@@marwinjucker9864 To answer both of your questions I just speak to the microphone some sentences in Spanish. Then I just simply ask Chat GBT if my sentences are grammatically correct and then I continue the conversation so forth. Hope that helps!
The weakness training is fantastic. Thank you for the tips. I have been using ChatGPT for my Spanish but had not progressed to using it this way. Excellent video! Thank you.
she ate dinner is not really "elle a mangé le dinner" which is litteral I got it but we simply say "elle a dîné". But the rest when u introduce yourself etc is tremendous with this app; into bargain of that, the accent is there...wow.
I later asked it what is the best way to tell someone you ate dinner in french instead of just translating my english sentence and it use dîné the way you did as well, so I think just asking a ton of questions is the best way to really zero in on the right answer. For the accent, when you prompt in French, the accent is great. When you prompt in english for it to say something in French it has an english-ish accent and sounds odd.
I have the same problem with Spanish. I was trying to learn that way some time ago, but it speaks too fast. This version of GPT cannot control the voice, so it won't work until the new version is available to me.
Thanks, this was really useful. I had been using the browser version and didn’t know the free app had the voice option. I am also a French learner, and one thing I would suggest is not to do translations too much. At your level you can give the prompts in French and “converse” more naturally that way, and you learn to think in the target language rather than translating all the time.
Yeah I've been using it similarly too and you're so right it's really powerful. I loved the gpt-4o demo they did the other day with the more realistic, conversational, voice features, that's going to make things really great I think.
It might help with your past verb tenses if you think of the passé composé as a SNAPSHOT of the past (you can see the clear edges!), while the imparfait is a video or film. The difference is clearest when you pair the two in the same sentence and you can “see” the snapshot “crash” into the video. For example, you were crossing the street (see the video) when a car hit you (snapshot). The same thing is happening in English, but we don’t even think about it: Je regardais la télé quand mon chien m’a mordu la jambe - I was watching TV when my dog bit my leg il étudiait le français quand son ami a frappé à la porte - Hé was studying French when his friend knocked on the door. 👍
Ai is fantastic for speaking with it. I have been using it for a few months and I can say is really good. Only the downside is sometimes it doesn’t recognize the language and mix.from instance,I was talking in Portuguese and it responded me in Spanish 😂
I totally understand what you mean by that , besides AI makes a lot of mistakes and misunderstand some concepts however if you don’t have linguistic exchange partner it’s practical and really useful to play with it. Ask it to give a list of questions,to correct you and to maintain a good line of discussions. AI is a really good breakthrough to me Have a good day 🌸
"I walked" and "I was walking" are "past tense" and "past perfect tense". Past perfect is great for authors telling a story that happened a long time ago. Pretty standard stuff for writers to use--even without knowing the name of the grammatical context (because the names don't matter--I'm just a nerd). This is a super cool series of ideas. Thanks for putting this together for us!
These are insanely useful tips. Also, good job with your accent. It's quite good for someone at the late beginner/early intermediate stage of learning the language.
I asked ChatGPT to think of an animal and give me one hint at a time in Spanish until I guess it correctly. Super fun game that you can do with ANY topic.
I agree with you. The stres and timing are crucial to accelerate the language. And GPT voice mode is perfect. Only one dropbucks is that if you as for very simple sentences, you can quic get rid of of credits and mus wait some time to next tokens portion
It's a great tool to assist your language learning journey. As a native French speaker, the first two sentences you used as examples were somewhat off. The translations provided did not match was was being said.
Hi Braunventure That looks like a great tool you’re presenting today. But for the distinction between passé composé and imparfait I suggest you not use translation with isolated sentences, because a lot of times you can translate “he did” (for example) with either, depending on the context and on the nuance you want to express. It’s not a 1 to 1 translation. I think it’s a much better idea to work with a text in this case (and in general it works better too). Cheers!
Thanks for the tip. I have played around with having it give me an English paragraph where I only translate one sentence to do the translation with more context. Also translating with 2 verbs in the past to distinguish. I'll keep working on it 🤠
@@braunventures Sweet! Do you feel it's a little better this way? Another idea of something that could help even more with imparfait and passé composé is to read easy and short stories with these two tenses... and then try to observe and get a feeling about when you should use one or the other... but without establishing big theories about it and without necessarily translating each sentence. I think the distinction passé composé x imparfait is one of the distinctions that may require a lot of exposure and feedback on your own usage of tthem until you "master" it, so no need to rush ^^
Cannot we use Google translate or Apple translate and try to speak in french and check whether it understands your accent or language? I tried and understood that I need to improve accent for it to catch up 😅
This is great and I just tried it, but the message limit maxes out at 40 every 3 hours. My spanish pronunciation is #$%^ so I quickly run out of practice time using this method.
@@braunventures Unfortunately it doesn't. It's capped at 40 for now. And apparently version 4o is free now? I'm wondering why I'm paying over 20$ per month.
Actually, he did say that passé composé was „I walked“ and imparfait was „I was walking“. A nice general rule, but one that often doesn`t work (regrettably!). And passé composé can be simple past or present perfect in English. It all depends on context as noted above.
@@Mega-mo8en It‘s just not that simple - regrettably! Passé composé is generally used for a single completed action in the past, so simple past in English. Imparfait is used for something without a definite beginning and end, often the description of an action that was going on when something else happened, so the classic past continuous in English. It is also used for situations that English describes using „used to do something“ and for descriptions of situations in the past. Passé composé CAN be English present perfect, but there are common situations using present perfect in English that use the present tense in French. J‘habite à Paris depuis 2 ans = I have lived in Paris for 2 years. J‘ai habité à Paris pendant 2 ans = I lived in Paris for two years. J‘habitais à Paris quand France a gagné la Coupe du Monde = I was living in Paris when France won the Word Cup. J‘ai déjà déjeuné aujourd‘hui. = I have already had lunch today.
Hi I just wondered are you using a voice plug in for chat gpt I used some in Italian and they were terrible but that was about 6 months ago thanks Nick
the possible weakness of such training vs real teacher is a feedback in case of you are failing. What would model tell you in case you mistranslated or had a bad pronunciation and your speack was not recognised properly. It could be a frustrating thing trying to explain the model what and how you would like to be corrected.
I'm sure there's tons of improvement to be had in my prompting. I asked it to tell me things in French slang once so I think you can request less formal responses as well
With an AI pin and microphone, you're probably not going to need to speak the foreign language anyway! But, I'll still learn it because I enjoy it and it's easier to get to know someone
I don’t know about the new voice, but when I tried it with German with the current one, it sounded pretty German but with an American accent. It’s ok coz I at least know it’s not a native speaker, it would be good still for real time speaking practice
@@shamicentertainment1262 so I've found the accent changes depending on the language of the prompt. When I prompt in French it sounds way more French than when I prompt in English to give me a French sentence
You say in the comments that you demoed the free version in this video, but when I tried GPT-4o, downloaded to an Android phone about a month ago, there is only voice to text, and it only allowed me to do one message before prompting me to upgrade to the paid version. What's the secret to getting this free version?
Sorry, but I'm not sure why that would be. When you google it you can see they have released this feature in November 2023. Its the little headphone icon on the bottom right
Just listened to the second half of the video. Seems to me you get exactly the same from a French phrase book for tourists. In what way does this way of using ChatGPT make learning easier, faster, more efficient? What am I missing?
The American accent this thing's French has is atrocious, if you internalize this, you'll always sound like an American. And you probably won't even be able to pronounce some of the important nasalized vowels or sounds English doesn't have like "e" (similar to German "ö"). Before this is of any use, it needs to be able to do multi-language responses where its language configuration can change mid-sentence. Or you need to use the purely French version from the start, it uses the correct speech synthesis model.
Yeah the French it spoke sounded so American, at least phonetically. But I suppose that's because the guy asked ChatGPT in English, and the machine sort of kept using English phonetics even in other languages. Had the conversation been 100% in French from the start, it would probably have sounded perfectly French.
On the other hand it's really difficult to find a native speaker from the target country if you are not there (sometimes even if you are there). At least this way people in that country will laugh at you perhaps but at least you will get your point across isnt it?
@@stevencats7137 there's youtube, youglish and other places. There's movies and cartoons in different languages. There's language exchange apps like hellotalk
The accent and use of natural language aren’t great but more to the point, how much computing power and consequent carbon emissions do these apps generate?
