I giggle when those who'd mock us now look astonished how we were able to have and do as they wanted but they ended up in debt or worse. We're not rich at all , were just practical, frugal and appreciative. Now our kids are carrying these good habits! Blessings!

One of the best things about being frugal is that you get to save money--yup, put it right in the bank! When the rest of my siblings are "head over heals" in debt and wondering how they are ever gonna pay it down--I am out of debt with an 800 credit score and saving money every month. One of the best things I have ever done was get out of debt before I retired! YES!

I am almost 82 and of course retired! I live in a board and care home in Fresnoi, California! I also am pretty frugal! I love to sew and can make things that I need! I also love to crochet! These are things that keep me busy and I can do for myself and others! I have a private room and my own TV with Xfinity. So I have that entertainment! I also have my computer and wifi is also furnished! We have 2 different care givers. One for weekdays and the other for weekends! I kind of serve in that capacity nights, if I am needed! There are 8 of us in our home, 6 women and 2 men. Most of us are very good friends and we visit and that doesn't cost anything! Haha... I am often asked to teach our caregivers how to cook something or another! I love to help people, it pleases me to feel needed! I enjoyed your show, I am pretty new to using RU-vid, I have been on Facebook for about 5 years now. (Anothrer thing to keep me busy and entertained for free).

I drive a 2000 Camry with 421 k miles on her. I've owned the car since she was new and have always kept up with the maintenance. When I bought the car as a dumb kid in college I remember my father telling me did I better drive that fancy car at least 200k just to break even so out of spite I've doubled that and keep going. Best piece of advice he ever gave me was to say that oil is cheap but engines are expensive. Even though I work in the car industry and I'm surrounded by how much newer and much flash your cars I take great pride in the fact that I made a good choice when choosing which car I was going to be in debt for. Her paint is still shiny, the AC still blows ice cold, and the old fashioned teddy bear fur seat Fabrics are still holding up quite nicely. The ride is even more supple and comfortable considering the last car payment I ever made who's back over 15 years ago. 😂

Good video. 1-Buy cleaning/laundry supplies from Dollar Tree 2-Hang laundry to air dry, outside in good weather, inside on hangers in colder months 3-Hand wash dishes and air dry in rack 4-Borrow DVD's and CD's from library 5-Plan a flexible menu and eat at home 6- Write a detailed grocery list so you don't buy what you still have 7- Shop at ALDI 8-Eat 1 good meal a day, supplement w/ fruit, tea or coffee and a snack 9-Use credit cards to get the add'l discounts at stores. Buy used clothes,purses,jewelry. Pay in full each month 10-Have coffee out occasionally w/ a friend at McDonalds, all amounts 1 dollar.

Oops, #1 and #2 ... sometimes buying cleaning and laundry supplies from the dollar store are very watered-down. Yeah you would be better off buying these products at your Walmart, etcetera and water them down by yourself. Better yet! And I have not tried this yet, but another video said to use one teaspoon, yes one teaspoon of blue Dawn soap in a load of laundry. Now that is frugal! Hang laundry to air-dry, good idea bad idea. You would have to then iron your clothes, using up electricity. Most people do not realize that to dry clothes in the dryer, put the timer 20 minutes less and your clothes will come out dry. So there is 20 minutes of electricity that you are saving, and your clothes are practically wrinkle-free..
@misfithomemaker3683
@misfithomemaker3683 5 лет назад
I found out when my dryer broke that that thing was costing 200$ a month to run. I went 1 year without a dryer. I hung things on the rails the poarch in summer and everywhere in the rooms in winter. It works, but it's work finding places to hang them and putting them away. I need an old fashioned clothes line. We are in the country, it's possible I could have it. Dryers are convenient but so expensive and not really worth it. I hope I can get things straightened out and start saving money on that.
@iww6994
@iww6994 3 года назад
@@misfithomemaker3683 before hang to dry try to straighten it na leave it flat to ' rest'. If you hang after 1 hour it will have less wrinkles. This especially works with cotton eg. duvet covers, tshirts.

I love your practicality and obvious good nature. I've been frugal my whole life out of sheer necessity. It is something that, honestly, schools should teach. If you weren't raised or had to live this way, many of those things that come naturally to us thrifty folks are just alien ideas to you. I feel bad for people being raised fairly well off, honestly, because when money runs out or things get tough, they don't know what to do! And they FEEL impoverished, where people who do without to meet a goal or because they can't make themselves waste the money are typically perfectly content. I love that about your beautiful smile as you go through your tidy, functional home. You are HAPPY, even if you have things you'd LIKE to do or own. Most people can't find contentment and learn to love what they have and appreciate their belongings, lifestyle, etc. They always want more, more, more. I prefer the "bloom where you are planted" approach. BTW, love all of the 1970s/80s kitchen stuff. I go thrifting or yard sale shopping for older, more durable stuff like that mixer. I'm still using my Mom's old Texasware mixing bowls from the 1970s and my grandma's cheese graters from circa 1920s!

We don't eat meat every meal, I never throw food away because leftovers are a must, my car is 17 years old and it runs good because I take care of it, I have house clothes that might look like rags to some but I keep my better clothes for when I leave the house, I turn all lights off if I'm not in the room, I use a hand towel to dry instead of wasting paper towels, my clothes dryer is over 20 years old and doesn't match my washer but I don't care because it works fine. This is just some of the things I do to save.

I've had it all, lost it and when picking up pieces, it was an eye opening experience. I'm now grateful for a climate controlled place to live. In the past 5 years we’ve purchased and sold 5 different cars and have thrown money at things that were not necessity. Our son has too many toys which means a lot of them don’t get payed with and they’re taking up space. I learned that buying top quality products in the end save money because they never fall apart and don't need to be replaced.

During college, it was really a struggle BUT I learnt the hard way and I am thankful I did. I learnt not to waste food, don't go out too much for dinner, shop carefully, wash once a week, don't impulse buy, shop for thrift clothes; Iv'e learnt to buy things that last forever, borrow books from the library. Now 20 years later, I still follow the principals of budgeting and living frugally, live within my means, even though I have a good job and an excellent wage.

That's great that you take care of your things. So many people don't. They treat things like they are disposable. We used to hear that our youngest daughter "had SOOOO many toys." They were her older sisters birthday and holiday gifts that were handed down to her. They were 10 and 6 years older. So she did have a lot. But it was because her sisters took care of all their books and toys. So the baby of the bunch got to enjoy them!

found your channel thanks to Coffee with Kate! Love it so far. Thank you for great content. We too believe in debt free living. We drive vehicles that are 15+ years old. Fortunately my husband is an amazing mechanic but we're blown away by how many people think when a car gets to a certain age they have to get a new one "just in case something breaks". I've explained to friends that if they were to put that car payment amount into savings they would easily have enough each year saved up to replace whole engines and transmissions, the highest costing repairs. We cannot allow fear to drive our spending.

Absolutely on spot! I have a lower "credit score" because.... drumroll please... I don't have any revolving credit, my things are paid for and I don't borrow money all of the time! Now, in my day, when a person had no debt, paid day to day bills on time, and owned outright their car, home, etc. (Well, we are still paying for the home... :-( ) that person was considered well off. Today, you have to be in debt up to your butt to be considered worthy of credit and to maintain a high credit rating with these stupid agencies... It makes me sick.

AlbredaWelde ...So true, I have one credit card that I pay off every month, I have no other debt. I am notified every 3 mos that my credit score has gone down! You need debt and a monthly payment history to maintain a good credit score. I think this is backward but I don’t care if mine gets to 0, that means I have saved $ to purchase what I need with cash!

My laundry detergent for the last few years cost me about $1.50 a year to make with an average of three or four loads a laundry a week. Sometimes buying a new appliance like a refrigerator will save you lots of money on your electric bill. They make them much more energy efficient now. Keep up the good work getting the word out. Being frugal is something in my opinion has to be a learned skill and it's a continual lifelong process since we're bombarded with tons of choices/decisions each day. I'm learning! :) Don't have the frugal mind-set down pat. Consistency and self-discipline is key. If I only had a quarter for each un-frugal thing I've done in the past, we'd be rich :) On a different note - how about a curtain (from fabric or shower curtain cut up) and a tension rod or hook & eyes to cover your ac unit? (instead of a door). It would be cheaper and prettier. :)

I mourn the demise of both stores. I also keep a budget, half of my income to bills and food, the other half for replace and repair of everything in our house and cars. Save a little each payperiod, and by the time you need something you will always have the money.

I agree with you that the older I get the less money that I feel the need to spend. My microwave is big and ugly and. I bought it in 1993. I will not replace it until it blows up. My 19 year old washing machine blew up a year ago and I bought an energy efficient machine and it has cut my water usage down dramatically. A teenager young lad who served me in the supermarket yesterday was so proud to show me his new iPhone that he had just bought for $1900 Aussie dollars! I almost had a heart. I told him to keep working hard to pay that off! I could not believe that his parents would allow it. What a waste of money.

Nice tips there! Planning your meals means that you won't go nutty when shopping for groceries, thus saving. Stopped buying new books like mad years ago; only if it's something that I will treasure. I'll be weeding through soon and letting some go. Something you didn't mention. I've always been one who buys used furniture. Over the years I've amassed a beautiful and eclectic mid-century modern collection including sofas, dining table and chairs, dressers, living room chairs, nightstands, buffet, etc. High quality pieces for far less than something brand new and cheaply "banged out." I don't mind a scratch or two; it shows that the piece has "lived."

Another great video. Thank you for letting us into your home. I love your "vintage" kitchen equipment. Don't get rid of it! New never works as good!! I am very frugal when it comes to food. I have 4 boys and my youngest 2 have never been to a sit down restaurant. Only fast food a handful of times. I cook everything from scratch and have a HUGE garden. I just recently got a job as a virtual assistant for a large frugal living RU-vid channel and we save 100% of my income. Our house will be paid off in a year. I also drive a very old minivan with over 200,000 miles. I would never get rid of it. I have never had a more reliable car! I don't decorate my house. I have a very nice, large home but I do not care about decoration. As long as it is clean and tidy I am happy. My #1 piece of advice is to be content at home. So many people have to run here, there, and everywhere all the time. They are not content in their home. I have also taught my kids to be content at home. We have an above ground pool, trampoline, bikes, scooters, etc and we have other kids here all the time but we have our fun at home. I leave my house only 1-2 times a week to garage sale for everything we need. I mean everything! Last year we lived off only $19,000 and everything else went to our mortgage. I do not feel we lived deprived. We even went on a nice vacation. Sorry so long winded. Love your channel. So happy to have found you. Blessings! Heidi

I am wearing clothes I bought over twenty years ago, when I was working. Over the years, we saved our cards to each other, and re-use them now. I write the date on the back when they were given. For very cheap you could hang up a curtain over your AC door unit is my first thought bought at the thrift store of course. My frugalness? I do a huge amount its always a work in progress learn new things all the time, just learned today from Homestead Tessie how to make cheap fabric softener sheets for the dryer 30 to 40 loads $1.33. I do canning in a major way when I can get free or very cheap produce I can it. I learned to can meat this year. Having a well stocked pantry gives you choices on meal planning without having to run out and buy something or worst being tempted by fast food because you are too tired to cook. I canned last week 10 quarts of vegetable soup we had it for dinner Saturday after working in our master bedroom spackling and painting for 10 hours. We were out of butter and had wanted grilled cheese sandwiches as a side, husband said "how about we use burritto shells with melted cheese on them instead"? I retired last year and this year we got rid of our second car.. we car share now. When I am out running errands I map out where I am going so that I am not wasting gas and time running all over the place so that saves gas and wear and tear on our car. I look forward to learning tips from you and sharing what I have learned. Anna In Ohio.

For pet owners, specifically indoor cat owners. I use Kiln Dried Equine Pellet Bedding. For a 40lb bag it costs about $7.00 in myvarea for the bag lasts me about 6-8 months. You have to have 2 nesting containers. There must be space between them. You drill holes in the top box bottom about 1/4" holes spaced about 1" apart. Fill the top box with the pellets and set that box over the bottom box. When the kitty pees the wet pellets dissolve into sawdust. The poop just sets there. I scoop the poop out and flush it...my kitty's box is in my bathroom. Then I stir the "litter" and the sawdust falls through the holes into the bottom box. The bonus is no smell. Well almost, every once in a while my kitty dumps a stink bomb but no problem just scoop and flush. There are several how to RU-vid videos to show how to make the "litter" box.

That hand mixer should be a collectible at this point lol. It's not about having the best and newest things but rather enjoying what you have and making the most out of it. Thanks for sharing Money Mom. I am going to share our cheap and frugal living as well.

I love your videos! My husband saw a range that was on sale and suggested we buy it. But I said ours still works even though it's not the most attractive! I'm learning the frugal lifestyle. :)

I only buy things if I need them, or really need them, not because I want them. And I don’t throw things away. I try to donate them to charity stores, friends or freecycle wherever possible. I also pick a lot of stuff up from freecycle. Thanks for posting your frugal life.

I am frugal regarding doing things myself instead of paying someone. When I was younger, I spent a small fortune on dog grooming. Although that pampered pup has long since passed, my husband and I adopted a beautiful lab-chow mix shelter dog. I bathe and groom him myself, do the whisking to keep the fur from flying and brush him. I find this to be a blissful bonding and comforting time between my dog and me. He loves the careful attention and we save money. He actually has his own Facebook page with over 3,000 followers. What a star! Manning his page is a free and fun thing for me. We partnered with a dog food company to get free dog food, which we donate every ounce of to shelters and rescues.

Hubby and I went to the Dollar Store today for Mother’s Day. Then he went through the Starbucks drive through. We are very different when it comes to money. 😊😊 And yes, I’m in charge of the money. He gets some cash every Friday to spend on his frivolities. LOL Tip: I read that the dishwasher uses less water than hand washing, so no need to feel guilty about using it.

Less water yes, but there's the electricity, soap, and noise to consider

I am a dishwasher fan. I do not even really buy things that are not dishwasher safe - sans pots and pans. It keeps the kitchen clean and keeps the family at peace. Its ok to use help to keep your space clean and chaotic free, especially because frugal people spend a lot of time at home.

I found this video very interesting an honest. Thank you for sharing this. Would you consider sharing your weekly menu? Just sharing the one you have on this refrigerator would be really interesting to me. I totally agree with you that the older I get, the more frugal I get. In my case, this might be because when the kids were young, everything was justified as necessary for the kids. Now that we are empty nesters, I feel more in control of all financial matters. Never was a big debt/spender, but it’s all easier now.

Diana, I guess I'm the exception, then. I am not a spend thrift, but I started life with not much and I still have most of it! I've been thrifty/frugal (or what I prefer to call SENSIBLE) my entire life. This is not to say that I've never had a moment of weakness, but as I remind my husband periodically when someone makes a comment about the way that I keep house, shop, or use things, "If I wasn't so cheap, we wouldn't have half of what we do today." The one thing that is killing me is staying in our big old home that we raised the kids in because we need to be close to his job. I can't wait to downsize to a smaller, cheaper to heat and maintain home!

Lucy is an icon. I really like watching the rerun shows and have collected a small group of Lucy & Friends items at thrift stores ( our favorite kind of stores) I have saved quite a bit of money on craft items. I used to work at a craft store; but I still liked getting good supplies at the thrift stores) If a customer couldn't afford new stuff, I would give them a list of thrift stores to find items that they wanted but couldn't afford them at our store. They were appreciative for the help.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! That’s how we live. And we wash laundry by hand and hang dry. I use my dishwasher on “off peak” hours. I make my own laundry detergent and softener. I don’t have to as I Extreme coupon and have over 30 bottles of each stashed in my closets. I just love being resourceful! In June I’m making elderberry syrup.
