Went to Chiang Mai for what was meant to a one month trip and ended up staying 10 years. Great place! Going to buy a condo there this year. I remember going to Nimmen for the first time in 2003 and there were still bamboo-walled, open-style, cafes, and there was one Wa Wee Coffee (the only place with real coffee) which used to have three or four farangs and a couple of Thais at a time. The reason that coffee really took off in CM was because the Queen Mother, Princess Srinagarindra, at 88 years old made it her mission to have the farmers of Doi Tung particularly replace opium crops with coffee crops. Wasn't hard to convince them as they made a LOT more with coffee. From the early 90s to the early 00s, more and more coffee was grown, eventually completely pushing opium out. PM Thaksin's push against drugs in 2003 (approx. 2800 (supposed) drug dealers summarily executed by gunshot by police during October 2003) had an effect too as did the capture of Khun San (the Burmese drug lord). Now, outside of Melbourne, CM is consider one the best place for serious coffee drinkers on Earth. Enjoy that coffee.
@@ThatOneGuy-hp2pb Oh yeah, back then there were very few Western couples vlogging in Thailand. I mean OG RU-vidrs, obviously not the first Westerners EVER, lmao.
My wife and I spent 6 months in SE Asia in 2017 and went back for our honeymoon earlier this year. We shared your feelings of discovering old favourites, and the occasional slight melancholy of new developments clashing with our old memories. You guys would of been a fun couple to run into on one of our trips! Great energy from you two. Subscribed for more. All the best -Chaz and Alexa in Canada
We were in Chiang Mai in 2016 . The prices have changed. It has a special place in our hearts in that we celebrated a Wedding Anniversary of which you will one day. Great Memories. As always, a wonderful video. We haven't missed any. Love you Dearly !❤❤❤ Jim, Harriet and Yuki P.S. We want to send you a wedding gift. How can we do that ?
A lot seems to have changed in the past few years alone, let alone since 2016! You'd probably be shocked to see it with your own eyes now - gotta take the change though I suppose, just like Stace said. Oh we appreciate the sentiment but we couldn't possibly accept a wedding gift, thank you though!
Amazing city, just love it! I personally had a totally different image of this city once I started speaking Thai. It allowed me to connect to the wonderful Thai people and their amazing culture. 🙏

@@markseymour8365 global averages have calculated about 1500 hours to basic fluency in the THAI language. So you could learn it in a year if you spent 5 hours a day Every day in language submersion. But most do a couple of hours a week ,that's 15 years according to statistics.NOT my opinion , but a fact , unless you discredit the global averages, some.people will 🙃 . I am fluent and can read and right Thai ,so I have a decent take on these statistics. Remember not all humans are born equal and some will not be able to learn fluency in Thai in their entire lifetime ,others will learn quicker . I know personally only Two Westerners that are fluent in Thai after living here for 15 year's.. that's how easy it is.. maybe your a quick learner with a specific language gene 😶 Stuart Jay Raj said he reads a dictionary and remembes 100s of words a day... I can't 😂 fluency in a second language is amazing .. good luck🙏
Squeeze lime into Pad Thai, put bean sprout in, and sprinkle dried red chili a little bit or more to enhance spiciness favor. Eat Pad Thai with fork and spoon and occasionally pick green veggie and chew it. When Pad Thai was promoted by Prime Minister Field Marshall Pibulsongkram during WWII as a national dish, it was supposed to be cheap but delicious. Nowadays the price can be dirt cheap about US$1 on the street up to $10 in 5-star hotel. You can buy one at the price of $1 (35 baht) freshly cooked on local market but with no prawn as prawn is expensive. Pad Thai with 2 prawns can be had on the street at the price around 60-100 baht ($2-$3).
This popped up in my newsfeed- I’ve been to that area of Thailand about 3yrs ago & strongly considering RELOCATING & Retiring there!! Right NOW!! ASAP!! Gotta get out of America- it’s a nightmare here- so all the info you provided was super informative & a guide to move on & relocate!! Thanks- I’m subscribed for more!!
My boyfriend and I have been living in Chiang Mai since last year and will be here till November. Before we came here, I watched this video and I remember I had a different perspective to now, having never been to Chiang Mai before. Watching it now, seeing you walk down the street we live on and around Nimman, is such a strange feeling! The fact that you were visiting, after having lived here years ago, kind of made me a bit emotional 😅 and just extra appreciative to be here now! Because one day we will also come back and look at it as the city we ‘used’ to live in 🥹 The time is going so fast!
That was such a cool comment and really relatable too! We did the same thing watching videos before we moved there, arriving it felt so foreign and unrecognisable, after a month it felt like home and every time we go back now is a flood of emotions
Hi guys. Charlie from Boston, USA here. Watching videos from my apartment in Mexico. My lease is up next week and I’m going back for a doctors appointment in Boston. I will stay for one month . I do like Mexico, but I keep hearing about Chiang Mai and I’ve been considering it . Seems good a place as any to start Thailand
Sorry for the delay, we've been exploring South America! CM is a great spot, very walkable. Though we did really like our time in Playa Del Carmen as well, similar to CM that you can live local in places, but have access to the tourism... unlike the feeling in Tulum and Cancun from our experience.
Love Chiang Mai, I have always stayed in the Old City, it has such a wonderful atmosphere. The Sunday night markets are amazing too. Last time I was there (pre pandemic) was this time of year - just in time for Songkran - great experience that one
I first DNd it in Chiang Mai 2013. Very few people working remotely then. Nimman was not built up at all and the only reason we even went there was for Ristr8to since it was the only cool thing on that road. It’s a different world now. Hope it stays awesome for years to come.
So happy to see you guys back in Thailand. I hope I can meet you both in person someday. I can still remember watching your old Thailand videos. They inspired me to travel more.
Singha beer in brown bottle was introduced/produced into Thailand about 100 years ago using German recipe by King Rama VI court official Pirompakdi family ancestor. It was highly appreciated by both Thai and expat drinkers. Even though other local brand was introduced one after another but could not shake Singha's dominance and died away until Thai Beverages, the largest and most dominant liquor producer (mostly rum and white spirit) in Thailand, decided to partner with Carlberg to produce the Carlberg brand locally to compete with Singha. It also resulted in a failure to challenge Singha. Both sides gradually drifted apart and Carlberg was eventually no longer produced locally. Before the final breakup, Thai Beverages introduced Chang (Elephant) beer in green bottle, which was much cheaper to gain market share from Singha. It was successful in a few years after heavy promotion and discounted price, and became No.1 seller. This was the reason that Carlberg decided to quit the Thai market as it seemed its Thai partner did not care to promote Carlberg anymore after Chang beer was successfully introduced. Singha did not give in and introduced Leo in brown bottle at the same price of Chang and it instantly became a success as well. Now, Chang and Leo are neck and neck, dominating local Thai beer market. Owners of Chang/rum/white spirit and Singha/Leo are Thai billionaires. Note: Alcohol sale is banned on religious holidays and the evening prior to general election day and the election day itself. On a regular day, alcohol sale is available from 11.00-14.00 and 17.00-24.00 at 7-11 and mini/super stores, Lotus or Big C. However, this is Thailand and you can always buy your favorite beer/liquor at your small convenient store in your village at all hours (if the store opens). Some shops stay open until 2 am on Friday and Saturday in some villages. Don't know why the police ignore those small shops selling alcohol at all hours. BTW, Chang/Leo in 350 ml can costs 35-36 baht at neighboring village store but 39 baht at 7-11.
Chang and Leo are both quite disgusting in my opinion, especially Chang which upset my stomach every time I drank it. They are both aimed at the poorer end of the Thai market so it always looks quite odd to me when I see Westerners drinking it. And at 6.4% when introduced, Chang was aimed squarely at the alcoholics, much like Tenants Super in the UK. I did used to like the taste of Singha but when they reduced the A.B.V. from 6% to 5%, they spoiled it (again IMO). The best lager in Thailand today is, as it has been since I first moved here, Beer Laos (Dark). EDIT: And if you live here, you ought to know exactly why the police ignore some law breakers and not others.
This is 1st comment…. You guys are really good, very relaxed. Chaing Mai is my favourite wanna go to city… your video just makes it so much more appealing… My partner and I are ex kiwis living in Perth for many years… you guys have an idyllic lifestyle…. good on you

Many thanks for featuring my favourite Roastniyom cafe ! Always look forward to going there when back in Chiangmai. One thing that's changed in the past few years...there are now pedestrian crossing traffic lights at the Maya Mall intersection. Like you, I am a fan of the basement food court in the Maya and the Rimping supermarket next to it. And for the manga fans there's a special bookshop with a pretty extensive stock on one side of the food court.
Had you seen Rostinyom since it became an 'exclusive' place? The rebrand and reno work looks amazing, but kind of missing that dodgy tree in the middle of the cafe though haha
@@DanegerAndStacey Yes, I went there last year. I agree that the tree through the middle was a fun feature. However, there's actually more room inside now and tbh the coffee and variety of cakes are as good as ever...so in a way it's always been exclusive for me 😀
Perfect timing! I was supposed to go in 2019 - but got diagnosed with a chronic illness and then covid hit. I've been wondering what's changed and if it was still an option. Because I'm ready to get back to traveling again. So many of the travel vids are from years ago. I'm SO glad you guys are back and made an updated video.
Hi guys . Jenny and Dave here from Wellington NZ . We are at Sabai Sabai in Chiang Mai ( so lovely) and tomorrow off to the elephant sanctuary. Thanks for your sharing and inspiration 🤗 Will check out your favourite cafe too 👍 SO pretty and quiet here after Bangkok ( overwhelming) Look forward to your next adventures as we think of you here 💖
I’ve just found your channel and I’ve got a feeling I’m going to like it! Love the way you present and the information you provide and little price comparisons you give at the bottom of the screen. Great video!
ah.. so much difference.. first time i was there for 3 months back in 2005.. then went back in 2018. having no mobile internet, no vloggers, no google maps, no dating app, no online booking makes a huge difference. 😂😂😂
Thanks for the movie we love Chiang Mai we're back in February for the Sunday night Market 😊 and we're going to hunt down the chicken place it looked lush 😋
Hey guys it's funny...today I plan to have holiday in Chiang Mai and your video was the first suggestion. Why is it funny? 6 years ago I decided to move to Vietnam and your video was one of the first suggestion. After 6 year I still live in Hoi An, still going to the same gym that you recommended. I will definitely trust your judgment about Chiang Mai
Haha that's actually pretty crazy huh. How is it living in Hoi An these days? Did they ever get a bigger/better supermarket or still need to venture to Danang?
I'm so glad for you the chicken was exactly as delicious as you remembered! Always a concern returning somewhere that you remember fondly. Also, killer haircut Dane!
Great video. So funny you did or have been doing like exactly the same things as I did during my time. Lived in palm springs, loved chicken josh, cloud 9 massage, roastniyom for coffee only thing i missed was ticky cafe!
I lived in the same area for 2 months last year....favorite coffee shop of mine also, had a soy latte most mornings befor getting some food from the street vendor next door or going to the same BBQ chicken place for the very best chicken ive eaten. One day after too much beer the night befor I walked down to get a chicken to take back to the condo and suffer in silence but I was devastated to find it closed .... for no reason, just closed. Worst day ever didnt know what to do. There was alos a coconut ice cream shop in the same area...fabulous. And a burger place ...sooo cheap and really good chips. And a bar owned by two ladyboys up near ninman rd who had a special of buy 1 get 1 free jugs of beer. I couldnt drink 4 jugs only 3 so they let me carryover the free one until the next day. Wonderful city wonderful friendly people and I cannot wait until I return in a few months. Oh and the hotel you showed in the beginning, the green hotel next to it is even nicer and more colonial. Thanks for the memories.
Nice video, but please don't negotiate with Song Taew drivers. The price is 30B. Just ask if they are going to your destination and get in. Otherwise, they'll think you are new and might overcharge you. It's acceptable to charge more if you're going a long distance or it's late at night, and in this case, they'll tell you.
VERY good point. When we lived there we knew the price (it was 20 at one stage) and never negotiated on standard trips - this is what happens when you're out of the loop and come across as an obvious tourist even when we're trying to do the right thing.
Glad you enjoyed! We mix it up around the world - Thailand is more of a hotel country but we always compare options anyway. Sabai Sabai is in a great location to walk to some of our favs.
Chiangmai is one of our favorite places. We spent 1 month there in 2014. Always planned to return but because the world got crazy we haven’t traveled all that much lately. Seems prices have increased quite a bit but that’s everywhere it seems.
I’ll watch it later but I was surprised to see Japanese snack bars in Nimman. But when I talked to the mamasan she told me wanted Chinese businessmen. I’ve stayed at sabai Sabai before. Nice place. Weed was everywhere in 2018 but now it’s legal. The bar that used to specialize in it 2017-19 is now out of business.
Thank you for the tour.💖. Looks like CM is a very interesting city. And the food... guys, woow. 🤤We looove your vlogs. You both are such a beautiful energy💕💕💕
1:40 JESUS!! At 45US and in a high season you got this beautiful huge room!!!!! I just saw Philippines Elnido video. At 60US you get just a standard hotel room!!
Hi guys, great video! My husband and I will be travelling to Thailand in February, returning to Canada from Chiang Mai March 8th. We’re a little worried that we’ll be there during the smoky season. When were you in Chiang Mai?
Unfortunately it's always pretty smokey in CM these days - the air quality isn't improving at all! You can try work around the dedicated burning seasons but we're not so sure thats a confirmed thing anymore
@@DanegerAndStacey My husband changed our flights. We’re arriving and departing from Bangkok now. Just means we’ll have to go back. We’re going to Koh Samui. Can you suggest another island to visit? We arrived in Phuket last time in Thailand. Stayed in Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Ao Nang, visited Railay, Maya Bay and Stayed in Bangkok.
I think I am going to have some rotisserie chicken and sticky rice for lunch today. You guys have given me the craving! And this is not the first time you have done this to me! Yum! 😋
I'm also returning to Chiang Mai. interesting to hear about how things where before. My first time in thailand last year I stayed at palm springs 9 months of traveling I came to Chiang Mai because its the most peaceful place and I needed to find myself
I spent some time in Chiang Mai in June - first time in 25 years. Reminded me I shouldn’t go back to places I’ve loved. I was so disappointed to see beautiful old Tarpae Rd is now pretty derelict - the old antique shops, the silver and porcelain shops and the old textile shops have gone, and a lot of the old teak houses are fighting for survival against glass chrome and cement rivals. The old city too has lost alot of its charm with the loss of many teak houses and their gardens. Most of the old family run guest houses have gone apparently as a result of deliberate policy to eliminate competition for the hotel chains. A reminder that time changes all things.
See this is kind of what we experienced in a way, Stace talked to it a little about how strange it is to see somewhere through different lens like that after so long. Sorry it changed from the way you recall, hopefully you can see the good if/when you go back again
Looking forward to more content from Chiang Mai. I did not see the name or location of the chicken place. I want to go there. I did find Cloud 9 Massage that I saw in the video on Google Maps. Is the chicken place near there? 🍗
Hello, you had so much saw from Thailand. What do you think from Pattaya. We think we will go to retire to Jomtien Beach in a condo, if I finish work. Best wishes Siri and Uwe
Does the amazing lunch chicken lunch place have a name or location? Would love to check it out when are there! Please share some info more in depth about the chicken spot! Great vided and full of fun things! Thanks for all the love
We spent all of last December, into January, there. Nice to see some familiar spots. We stayed next to the Shangri-La. Completely opposite of where you were (are). Best mall was the Central mall. Hope you got to that mall to see that basement food section. It was spectacular.
We picked up the 8-18 to show a bit more rather than just our faces 😂 Love the wide, hate the no stabilisation, miss having zoom. Can’t win em all with micro 4/3rds huh
@@DanegerAndStacey nice, it's a good look. I've got an Olympus with the in-body stabilizer but it probably gives up a lot on video vs what yours can do.
7:13 wow it was so cheap. What a great idea. So many people work from home now too so you don't even have to be a digital nomad! Bet it's gone up a bit since then though.

I’d go up and we’d swing a hammer once a month. In the end he took it over and rents it out to hikers(easy process also) I’m thinking of doing it again.
Probably to late, but 6 years for me. Need to get back. Nimman and old city are nice. But much most of these vds. miss so much of real C.M. Walk around south of the moat and other Thai areas. Other vds. Like "Walk About Wayne" can show you. Thanks.
Everything seems so cheap but everyone keeps saying how much higher it is right now but is it really? Every single city/country has gotten more expensive
