymore, I wish this happened days back without making him struggle, I still see him when I close my eyes...

i love my cassie she is the family's nanny she is truly part of my family but we have had her a few years i have noticed she is struggling getting up stairs just sorry to see her in pain its like seeing one of my kids in pain i have found the comfiest dog bed i could find along with a a snuggie overthrow for added comfort she's fast a sleep rolled up with her bowl of clear cold water.

I just took my 11yr old pitbull to the vet and got diagnosed with arthritis on his legs so the vet gave my medication for pain and inflammation 🙏 I hope you find a solution to your dog's situation and feels better soon

My dog is 14 yes old husband hinds legs sometimes have nerve issue or something and he falls but he doesn't cry out loud just makes faces of pain horrible pain . Happens randomly one to twice month . It almost looks like a paralysis attk pls help me if he's fine and if this is normal at his age ? Cause my current vet says it's normal for old dogs but I'm really concerned

My dogs shivers after coming back inside at nite when I let him out to do his business. It is fall here now so it’s chilly / damp. He is a 15 yr old yorkie and he now is on 25 mil of Carprofen. He does have arthritis. Is the shivering from being cold or from arthritis pain. He never use to shiver like that when he went out in cold. Ty

My dog has arthritis in his front wrists. I am giving him cbd oil and saving up to try and get him some shots in his joints. I just don’t know if he has arthritis in his back legs too.

My dog has been having issues with a limp for a couple weeks. But I've noticed that he struggles getting up after sleeping. He is a newfoundland puppy 5 month old. His behavior has not changed that I have noticed. I went to a vet and they said it was something with his knee and gave him inflammatory medicine for it. But he still has this limp and trouble getting up.

they didn't think it might have been hip dysplasia? I'm not a vet or anything, I just know that shows up sometimes when they are in those growing stages. I hope your poor guy get better, breaks my heart. I have an almost 11 year old black lab, who has been popping a little bit, so here I am at 3 am looking up arthritis in dogs lol

@@erinbrown9017 it's growing pains. He started limping on his front legs aswell so we took him back and they said it is pain from growing rapidly. They gave us pain med and anti inflammatory and hasn't been limping nearly as much and when he has its been less severe

my dog has just had emergency surgery for a womb infection about a week ago and all four paws are swollen from the ankle/wrist point down. you cant move the skin because its so tight and feels really hot

My 1 year old Anatolian has arthritis is both his back legs. Both his knee discs tore off and his patellas. He had operations done to both legs and his tendons and ligaments had to be replaced at 6 months old. Vet informed me the arthritis occurred due to the injuries. They believe he was inbred. He is so young. How can i make his life beter. He is on joint care and cannabis capsules once a day and takes metacam every morning since the 20th of August 2020.

I just woke up and checked on my 9 year old dog and he was laying in his bed not moving. His front legs look fine so I put the lead on him to take him out but when he got up he instantly started to make noises of pain so I let him back down. I really don’t know what to do.

I think my shih truck has it he is 1 year old he has lost all interest in toys and is crying in pain multiple times a day he also sits down every few feet and he keeps favoring both of his hind legs also when you try to touch his hind legs

My 15 year old boy (chi-doxie) is my hiking buddy. We do 4 mile walks every day, and this week we went on lots of hikes. Roughly 6 miles a day. Today, he couldnt make it up our patio stairs (only 3 steps) and just wants to lie around. I noticed little whines when he's moving around. I plan on drawing him a nice hot bath tonight. Can i add epsom salts to it? Ill be researching in case you dont reply. Can i also start him on CBD regimen?

if he does that exercise without problems normally then it's more likely to be something other than arthritis and I'd advise a tripto the vet to gat an accurate diagnosis

yes Laura, that can definitely be a sign of problems, especially if focused on a single joint. Licking the inside of the front leg can also be a sign of anxiety and stress

My dog becomes sensitive on her thigh part. A light touch becomes very painful on her. She cant jump on her favorite chair. She can walk, eat and drink a lot but when you touch her thighs she whimps. Maybe she is obese. Huhuhuhu she is a 5 yrs. Old lab and 36kls.

I’ve got an 8 year old German Shepherd who I love with all my heart. I’ve noticed when we go out in the car for a long walk she is fine jumping in the back when we leave but she can’t do it on the way back. I have to lift her in. Is this a sign of arthritis?

She has just recently started limping whilst going out on walks. She is fine around the house though. She can climb the stairs but when we go on a walk she will occasionally prevent putting weight on her rear left leg. What can I do to improve her quality of life

@@chickennwatermelons1 I have a German Shepherd mix and she was diagnosed with mild arthritis when she was 10. There was a little limping here and there but nothing major. This occurred mainly after walks. I had to adjust from longer walks to shorter walk, I also put her on supplements. She’s 12 and still walks relatively good. I take her on frequent, controlled short walks and, although she can, I don’t let her jump in and out of the car. I help her in and out of the car to prevent her joints from getting sore and achy. I also feed her a high quality, protein rich senior food. I noticed a huge difference for the better. The Dr. has another video on his channel giving tips on how to care for dogs with arthritis. I found it to be very helpful, you might as well. You’re definitely not alone! We don’t want our beloved friends to suffer!

Hello, my dog is 10 yrs old and for about 2 months now, he gets in this hunched back position, he can stay standing ALLL day crying. The vet is no help they just assume and give me pain killers. When i touch his back or his neck he cries really loud. Everyday when I wake up he is already hunched back and barley moving.. any idea what it could be?

My dog is a beagle, he is 8 months old and he shows pain in his back right leg. it's like I don't know how but whenever the pain come the stretch his leg and he is having difficulty in sitting or staying at one place I spotted this like an hour before, for now, these are the symptoms that he is showing and he is having pain inside I can see that.

No, she won't have arthritis but she could have other joint problems. These are more signs of pain so I would definitely get her checked over, even more so given how young she is

My partner has a miniature fox terrier, he is 16yrs old. I have noticed these symptoms but I also noticed the dog was incontinent in his bed, while panting and breathing heavily just by walking short distances, the dog is also overweight. I beleive the dog is nearing close to death ????

My dog Bigfoot has quit greeting me at the door when I get back home now he has been that way for a while now I usually speak to him and he will look at me and lay his head back down and I will go over and get some good sugars off him and sometimes he will go ahead and get up.

Take him to the vet if possible. My dog had similar symptoms and a few months later I had to put him to sleep. It could be his hips.

My boy rufus's 12 years old yesterday he just stopped moving his left back hind leg and had trouble getting up I took him to the vet immediately and the diagnosis was clear from there he's on anti-inflammatories and pain meds now

Yeah I think I may need a second opinion my dog can't walk shes paralyzed and the doctor said it's because she has arthritis

arthritis won't cause paralysis but when it is really advanced it can result in a dog not having the strength to get themselves up and walk around
